Here’s A Unique RV! (GA17)

Mary is no longer available for RV traveling, but we remain good friends.
Because we have 4,000+ postings, I’ve invited her to continue posting entries on this blog.
I’m currently in my 22nd year of full-time RVing and my lifestyle is changing, For more info click Here

The motorhome is parked at Thousand Trails Palm Springs RV resort at Palm Desert, California. I expect to depart March 6th.

Since my RVing life is changing (see above), I’m starting to re-visit previously visited places. So rather than constantly re-blogging past entries, I’ve decided to do something different.

In 2012-2013, Mary and I did a 682 day, 12,679 miles in the motorhome and 8,000 miles in the Bronco, circumnavigation of the United States, which I called The Great Adventure. I called it so because other than my oldest granddaughter’s high school graduation in June in Connecticut, I didn’t know where we would be going or when we would be there!

So, unless I do something really different and unusual warranting a new blog entry, I’ll be posting entries from that trip.

This entry was posted February 11, 2012…

We’re still at the Golden Sun RV Resort in Apache Junction, Arizona where we will remain hanging out and visiting with friends. See my Blog entry for more information about this place… http://wp.me/pDCku-3wM

Yesterday we enjoyed a nice breakfast visit with Mary’s cousin Karen at a local restaurant. The rest of the day was spent playing spider solitaire on my computer. It’s a real challenge when you do it in the difficult mode which uses eight decks. If you like giving your brain muscles a real workout…give it a try. It can be found on most computers as follows…all programs>games>spider solitaire. The rest of the day was spent reading.

In the meantime..I thought you might enjoy this unusual RV story…

Algodones, Mexico – A Unique Place In The World

Mary is no longer available for RV traveling, but we remain good friends.
Because we have 4,000+ postings, I’ve invited her to continue posting entries on this blog.
I’m currently in my 22nd year of full-time RVing and my lifestyle is changing, For more info click Here

The motorhome is parked at the Paradise Casino in Yuma, Arizona. I was expecting to leave here recently, but I’ve changed my mind. I currently have reservations at Thousand Trails in Palm Desert, California, February 13th. Between now and then???? For the moment I remain in Yuma.

I just love the ability to change plans at a moments notice. As I tell everyone…All my plans are firmly etched in Jello!

Today’s subject: Algodones, Mexico – A Unique Place In The World

Today’s Blog was first posted in January, 2014…

Yesterday I drove the Bronco seven miles to the border and walked into Los Algodones, Mexico. What makes this a unique place?…you ask. it’s because within a four block radius there are more pharmacies, doctors, dentists and opticians than a similar four block area anywhere else in the world!

To read about today’s location, click this link… http://gosw.about.com/od/southwestmiscellaneous/a/Algodones.htm

The primary reason for our visit was that I could get two pair of prescription eyeglasses…one for reading and one for driving at about 1/3 of the price in the United States. Several thousand snowbirds cross into Agodones, Mexico every day during the winter season.

Here’s a view of the border crossing as seen from the walkway of our parking lot. The tall building is our destination…

As always you may left click upon an image to see an enlarged view and then click once again to see an even larger view…

I have been here a number of times…Mary’s second.  One of the many fun things about Algodones is the “pitchmen”. Immediately passing through the gate into Mexico, several…all about the same time start shouting…“Looking for dentist, optical, Pharmacy? Over here for the best price. Cheaper than K-Mart!”

We proceeded to the street level of a newly…currently being built…plaza at the recommendation of a couple of friends of mine…

To Algodones Optical. Not some small dusty little store you might expect to find in Mexico…

The doctor told me I have a large cataract in my right eye which I should attend to within the next year. We picked up my new glasses three hours later. I got the two pair with ultra-light ply carbon lens and a 30 minute eye exam for $199.00 U.S. Dollars. Would have been about triple that figure in the United States.

While the glasses were being made, Mary visited her dentist office…

We wandered through some of the many tourist shops and finally ended up at our favorite eating place in Algodones. You won’t see a sign like this in any United States restaurant!…

At 10:00 o’clock in the morning we both had a Tecate Beer with our meals. Mary had the shrimp and fish tacos while I had the 1/2 chicken. As usual…wonderfully delicious!…

After picking up my glasses we crossed back into the United States.

I hope you enjoyed the photos and videos.

Unique And Efficient, But…

Mary is no longer available for RV traveling, but we remain good friends.
Because we have 4,000+ postings, I’ve invited her to continue posting entries on this blog.
I’m currently in my 21st year of full-time RVing and my lifestyle is changing, For more info click Here

The motorhome is parked at Fort Townsend State Park in Port Townsend, Washington. I’ll be departing from here later this morning.

(Note: I’m currently a little discombobulated right now. My normal mode is to blog what I experienced yesterday. Right now, I’m several blogs behind my experiences. I expect to be back in my normal mode within a couple of weeks.)

Today’s subject jumps back in to real-time to yesterday for one day. Unique And Efficient, But…

I wouldn’t want to live in it full-time! But it suits the needs of Paul and Terri just fine!

This blog entry is about my next-campsite neighbors, Paul and Terri from Tacoma, Washington and their unique RV. Paul is retired U.S. Army and a very talented handyman. They have had this rig since 2013 and traveled all over the western United States…

As always you may left click upon an image to see an enlarged view and then click once again to see an even larger view…

Their tow vehicle is the world’s only Ford Bronco 3. Ford Motor Company never made one. It’s actually a 1991 Ford Explorer that once had four doors…

DSC01503

Paul also custom-built the storage area…

DSC01501

Paul created their unique RV using a fold-up motorcycle trailer as a base. He told me the whole thing is held together by about eight bolts. When at home, he disassembles the unit, folds the trailer in half and stores it in the corner of his garage…

Pretty neat…

Their license frame says it all…

Paul told me he got some of his modification ideas from this website…

It’s always fun to run across unique things as I travel. Paul and Terri have created a most interesting and unique RV…something you don’t get to see every day. Safe travels, Paul and Terri. Thanks for sharing your unique RV with us!

I hope you enjoyed the photos!

While the rest of the nation bakes under high temperatures, this is why I am where I am! At Mary’s home in California, the next seven-day forecast is for 101+ temperatures!

Yesterday was cloudy/sunny and 64 degrees. Forecast for today is mostly sunny and 69 degrees.

Enjoying nice weather is another joy in the life of a full-time RVer!

I SAW A SHINING STAR

DSC08170 (Copy)It is never the order of things that Stuart and Dolores (Quyle) Mast, or any parent should outlive their child.

DSC08161 (Copy)

Sorrow and loss pinched hundreds of faces at the hilltop service at Quyle’s ranch, the property where Robbie Mast grew up, but there was something else there.

DSC08162 (Copy)The unquenchable spirit of Robbie himself, who left an indelible print on the wide world around him in his short 25 years.

DSC08165 (Copy)Principal of Avery Middle School, Michael Chimente, reminded us of his leadership role, as honor student, class president as a sixth grader and a young high school student who applied to be Principal at Bret Harte High School.

DSC08168 (Copy)The gang of six friends he grew up with helped us relish the humor, the mischief, the love of nature, beauty and friendship he brought into focus for them. Robbie liked to ride a bike, but he wanted to build bikes and ride around the world. It took him twenty-two months from New Zealand, Thailand, Singapore, Istanbul, Bulgaria, Italy, France and England. As the son of  wine makers, he worked in vineyards wherever he went; volunteered at a self-sustaining farm and spiritual center. He touched people;  made friends; took lessons home with him.

DSC08166 (Copy)Ryan Anderson and Bryan Hitchcock, two older friends, remarked how Robbie came to them and said he’d signed himself out of Gym in High School. He preferred hiking and biking and camping and nature. They convinced Bret Harte that he had engaged in private Boxing lessons in place of Gym and he was allowed to graduate with his class. Robbie hungered to invent, to explore, to challenge himself, to enjoy life with humor. He was an artist,  an actor, a story-teller. Wise beyond his years, he made every second of his life meaningful.  DSC08164 (Copy)Each speaker revealed another dimension to Robbie’s  life.  In his own words, from eighth grade, “Life is a journey…judge not…help those less fortunate…stop and smell the roses…never be content…question and wonder…people are good…love is the strongest force in the universe…life goes fast…live like every day was your last…

If you see a shining  star never let it fade away.
