Cataract Surgery Post-Op & Pre-Op Day

The motorhome is currently parked at Mary’s home in Murphys, California. My current departure date is scheduled December 1st.

Two days ago Mary drove us in her rental car (her Prius is in the body shop being repaired) the 141 miles to the VA Hospital in Palo Alto, California for my cataract surgery post-op and pre-op purposes. We departed at 9:30 AM and after a three-hour drive into the traffic congested area…we arrived safely.

DSC04957

We spent the night at a place called the Defenders Lodge which is made available to vets who live more than 50 miles or a two-hour drive from the hospital. Instead of a horrible drive in morning rush-hour traffic, we arrived fresh for my 9:30 AM appointment.

Dr. Suzann Pershing performed her functions flawlessly…

dsc04959

The first function was a post-op observation of the surgery performed on my right eye on October 9th. She pronounced everything in great condition. I went into surgery with 20/200 vision. After the operation I was 20/50 and yesterday I was 20/25.

The pre-op exam on my left eye now scheduled for surgery on November 6th revealed it is now at 20/100, up from 20/80 only two weeks ago. Time to take the next action soon.

There was no pain associated with the first operation. She offered either both near and distance lens to be installed in my eyes. She said most choose distance…which I did. So, I can clearly see distances and will now be able to drive without glasses. Colors appear much brighter. I will still have to wear reading glasses, but I knew that going into this operation. The only pain (in the butt) associated with the entire process is the amount of eye drops required both prior to and after the operation. In reality a small price to pay to have good vision for another 75 years!  🙂

What’s next? On November 6th we’ll return to Palo Alto for the surgery on my left eye. Once again we’ll spend the night in the Defenders Lodge, have an exam the next morning, then return to Mary’s Home.

Dr. Pershing indicates I should have no problem making my planned December 1st departure before it gets too cold here…providing there are no complications with the next surgery. I’m confident about her abilities and am looking forward to getting back on the road once again.

Online I read that the VA does about 50,000 cataract surgeries a year…about 1,000 a week. Also online I read that about 3,000,000 cataract surgeries are performed in the United States annually. Being an ex-engineer, I broke that down to 60,000 a week and 12,000 a day. Simply amazing!

Fort Donelson National Battlefield – Tennessee

The motorhome is currently parked at Mary’s home in Murphys, California. My current departure date is scheduled for December 1st.

NOTE: The cataract surgery on my right eye was successfully accomplished at the VA Hospital in Palo Alto, California on October 9th and I’m in my recovery mode. I have a post-op exam scheduled for tomorrow. Also at that time I’ll have a pre-op exam for my left eye. That surgery is scheduled for November 6th. Today Mary and I will travel to the Palo Alto VA Hospital where we will spend the night in the Defenders Lodge in order to be ready for tomorrow’s 9:30 AM appointment. No Blog Tomorrow.

During this time I’ll be attending to my cataract surgery, cleaning, routine maintenance and minor repairs to the motorhome and Bronco in addition to assisting Mary with her activities. None of these items are particularly exciting to write about…so…instead I’ll be showing Picasa Web Albums from our 682 day, 2011-2013 circumnavigation of the United States. It was Mary’s second circumnavigation and the sixth for myself.

Unless we do something unusual, this Blog will feature a photo album from the circumnavigation and will change daily. So come back tomorrow.

Cataract Surgery – One Done…One To Go

The motorhome is currently parked at Mary’s home in Murphys, California. My current departure date is scheduled December 1st.

Two days ago Mary drove us in her Prius the 141 miles to the VA Hospital in Palo Alto, California for cataract surgery on my right eye. We departed at 7 AM and after a three-hour and forty-five minute harrowing drive in morning rush-hour traffic…we arrived…

DSC04957

The surgery was scheduled for 1:00 PM…they wanted us there two hours prior to for operation preparation. The operation was performed by a very proficient Dr. Suzann Pershing…

dsc04959

After a bit of a wait, (they are really busy there), I was finally wheeled into the operating room. They had an IV stuck into my right hand and taped my head down firmly so that I could not move. They also had me attached to an EKG machine and constantly monitored my blood pressure during the operation. I was awake and talking back and forth with them during the entire procedure which took about 30 minutes. I spent about 45 minutes in the recovery room after which I was allowed to leave under my own power.

We spent the night at a place called the Defenders Lodge which is made available to vets who live more than 50 miles or a two-hour drive from the hospital.  I took this photo of myself in the bathroom….

DSC05026 (Copy)

At 10 AM yesterday morning I had a post-op exam and consultation with Dr. Pershing. She was very pleased with the results. My right eye which was at 20/200 prior to the operation is now at 20/50. I was told I should be down to 20/20 in about a week. Dr. Pershing said I would be sensitive to bright sunlight so she gave me these Blues Brothers shades to wear. When Mary took this photo she said I looked more like Stevie Wonder…

DSC05037 (Copy)

So, now that the operation is history…how do I feel? Well…as Dr. Pershing promised, there was no pain associated with the operation. She offered either both near and distance lens to be installed in my eye.

On October 24th I’ll go back to see Dr. Pershing for a follow-up post-op exam. At that time we will also do the pre-op exam for the surgery on my left eye now scheduled for November 6th. I’m still hoping to make my planned December 1st departure before it gets too cold here.

Online I read that the VA does about 50,000 cataract surgeries a year…about 1,000 a week. I met a number of other vets like me walking around with a patch over one eye. Also online I read that about 3,000,000 cataract surgeries are performed in the United States annually. Being an ex-engineer, I broke that down to 60,000 a week and 12,000 a day. Simply amazing!

Cataract Surgery Pre-Op Day – Palo Alto, California

The motorhome is currently parked at Mary’s home in Murphys, California. During the next two months I’ll be attending to my cataract surgery, cleaning, routine maintenance and minor repairs to the motorhome and Bronco in addition to assisting Mary with her activities. My current departure date is scheduled for December 1st.

Yesterday Mary drove her Prius the 141 miles from Murphys to the VA Hospital in Palo Alto, California for my cataract surgery per-operation exam and consultation. On this trip I did not take my regular larger Sony Camera…I opted instead to use our smaller reserve Sony Camera which still takes great photos.

The trip there took 3 hours and 4 minutes. As we crossed the Dumbarton Bridge, we ran into some morning fog…

As always you may left click upon an image to see an enlarged view and then click once again to see an even larger view…

DSC04956

The VA Hospital in Palo Alto is a big and modern facility. It always saddens me to go to the VA Hospital because I get to see the real heros who are still struggling with the effects of their injuries. I’m truly thankful I made it through my navy service without sustaining any injuries…

DSC04957

With the hundreds/thousands of vets they handle every day…I remain amazed at their efficiency and professionalism. Other than my yearly physicals…this will be the first time I’ve used their facilities. I feel very comfortable about my upcoming cataract surgery…

DSC04958

During my examinations I found out that my right eye is now at 20/200 and my left eye is at 20/80. It’s time to get the surgery done. We will get to the left eye in the next few months. I’m so thankful of modern science for without it I would be facing total blindness within the next few years.

Since I was so busy being examined and consulted I took no other photo there other than of my Doctor Pershing who will be performing my surgery on October 9th…

DSC04959

The trip home during rush (?) hour took four hours…

DSC04960

At 6:15 PM with the sun getting low on the horizon we were traveling north on the Jack Tone Rd and I caught this shadow photo of Mary’s Prius on the passing roadside…

Turning east on Highway 4 the sun is now at our back and I took these few photos of the passenger side mirror…

Heron Lake State Park, New Mexico

The motorhome is parked at American Legion Post #262 in Fortuna, California. Mary is home attending to personal matters. I expect to depart here on Monday.

I’ve had a change of plans. Last September during my eye exam at the Seattle, Washington VA Hospital I was told I have a large cataract in my right eye that should be attended to in the next year. It’s always been difficult getting to that VA Hospital, so yesterday I burned up a lot of my cell phone minutes making arrangements to change to a local VA Clinic in Sonora, California…about 25 miles from Mary’s home. I now have a March 7th appointment to meet my new primary care doctor there. He will get me to the eye people and I hoping that I might have my eye surgery before Mary leaves for her three-week trip with her grandson to Turkey on April 18th. I now have plans to arrive Mary’s home in 11 days on March 5th.

A note about today’s photo album. It contains 493 photos and will take about 18 minutes to view completely. I stayed at Heron Lake State Park for about three months nursing my painful injuries from the terrible accident of May 27, 2012. It’s a beautiful place and I saw many spectacular cloud formations, sunsets and sunrises…and, oh, the vast array of colors! Many were taken from the dinette window of the motorhome and some are in the watercolor mode. As always, all of the photos were taken in the hand-held mode. I hope you enjoy them near as much as I enjoyed taking them. If you missed the Blog entry about the accident, you can read about it by clicking this link…

A more relaxed mode..

After our 682 day on-the-go 2011-2013 circumnavigation of the United States, we have decided to slip into a more relaxed mode. In the next few months we will be traveling through areas previously explored. Unless we do something unusual, this Blog will feature a photo album from the circumnavigation and will change daily.

Monroe, Washington – Day 3

The motorhome is parked at Thousand Trails Thunderbird RV Resort in Monroe, Washington.

Yesterday morning I drove Mary to Seatac Airport south of Seattle Washington, She has some important business that needs her attention at home back in California…

As always you may left click upon an image to see an enlarged view and then click once again to see an even larger view…

DSC07063

With two people in the Bronco we were able to use the diamond lane and made it to the airport in 45 minutes. I then drove the 12 north to the VA Hospital where I had my first professional eye exam. I was told I have a cataract in my right eye and received a prescription to purchase prescription glasses. A couple of hours later my annual physical exam (which I missed last year because I was in New Mexico) went very well. No problems identified. Unable now to use the diamond lane, the ride back to the motorhome took 1.5 hours during the afternoon rush traffic. Makes me wonder why it’s called rush traffic!  🙂

Renewing my drivers license, and my VA exams accomplished completes two of the three reasons for returning to the Pacific Northwest. The third reason, having my friend and mechanic Kenny do some mechanical work on the Bronco and motorhome awaits completion. With heavy rain forecast for the weekend when we were supposed to get the work done, now may interfere with those plans. One Day At A Time is the order of the day!

Yesterday was a cloudy/sunny cool day. High temperature for the day was 63.

Forecast high temperature for today is 57 degrees, cloudy with rain developing.
