RVing Theory Of Relativity… (GA91)

Mary is no longer available for RV traveling, but we remain good friends.
Because we have 4,000+ postings, I’ve invited her to continue posting entries on this blog.
I’m currently in my 22nd year of full-time RVing and my lifestyle is changing, For more info click Here

The motorhome is parked at VFW Post #9745 in Winston, Oregon. I’ll depart here later this morning.

Since my RVing life is changing (see above), I’m starting to re-visit previously visited places. So rather than constantly re-blogging past entries, I’ve decided to do something different.

In 2011-2013, Mary and I did a 682 day, 12,679 miles in the motorhome and 8,000 miles in the Bronco, circumnavigation of the United States, which I called The Great Adventure. I called it so because other than my oldest granddaughter’s high school graduation in June in Connecticut, I didn’t know where we would be going or when we would be there!

So, unless I do something really different and unusual warranting a new blog entry, I’ll be posting entries from that trip.

This entry was posted April 25, 2012…

In the last two Blog entries I’ve discussed the process associated with finding a good parking place in a new-to-you large city area. Three days ago I arrived in Albuquerque, New Mexico…a large city approaching 900,000 which I’ve not visited before.

Therefore, in a parking place,  I was looking for the following items…all relative to each other…

* a location relatively convenient to the only garage that could work on my ABS which stayed lit,

* a location relatively convenient to the airport where I’ll soon meet Mary,

* a location relatively level,

* a location relatively safe,

* a location relatively quiet,

* a location relatively clean.

With these several factors there’s always some give-and-take relative to each other.

I finally ended up at VFW Post #401 which is located in an industrial business park which has locked security gates from 8:00 PM to 7:00 AM. It provides a nice feeling of security in the very large city…

As always you may left click upon an image to see an enlarged view and then click once again to see an even larger view…

However in yesterday’s Blog entry I indicated that all was not Ideal…
http://wp.me/pDCku-4im

Those relatively minor items were cured when I discovered an electrical outlet on the end of the building. I negotiated a fair fee for this electrical connection which cured the following items…

* I now have use of my motorhome air-conditioner to provide relief from the near-record high temperatures currently being experienced here,

* While the air conditioner is running it blocks all exterior city noises.

The noisy “musicians” I complained about did not “practice” last night…maybe the 87 degrees yesterday had some thing to do with that. This next photo is from the dinette window and looks at the storage area where they were practicing…

In this location, I’m only (the way the crow flies…presumably in a straight line)…

* 0.71 miles from the airport terminal,

* 0.57 miles from a laundromat,

* 3.3 miles from an RV dump station,

* 1.8 miles from a Wal-mart Supercenter for grocery shopping,

* 4.9 miles from Costco for more grocery shopping,

* 5.2 miles from the motorhome garage.

* within 10 miles of all major attractions we will want to visit while here

In addition to the locked security gates, the area is very well-lighted at night…

It took a little while, but “relatively” speaking this locations suits our needs very well.

It Appears More Adjustments Will Be Necessary… (GA90)

So, unless I do something really different and unusual warranting a new blog entry, I’ll be posting entries from that trip.

This entry was posted April 24, 2012…

Yesterday I departed the Moose Lodge #2241 and went to the Workhorse Chassis repair facility about one mile away. The ABS light on the motorhome would not go out. I had such an interesting experience there that I want to cover it in a separate Blog entry real soon.

In yesterday’s Blog entry I indicated I was moving to VFW Post #401 near the airport where I’ll be meeting Mary one week from today. The proximity to Interstate Highway 40 at the Moose Lodge made it far too noisy for sleeping.

I arrived at the VFW Post in mid-afternoon and got settled in…

The locals tell me that Albuquerque ranges from 5,000 feet in elevation at the Rio Grande River valley to 7,000 feet on the eastside…which means it’s a little difficult to find a level parking spot. After surveying the VFW parking lot this was the levelest spot I could determine and settled in. However…all is not ideal.

The first thing is the weather. Albuquerque temperatures are at near all time highs. Yesterday at 84 degrees it was really hot! The forecast for today is 86 and tomorrow is 88. YUK! Which means I need to leave all the windows and vents open.

About 150 feet behind where I’m standing when I took the above photo is a busy four lane city street which gives off a substantial amount of noise.

But…here’s the real problem. To the left of the trees in the above photo is commercial storage facility. The VFW Post itself is in an industrial business complex. All this means I’m in a commercially zone area and not a residential zone. Last evening/night…in the commercial storage area to the left…there are apparently two young “musicians” and I use the term very loosely. They apparently are very dedicated and I’m told by the locals practice every night from 6:00 PM to after midnight. Last night they quit at 12:30 AM. There’s only two…one plays a bass guitar and the other plays the drums. Their “music” sounds very angry…hard/acid rock?…and they play it at full amplified volume! Not a good thing for an old guy like me!

So, what am I going to do about this situation? I don’t know at this moment. I really like the fact that the VFW Post is within locked security gates at night…so I’ll try to figure out something that will allow me to stay here.

A little later this morning I’ll survey the parking area on the other side of the building and see if I can find a spot that will somewhat move me away from the volume of the road noise and the “music”.

Have I ever told you I really do not like being in big cities? I’m sure I have! If I didn’t have to meet Mary one week from today…you can be bet I’d be a loooong way away from here!

Rogue River To Winston, Oregon

Mary is no longer available for RV traveling, but we remain good friends.
Because we have 4,000+ postings, I’ve invited her to continue posting entries on this blog.
I’m currently in my 22nd year of full-time RVing and my lifestyle is changing, For more info click

Yesterday I drove 75 miles from Rogue River to Winston, Oregon.

The day started by driving 25 miles to Sunny Valley, Oregon.

I primarily stopped here to visit the Applegate Wagon Trail Museum. I got here before the museum opened at 10:30 AM, so I took a short walk up the road to the old covered bridge. It’s the only one in Oregon that can be seen from Interstate Highway 5.

Here are some of the photos that I took…

As always you may left click upon an image to see an enlarged view and then click once again to see an even larger view…

Finally the museum opened…

When I got to the door, I was greeted with this surprise. I spoke to the owner a few days ago explaining I’m a travel blogger for the Seattle PI newspaper (which I am), and she did not say one word about the no photos policy. I will not patronize places with a no photo policy…

I went inside anyways and the owner allowed my to take only these two photos inside…

She invited me to take a quick walk-thru which I did. The museum look very well done and you may want to consider it if you are passing Exit 71 on Interstate Highway 5.

So, back outdoors I went. I took a few photos outside…

Back on the road once again, 50 miles and one hour later I arrived at VFW Post #9745 in Winston, Oregon. I’ve stayed here once a few months back where I have an electrical hookup…
