Winchester, West Virginia Day 3 (GA499)

Mary is no longer available for RV traveling, but we remain good friends.
Because we have 5,000+ postings, I’ve invited her to continue posting entries on this blog.
I’m currently in my 23rd year of full-time RVing and my lifestyle is changing, For more info click Here

——————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————-

The motorhome is parked at Thousand Trails Lake Minden RV Resort in Nicolaus, California. I’m scheduled to depart here November 7th.

Since my RVing life is changing (see above), I’m starting to re-visit previously visited places. So rather than constantly re-blogging past entries, I’ve decided to do something different.

The motorhome is still parked at Moose Lodge #1283. We expect to leave here later this morning.

At 11:00 AM yesterday, Mary’s foster-daughter Karen and her family arrived for a visit. They live in Warrenton, Virgina…about 40 away. After chatting for a while in the motorhome we went inside the Moose Club for lunch…

After the museum, Glen and I met up with Adam and the ladies and went to a local ice cream place to help deal with the heat and humidity.

Yesterday it was 88 degrees with equivalent humidity. Too danged hot and humid for my liking!!!

Yesterday I drove the motorhome the about 140 miles from Grafton, West Virginia to Winchester, Virginia. Due to the configuration of state boundaries along the way we passed through Maryland for only eight miles. During that time we crested the highest point on U.S.Highway 50 in the east…Backbone Mountain at 3,095 feet elevation.

For numerous miles and in numerous places the road remained very narrow curvy and rough. It’s been many years since the original pavement and over the years patch upon patch has been applied with no apparent concern for smoothness of the finished product. Many times our speed was to be required to be less than 20 miles per hour.

Here are some of the photos I took along the way…

I had originally planned to spend the night in Romney, West Virginia about 40 miles west of Winchester. However, both the American Legion and Moose parking lots were too small with uneven grade. So we continued on to Winchester where we are parked at the rear of Moose Lodge #1283…

Yesterday I drove the motorhome the about 60 miles from Parkersburg to Clarksburg, West Virginia. 99% of the drive was on U.S. Highway 50. Basically a four lane, mostly straight east-bound with lots of ups and downs…

As we go further east the cities are getting older and the streets narrower. They were not made for a wide-body motorhome. When I drove this street, I barely had room to get past the parked cars…

During lunch we asked the locals what’s to see and do in Clarksburg. They all replied…not much. It seems the VFW is the hot spot in town. So we decided to walk around a bit and discovered this was the birthplace of Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson…a famous Confederate General who stood his ground like a stone wall…hence the name. He died at the Battle of Chancellorsville…

Harpers Ferry, West Virginia

The motorhome is parked the Thousand Trails RV Resort located La Conner, Washington. I’ve been here several times in past years. I’ll depart here September 2nd.

I’m just hanging out taking maximum advantage of my Thousand Trails membership and very agreeable weather.

Mary’s personal to-do list plate, which can only be handled by herself, continues to over-flow. Recently we acknowledged that her meeting up with me in September, just is not going to happen.   😦

I’ll next likely see her when I arrive at her home in November. A friend recently expressed a concern about the status of our relationship. Not to worry…it continues to function per our original agreement when we met in October, 2008. That is…I remain on the road and she will join me when her other life allows. We talk every day on the phone…sometimes more than once. It’s just the way life is!

On July 12th, I blogged about the great Civil War photo book I found in a Goodwill store. If you missed that posting, here’s the link…http://wp.me/pDCku-ckv

I’ve really enjoyed reading this book reminding me of the many places I’ve been that played an important role in the Civil War. I’ve decided it would be a great time to re-visit some of the places and share them with you. If I’m writing a blog entry about a place, means I read about it in this great Civil War photo book with nearly 4,000 photographs and I have been there! I’ll continue these Blog postings until I’ve until I do them all in my collection.

Today’s subject: Harpers Ferry, West Virginia…

Clarksburg, West Virginia

The motorhome is currently parked at Mary’s home in Murphys, California. My current departure date is scheduled for December 1st.

During this remaining time I’ll be attending to my cataract surgery, cleaning, routine maintenance and minor repairs to the motorhome and Bronco in addition to assisting Mary with her activities. None of these items are particularly exciting to write about…so…instead I’ll be showing Picasa Web Albums from our 682 day, 2011-2013 circumnavigation of the United States. It was Mary’s second circumnavigation and the sixth for myself.

Unless we do something unusual, this Blog will feature a photo album from the circumnavigation and will change daily. So come back tomorrow.

I HOPE YOU ENJOYED THE PHOTOS.

The cataract surgery of my right eye was conducted on October 9th and my left eye on November 6th. Both eyes are now at 20/20. The only remaining item left (other than eye drops until early December) is a visit to the optometrist to be fitted for reading glasses at the VA Hospital in Livermore, California on November 25th.

Yesterday was a partly sunny day and 62 degrees. Forecast for today is sunny and 60 degrees.
