—————————————————————————————————————

The motorhome is parked at Thousand Trails RV Resort in La Connor, Washington. I’ll depart here August 30th. I’ve been here a number of times in past years.

I’ll be hanging out in this general area until about the beginning of October, taking maximum advantage of my Thousand Trails membership and very agreeable weather.

Two days ago I arrived at this beautiful campground.

The park was probably built during the 1970’s and is located on land leased from the Swinomish Indian Tribe for 99 years. This area of Washington has always been one of my very favorite locations in all of the United States. The scenery is absolutely beautiful, the air is fresh and clean, it seldom gets too hot or cold, there are virtually no bugs or mosquitos and the people are very friendly. In 2001 and 2002 I worked here for the summer selling park memberships. I’ve been coming here for years and know the area very well. It’s my very favorite place to go to during the Summer…that’s why I keep returning.

Here’s a Google Earth view of the campground which is located on one-half mile of Puget Sound waterfront…

2015 Swinomish Indian Tribe Salmon Harvest – La Conner, Washington

The motorhome is parked the Thousand Trails RV Resort located in La Conner, Washington. I’ve been here several times in past years. My membership allows a maximum of a three-week stay, out for one-week and then you can return to the first park. My departure date is September 2nd.

I’m just hanging out taking maximum advantage of my Thousand Trails membership and very agreeable weather.

Mary’s personal to-do list plate, which can only be handled by herself, continues to over-flow. Recently we acknowledged that her meeting up with me in September, just is not going to happen.   😦

I’ll next likely see her when I arrive at her home in November. A friend recently expressed a concern about the status of our relationship. Not to worry…it continues to function per our original agreement when we met in October, 2008. That is…I remain on the road and she will join me when her other life allows. We talk every day on the phone…sometimes more than once. It’s just the way life is!

In my 16 years acquaintance with this Thousand Trails RV Resort…I’ve managed to see the Swinomish Indian salmon harvest about five times. It does not occur every year. The resort is located on leased land from the Swinomish Indian Tribe. Five days ago I published a blog entry about this event…not knowing it was about to happen again…yesterday.

If you missed that blog entry, you can see it by clicking this link…http://wp.me/pDCku-crX

It’s most enjoyable to watch such a tradition that has gone on for a very long time.

Once the net is in on the shore..they throw the salmon into big bins to be hauled away by a truck. Here’s a short video showing the flying fish…watch the person on the far left taking pictures…that’s Mary getting in close to the action…

While this is a one day event, not every year activity…it is a full day activity and they had four large bins on a truck ready to be hauled away.

In past years for $5, I went back to the motorhome with a live salmon that made a fine evening meal!

This photo is from the top of Mount Erie on Fidalgo Island, five miles to the northwest. At 1,273 feet it’s the highest elevation in the area…

Sunrise Over Skagit Bay…

The motorhome is parked at Thousand Trails RV Resort along the shore of Skagit Bay in LaConner, Washington. I’ve been here a number of times over the past years and always enjoy it here. It’s my favorite resort in the entire Thousand Trails system. My departure date is July 29th.

Mary is at home tending to personal matters…home maintenance, family, friends, rentals, etc..  She has made her flight reservations to meet me July 29th in Bellingham, Washington.

Yesterday morning just at sunrise (5:30 AM), I walked across the narrow road in front of the motorhome and down a very short path to catch a few photos….

As always you may left click upon an image to see an enlarged view and then click once again to see an even larger view…

This campground is on land leased from the Swinomish Indian Tribe. The salmon pens can be seen in the distance in the light morning mist…

The Swinomish take salmon only during regulated times of the year. Hopefully I’ll be here when that happens…

Yesterday was a sunny day at 71 degrees. Forecast for today is sunny and 73 degrees. Perfect!

NETTING SALMON

On our evening walk yesterday, a point of land that is normally deserted was alive with activity. We walked over to see what the encampment was about.

The land here is part of the Swinomish Indian Reservation. Thousand Trails leases from them and all fishing rights here belong to the Swinomish.  When we got to the top of the point, the fishermen were gathering in a huge net.

We watched for about a half hour as the gathered net got smaller and the pile of floaters got larger. They periodically tossed crabs back into the water that were caught in the net.

These two men pounded a huge stake into the ground to affix the next net being spread out while the fish from the first net were unloaded into bins on the beach.

All hands worked swiftly to free the fish from the netting and toss them into bins.

The catch is pink salmon.

It they happen to net a king salmon, like this prize, they set it aside. Maybe for the harvest celebration party. The Swinomish own a fish company and all proceeds are shared. This point is not the only spot they net salmon. The catch was not big this year according to one local observer.

This is a once a year event and we were glad we just happened to catch it.

The bin was loaded on a truck to be processed. From the number of bins, the work must have gone on all day. Then surprise, when we began our walk back, the tide had come in and we had to slog through water to get back to the park.

I will resume my China blog tomorrow.

Thousand Trails RV Resort, La Connor, Washington

The approach to the park on Reservation Road is very pretty driving through a tunnel of trees…

Approaching the ranger station…

I ended up in one of my favorite sites tucked in among the trees near the water on a small loop road…

It took a bit of maneuvering to get the wide-body motorhome between the trees…

Here’s the view from the passenger side of the motorhome…

Looking to the left behind the trees is the family center from where I’m able to receive the Thousand Trails Wi-Fi Internet signal and save on my Verizon Air Card usage…

To the right are shuffleboard, horseshoe and volleyball courts and Puget Sound…

Here you can just see the motorhome in the trees from across the grass of the family center…

A little closer view…

I even have a little companion…a baby bunny rabbit. Here’s (s)he’s about 25 feet away. I took this shot through the motorhome kitchen window on a tripod at full-zoom of my camera…

In forthcoming Blog entries, I’ll show you lots more photos of this beautiful place.
