Freeport, Texas (GA380)

Mary is no longer available for RV traveling, but we remain good friends.
Because we have 5,000+ postings, I’ve invited her to continue posting entries on this blog.
I’m currently in my 23rd year of full-time RVing and my lifestyle is changing, For more info click Here

The motorhome is parked at Thousand Trails Thunderbird RV Resort in Monroe, Washington. I’ll depart here June 25th.

Since my RVing life is changing (see above), I’m starting to re-visit previously visited places. So rather than constantly re-blogging past entries, I’ve decided to do something different.

This entry was posted January 27, 2013…

Yesterday we drove the motorhome the about 60 miles from Wadsworth to Freeport, Texas. We’ll move along farther down the road later this morning.

You may have noticed recently that we have been slowly moving north and as we follow the Texas Gulf of Mexico Coast…east. The reason is because on February 6th, we have reservations to enter Sam Houston Jones State Park at Lake Charles, Louisiana for a one-week stay while we enjoy Mardi Gras!

After I had published yesterday’s Blog entry and before we departed, some morning fog created a nice photo opp along the river…

In all the museums we’ve been to, I’ve never seen a planetarium movie in a structure inflated by a huge fan. Lying in bean-bag chairs on the floor we watched a 20 minute movie entitled Earth’s Wild Ride. The scene is set many years into the future when people are living on the Moon. A grand father explains to his grandson and grand-daughter while staring at the long away Earth what life was like there long ago…

Yesterday we drove the motorhome the about 20 miles from Palacios, Texas to the Farm To Market Road 521 Colorado River Trail parking area along the Colorado River near Wadsworth, Texas where we spent last night. We are visiting with some folks who belong to the WIN (Wandering Individual Network), my ex-singles RV group of which I was a member from 1997 to 2007…my BM (before Mary) days. We’ll move on later this morning.

There is a really interesting historical story associated with this area of the Texas Coast. In 1687 the French Explorer La Salle lost all his ships during his exploration. A few years back the wreckage of the La Belle was found and more than 1,000,000 artifacts identified. To read this very interesting story, simply click this link…

Port Lavaca, Texas Day 1 (GA375)

This entry was posted January 22, 2013…

Yesterday we drove the motorhome the about 60 miles from Rockport to Port Lavaca, Texas.

The motorhome is parked at VFW Post #4403. We expect to depart here tomorrow.

Along the way we took a slight detour to go to the Aransas National Wildlife Refuge…the reputed Winter home of the elusive Whooping Crane. Mary was really excited because she hasn’t seen a Whooping Crane since she was a child. You can read about the Aransas National Wildlife Refuge by clicking their official website link…
http://www.fws.gov/refuge/aransas/

But all of Mary’s excitement was for naught…not a Whooping Crane was to be seen.

Here are some of the photos I took yesterday…

I’ve been meaning to comment about this topic for some time now…and here’s a good chance to do it. What I consider to be Texas’s excessively high-speed limits. In my humble opinion Texas sets its speed limits anywhere from 10 to 20 miles per hour too high. I recently saw a highway sign that said there were 2,795 road deaths in Texas in 2012.

The next photo provides a good example. The photo is of County Road 774 on the way to the National Wildlife Refuge. Believe it or not, the speed limit on this narrow two-lane road is 70 miles per hour! In my humble opinion 50 would be the proper speed limit. Safe speed for the motorhome was 45 miles per hour…

Now that I’ve gotten that off of my chest…here are some of the photos I took at the refuge. No Whooping Cranes…other than the alligator and the cactus, all other photos were taken at the full zoom range of my camera equivalent to 1500 mm. After our visit to Padre Island National Seashore a couple of days ago, the visit here was disappointing. But, one must take the good with the bad…
