The motorhome is parked at Thousand Trails Lake Minden RV Resort in Nicolaus, California. I’m scheduled to depart here November 7th.

 

 

 

 

Since my RVing life is changing (see above), I’m starting to re-visit previously visited places. So rather than constantly re-blogging past entries, I’ve decided to do something different.

  In 2011-2013, Mary and I did a 682 day, 12,679 miles in the motorhome and 8,000 miles in the Bronco, circumnavigation of the United States, which I called The Great Adventure. I called it so because other than my oldest granddaughter’s high school graduation in June in Connecticut, I didn’t know where we would be going or when we would be there!

So, unless I do something really different and unusual warranting a new blog entry, I’ll be posting entries from that trip.

The motorhome is still parked at Moose Lodge #1283. We expect to leave here later this morning.

 

 

At 11:00 AM yesterday, Mary’s foster-daughter Karen and her family arrived for a visit. They live in Warrenton, Virgina…about 40 away. After chatting for a while in the motorhome we went inside the Moose Club for lunch…

After lunch we decided to visit Old Town Winchester…old Loudoun Street has been made into a pedestrian walking mall…

This courthouse is the third to be at this location and was built in 1840…

While the ladies took Adam to the Children’s Discovery Museum, Glen and I went through the Civil War Museum inside the old court house where a very knowledgeable Carol, the Museum Director, told us a number of interesting stories about the old court house…

 

 

 

 

 

The first floor was used by both sides as a hospital…

More than any other Civil War Museum I have visited…this one has an amazing number of different kind of cannon shells used during the war…some weighing in at 400 pounds…

While not he largest Civil War Museum I’ve ever been to, this one does an especially good job of presenting the terribleness and ferociousness of the Civil War…

After the museum, Glen and I met up with Adam and the ladies and went to a local ice cream place to help deal with the heat and humidity.

 

 

Yesterday it was 88 degrees with equivalent humidity. Too danged hot and humid for my liking!!!

Yesterday I drove the motorhome the about one mile to the Winchester Visitor Center for local information.

 

 

Winchester was the home of famous country singer Patsy Cline whose song “Crazy”, written by Willie Nelson, remains the #1 jukebox-played song of all time. At the center was a small Patsy Cline exhibit. Patsy died in a plane crash at the age of 30 near Camden, Tennessee. We visited that site recently and you can see the Blog entry by clicking this link…

Winchester, Virginia

The motorhome is currently parked at Mary’s home in Murphys, California. My current departure date is scheduled for December 1st. Two weeks from today and counting!

During this remaining time I’ll be attending to my cataract surgery, cleaning, routine maintenance and minor repairs to the motorhome and Bronco in addition to assisting Mary with her activities. None of these items are particularly exciting to write about…so…instead I’ll be showing Picasa Web Albums from our 682 day, 2011-2013 circumnavigation of the United States. It was Mary’s second circumnavigation and the sixth for myself.

Unless we do something unusual, this Blog will feature a photo album from the circumnavigation and will change daily. So come back tomorrow.

I HOPE YOU ENJOYED THE PHOTOS.

The cataract surgery of my right eye was conducted on October 9th and my left eye on November 6th. Both eyes are now at 20/20. The only remaining item left (other than eye drops until early December) is a visit to the optometrist to be fitted for reading glasses at the VA Hospital in Livermore, California on November 25th.

Yesterday was a partly sunny day and 60 degrees. Forecast for today is mostly sunny and 62 degrees.

Dillsburg, Pennsylvania

Yesterday I drove the motorhome the about 125 miles from Winchester, Virginia to Dillsburg, Pennsylvania where we spent the night at American Legion Post #26…

Here’s the usual dinette window photo…

Because of the unusual state boundary configurations in this area…we started our drive in Virginia, then into West Virginia…back into Virginia, then into Maryland and then into Pennsylvania.

The roads were smooth and traffic was relatively light although most of the drive was in a light rain. We will move along later this morning.

Dillsburg is a rather unusual name for a town so I looked it up and here’s what I found…The town is named for Matthew Dill, an immigrant from County Monaghan, Ireland, who settled the town in 1740. The village became a center for local agriculture. And now you know as well.  🙂

Along the way yesterday, we passed through Gettysburg, Pennsylvania where we stopped to do some grocery shopping. We’ve both explored Gettysburg battlefield and museum in the past…

A SMALL FAMILY REUNION

We got close enough to Warrenton, VA for a reunion with foster daughter Karen, her husband Glen, their daughter Kelly and her four-year old, Adam. The last family reunion Kelly was able to attend in Murphys was in 2004. My first time to meet her son. (Their daughter Sherry and granddaughter, Penny, couldn’t make it on this day.)

 

For travelers with children, Winchester has a great spot for kids and adults. The Pedestrian mall in the historic district of Winchester has no cars, wonderful shops and restaurants, tree-shaded walkways and benches.  Adam, under Grandpa Glen’s ever watchful eye, has decided the flowers need watering and he needs a flower in the cup to water it.  He must have seen mom put flowers in a vase.

What I thought was really cool about being out and about with a very active four year old and still get to visit, was the discovery center. We girls and Adam headed in one direction while Jim and Glen headed for the Civil War Museum, both on the same street, just blocks from each other.

The building is kid proof, has a king snake and live fish, art projects, play dough by the bucket full, Indian bark houses, everything imaginable to capture a kid’s interest. Adam loved dressing like a medic, taking his patient in the wheel chair…

Without any instructions at all, he knew to use the radio, make a siren sound and drive his patient to the hospital.

We were having fun watching Adam and didn’t stop and get Jim to take a picture of all of us. Darn. When we entered the building, the clerk asked if we were sisters. We told him yes.

Adam climbed this tall ladder to a bunk bed and then realized it is different coming down. It didn’t take him but a few doubtful seconds to figure out he had to turn on his tummy to retreat. A very smart kid.

Adam was delighted when his mom did too.

All of us had to see what we looked like in the silly mirror. It takes a kid to get you to play.

We didn’t know he would need a swim suit, but his cut-offs worked fine to cool off on the Splash Pad. He loved it and didn’t want to leave.

We rejoined the guys and Adam and I investigated the Do Your Own Pottery at the Polka Dot Pot, but it was not within the realm of a four-year old. The owners were great. They patiently explained to him how they make plates and dinnerware and how they melt a bottle into a dish.

This is a shot of the walking area of the mall in one direction, it is equally long in the other direction. Just a lot of good stuff to see and do here. We found the Red Fox Creamery and stopped for good old-fashioned ice cream.

Then we headed back for the car, just a block from the mall, a big covered parking garage that only charges fifty cents an hour to park your car in the shade. Such a deal. And, crossing the country in a Motor Home doesn’t always get you exactly where you want to go, especially in congested city areas in the East. I’m so glad it worked out for us to have a suitable meeting place, like the Moose Club, and one fun day together.
