Ventura To Santa Barbara, California

Yesterday I drove to motorhome the about 60 miles from Ventura to Santa Barbara, California. I’m now parked at Thousand Trails Rancho Oso (Bear Ranch in Spanish) RV Resort. In reality the park has a Santa Barbara mail address, but is physically located about 25 miles north of Santa Barbara in the Los Padres National Forest.

Mary continues to be occupied with personal business. I am now not expecting to see her again until I arrive at her home in Murphys, California about the third week in April. It’s just the way things are and we just have to deal with it.

I’m now in what I’m calling my “pacing mode”. Last October I had cataract surgery at the VA Hospital in Palo Alto, California. My surgeon wants me back in mid-April for a six-month post-operative eye examination. Palo Alto is only about 275 miles from my current location. So, in the meantime, I’ll “pace” my forward direction travels hoping stay in 65-75 degree temperatures all the while.

About 2/3 of the trip was on U.S. Highway 101 which runs along the coast of the Pacific Ocean…

Then you head north on California Highway 154 rapidly rising to the 2,000+ mountain pass…

Then a right for a four-mile drive on narrow Paradise Road…

Then another right on the 1.2 mile road leading to the park. This is where it gets really hairy because it’s one lane with few places where two RV’s may pass-by each other. If two RV’s that are towing vehicles behind meet…you’ve got a problem…someone will have to unhook and backup…

DSC05577

There are three switchbacks locations where it’s so narrow they have installed mirrors to help you see if there is traffic coming from the opposite direction. Fortunately for me, I met no outbound traffic…

Being in the mountains the park is situated such that there are several layers on which to park…my location is marked by the X…

The sites are kind of narrow…

And here is the usual dinette window photo…

Even though we are a week away from the beginning of Spring…yesterday it was 85 degrees without a breeze of any kind. Too danged hot! All sites face south which means having to close the front curtains all day. I fired up the air condition and read most of the day.

I HOPE YOU ENJOYED THE PHOTOS.

Yesterday was sunny and 85 degrees. Forecast for today is sunny and 84 degrees.

Seabee Museum – Port Hueneme, California

The motorhome is parked at VFW Post #1679 in Ventura, California. I’ll depart later this morning.

Palo Alto is only about 325 miles from my current location. So, in the meantime, I’ll “pace” my forward direction travels hoping stay in 65-75 degree temperatures all the while.

Yesterday I drove the Bronco the about ten miles to the Seabee Museum at Port Hueneme. This museum presents the history of the U.S. Navy Construction Battalion. It’s been said that a Seabee is a soldier, in a Navy uniform, with Marine training, doing the work of a civilian, getting W.P.A. pay. I spent two hours enjoying this great museum of these unsung heroes. Like  a lot of museums, this one has lots of darker areas lit by mini-spotlights making for difficult photography condition.

Here’s their Facebook page link…https://www.facebook.com/seabeemuseum

Channel Islands Maritime Museum – Oxnard, California

Mary continues to be occupied with personal business. I am now not expecting to see her again until I arrive at her home in Murphys, California about the third week in April. It’s just the way things are and we just have to deal with it.

Yesterday I drove the motorhome 75 miles from Acton to Ventura, California. It was a pleasant drive under cloudy skies…

Upon my arrival, I parked at VFW Post #1679 where the provided me with a power hookup and free WiFi. Their parking lot is not all that large, but they squeezed me in. A very friendly place!

Here’s the usual dinette window photo. Okay..the view isn’t great, but the vets and volunteers are very friendly…

After I got set-up, I drove the Bronco about eight miles to the Channel Islands Maritime Museum in Oxnard. I’ve been in many maritime museums…and this is one of the best. Lots of great paintings and ship models. Like many museums there were a lot of darker areas where the exhibit is lit by mini-spotlights making for difficult photography.
