2004 Central America trip…
This trip ended up being 343 days and 16,000+ miles through the back-country of Mexico, Belize, Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Panama. 11 rigs started the trip, within a week we broke into three smaller groups for ease of traveling. Only myself and one other rig went the full, pre-planned route. All the others dropped out for various reasons. All returned safely to the United States. I’m planning to show these photos, more or less, 10 a day, whenever I’m not doing something else deserving a blog entry. FINALLY, it must be remembered these photos are prior to my switching to digital in 2006. The films were developed during our trip and the lack of quality control sometimes is plainly evident.

We have moved on to Chiapa De Corzo, population about 60,000 and an elevation of about 1,500 feet, which means we are back in the heat and humidity…

Back on the road after leaving Santo Domingo Tehuantepec. While climbing a steep grade in the beautiful Sierra Madre Mountains, I heard a loud pop! Looking under the motorhome front end, I could see oil everywhere. I knew this was not going to be a good happening! Since I was not in a particularly safe spot, Bud, with his noisy, smelly diesel came to my rescue. We hitch up a tow rope and he towed my motorhome and Bronco about one-half mile further up the hill, where we were both safely off the roadway.
Here’s what I found out, after inspection of the problem. The tip of one of the blades of the engine cooling fan broke off, exited through the bottom of the engine fan shroud, and then cut through a wire mesh hose which feeds the oil to the radiator to cool the engine oil. Talk about bad luck! Just one inch more, the broken fan blade tip would have missed the oil line, and I wouldn’t have a major problem. Here’s what we decided to do…Bud and I will spend the night on the side of the road. Bob will go on to the next sizable village/town, and send a tow truck to a mechanic next morning. The tow truck towed me to the town of Tlacolula de Matamoras. The tow of 19 miles took about one hour. This was to prove to be the beginning of a “Major Cultural Experience!”
While waiting for the mechanic to do his work, Bud and I took the Bronco on a day-trip to the village of Santiago Matatlan, which proudly proclaims itself as “The Mezcal Capital Of The World”! Mescal is a liquor prepared from the heart of the mature agave plants about 12 years old…
