The motorhome is parked at Mary’s home in Murphys, California. I am scheduled to depart November 27th. While here, I’ll be doing cleaning, routine maintenance and minor repairs to both vehicles.

 

 

Since my RVing life is changing (see above), I’m starting to re-visit previously visited places. So rather than constantly re-blogging past entries, I’ve decided to do something different.

 

 

In 2011-2013, Mary and I did a 682 day, 12,679 miles in the motorhome and 8,000 miles in the Bronco, circumnavigation of the United States, which I called The Great Adventure. I called it so because other than my oldest granddaughter’s high school graduation in June in Connecticut, I didn’t know where we would be going or when we would be there!

 

 

So, unless I do something really different and unusual warranting a new blog entry, I’ll be posting entries from that trip.

Since my RVing life is changing (see above), I’m starting to re-visit previously visited places. So rather than constantly re-blogging past entries, I’ve decided to do something different.

The motorhome is still parked here at Heron Lake State Park about 20 miles south of Chama, New Mexico while I am recovering from my May 27th accident.

 

 

My right ribcage area remains slightly swollen and tender to the touch. I’m pleased to report some progress…with the exceptions of a cough or a sneeze, the poppings, with the associated pains, in my chest have finally stopped! I remain taking Ibuprofen, icing my ribcage area 2-3 times a day and wearing an elastic bandage abound my chest. The doctors told me to expect 6-12 weeks for recovery. The accident occurred six weeks and five days ago. Can you tell I’m ready for the recovery to be finished?

 

 

The locals tell me July through September is monsoon season here in New Mexico. June was hot and dry. About a week ago we started getting rain sporadically, but certainly nothing I’d call a monsoon. Typically it will start to cloud up in the mid-afternoon…

Rather quickly dark ominous clouds appear and then the rain  starts to fall, usually in large heavy raindrops. Still nothing I’d call a monsoon. That all changed last night at about 7:30 PM, when we had a real gully-washer! It rained HARD for about 1.5 hours, the wind rocked the motorhome and there where a number of nearby lightning strikes…

 

 

While not the worst thunder and lightning storm I’ve ever experienced (that was back in Pennsylvania in the mid-1970’s when I thought the World was ending!), it still was impressive!

 

 

This area really needs the rain as everything is tinder-dry. The rain here usually means lower temperatures, yeah!, and the air has a nice and clean smell and taste. So long as the storms do not pelt the motorhome with baseball-sized hail…let it rain!

As a holder of the New Mexico Annual Camping Permit (non-resident $225), I can stay up to three weeks in a park which I am currently doing here at Heron Lake.

 

I still need more rest and recuperation from my May 27th accident. My right ribcage area remains slightly swollen and tender to the touch. I’m still experiencing the occasional popping in my chest with the associated mild burning pain. I remain taking Ibuprofen, icing my ribcage area 2-3 times a day and wearing an elastic bandage abound my chest. The doctors told me to expect 6-12 weeks for recovery. The accident occurred six weeks ago today.

 

 

I’ve been here about 2.5 weeks and have pretty much visited all areas of Heron Lake for photography purposes. So I moved over to adjacent El Vado Lake. Here’s a Google image the show the relative locations. The pin shows my campsite location at Heron Lake. El Vado Lake is to the lower left. Right off of New Mexico Route 95 at the north (top) end of the lake there is a dirt road to what is called the North Ramp Boat Launch. The name no longer currently applies. Because of New Mexico’s several year-long drought…the lake level is way down and boats have not launched from here for some time. Take a look!

Between 1933 and 1935, as a work relief project of the Great Depression and to provide irrigation and flood control, the Middle Rio Grande Conservancy District with the cooperation of the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation built El Vado Dam which created the lake.

 

 

In several of the photos you can see ridges. I’m wondering if they are like rings in a tree…where each ridge is a year of drought as the lake has gone through its lowering process? I’m also wondering if this is an effect of global warming that we hear so much about. Seems like a likely explanation.

As a holder of the New Mexico Annual Camping Permit (non-resident $225), I can stay up to three weeks in a park. If desired, electricity can be had for $4 a day. There are 38 parks in the system.

 

 

I still need more rest and recuperation from my May 27th accident. My right ribcage area remains slightly swollen and tender to the touch. I’m still experiencing the occasional popping in my chest with the associated mild burning pain. I remain taking Ibuprofen, icing my ribcage area 2-3 times a day and wearing an elastic bandage abound my chest.

 

 

The locals tell me this is an unseasonably hot summer. So much so, if I have outside things to do I need to get them done by 10:00 AM, after which time I retreat to the comfort of the air conditioning of the motorhome. My part-time travel companion Mary calls me the Weather Wimp, because I get uncomfortable when temperatures get over 75 degrees. I’ve decided to stay here until July 10th.

 

 

Yesterday I took about a eight-mile ride in the Bronco to an area of the park known as Rincon…a primitive camping area on the west-end of the lake.

* The forecasted temperatures are in the mid-80’s. If I were to leave, it probably would mean moving to a lower elevation which likely means higher temperatures.

The motorhome is parked at Thousand Trails Thunderbird RV Resort at Monroe, Washington. I’ll depart here September 6th.

 

Since my RVing life is changing (see above), I’m starting to re-visit previously visited places. So rather than constantly re-blogging past entries, I’ve decided to do something different.

 

 

In 2011-2013, Mary and I did a 682 day, 12,679 miles in the motorhome and 8,000 miles in the Bronco, circumnavigation of the United States, which I called The Great Adventure. I called it so because other than my oldest granddaughter’s high school graduation in June in Connecticut, I didn’t know where we would be going or when we would be there!</div?

 

 

So, unless I do something really different and unusual warranting a new blog entry, I’ll be posting entries from that trip.

As a holder of the New Mexico Annual Camping Permit (non-resident $225), I can stay up to three weeks in a park. If desired, electricity can be had for $4 a day. It’s a perfect place for me to be while I rest and recuperate from the May 27th accident. There are 38 parks in the system.

 

 

The locals tell me this is an unseasonably hot summer. So much so, if I have outside things to do I need to get them done by 10:00 AM, after which time I retreat to the comfort of the air conditioning of the motorhome. Late yesterday afternoon we had some rain which cooled things off a bit, so I took a leisurely stroll along the Willow Creek Trail here in the campground.
