Southaven, Mississippi Day 9 (GA469)

Mary is no longer available for RV traveling, but we remain good friends.
Because we have 5,000+ postings, I’ve invited her to continue posting entries on this blog.
I’m currently in my 23rd year of full-time RVing and my lifestyle is changing, For more info click Here

The motorhome is parked at Thousand Trails RV Resort in Monroe, Washington. I’m scheduled to depart September 28th.

Since my RVing life is changing (see above), I’m starting to re-visit previously visited places. So rather than constantly re-blogging past entries, I’ve decided to do something different.

This entry was posted April 23, 2013…

The motorhome is still parked at VFW Post #10567 in Southaven, Mississippi. The location is about 1/4 mile south of the Tennessee Border and about 10 miles south of the City of Memphis. We are now expecting to depart on Thursday.

Yesterday I drove the Bronco the about 10 miles to downtown Memphis. First stop was at the famous Peabody Hotel. You can read all about this hotel and the equally famous Peabody Ducks by clicking This Wikipedia link…

In general, photography conditions were terrible with harsh mid-day sun, dim lighting and deep shadows. Nonetheless here are some of the photos that I took yesterday…

The red carpet has been rolled out in readiness for the 11:00 AM March of the Peabody Ducks. They are brought down from their penthouse suite via elevator and march (actually it was more of a dash) on the red carpet to the fountain where they swim until 5:00 PM and then they are returned to their suite…

Yesterday I drove the Bronco the about 10 miles to downtown Memphis. We arrived at Sun Studio, the self-proclaimed Birthplace of Rock ‘n’ Roll. It was here that Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins and others made their famous early musical recordings. You can read all about the history of Sun Studio by clicking this Wikipedia link…

In general, photography conditions were terrible. Outside…harsh sunlight. Inside…darkish with mini spotlights and just about everything worth photographing was covered with plastic or glass making for lots of reflection. Then…also, there were lots of people to get in the way. Nonetheless…here are some of the photos that I took…

037

Time for the tour at last. Heading into the museum area I made it a point to be first in line so I could shoot a photo with no people in the way…

043

In addition to explaining the museum’s exhibits, Lahna played us some partial early Sun Studio recordings…

045

070

071

073

It proved to be an interesting visit despite the crowd. I would have preferred it to be like my tour through the Norman Petty Recording Studio in Clovis, New Mexico where Buddy Holly, Waylon Jennings and others made their early recordings. On that tour I was the only person because Clovis is out in the middle of nowhere rather than a large city like Memphis. If you missed that Blog entry…here’s the link…

Here’s the link to the museum…

After our time at Sun Studio, Mary’s neck started bothering her again so we called it a day. Must have been belting out that tune that did it! 🙂

The motorhome is still parked at VFW Post #10567 in Southaven, Mississippi. The location is about 1/4 mile south of the Tennessee Border and about 10 miles south of the City of Memphis. We will stay here while we explore the Memphis area for the next few days.

In yesterday’s Blog entry I indicated that Mary had a second appointment set with the acupuncturist for 9:00 AM. By 8:00AM she was feeling improved to the point that she called and cancelled. So, off we went for a day of sight-seeing. I happy to tell you she was smart enough to wear her neck support collar and she apparently made it through four hours of sight-seeing with no ill effects.

I drove the Bronco the about 10 miles to downtown Memphis. We arrived at the Lorraine Motel and National Civil Rights Museum at 10:00 AM. You can read about both of these places by clicking this Wikipedia link…
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lorraine_Motel

It was on the balcony in front of room #306 that Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated on April 4, 1968. You can read about that event by clicking this Wikipedia link…
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Assassination_of_Martin_Luther_King%2C_Jr.

We knew the would be a large crowd on a Saturday morning, so we went to the motel before the museum. Here are some of the photos that I took…

As always you may left click upon an image to see an enlarged view and then click once again to see an even larger view…

Standing on the exact spot where King was assassinated, I took this photo across Mulberry Street. The large opening in the lower right of the concrete wall is the entrance to the museum. James Earl Ray fired the fatal shot from the small bathroom window on the right directly under the metal chimney…

Southaven, Mississippi Day 6 (GA466)

Mary is no longer available for RV traveling, but we remain good friends.
Because we have 5,000+ postings, I’ve invited her to continue posting entries on this blog.
I’m currently in my 23rd year of full-time RVing and my lifestyle is changing, For more info click Here

The motorhome is parked at Thousand Trails RV Resort in Monroe, Washington. I’m scheduled to depart September 28th.

Since my RVing life is changing (see above), I’m starting to re-visit previously visited places. So rather than constantly re-blogging past entries, I’ve decided to do something different.

This entry was posted April 20, 2013…

The motorhome is still parked at VFW Post #10567 in Southaven, Mississippi. The location is about 1/4 mile south of the Tennessee Border and about 10 miles south of the City of Memphis. We will stay here while we explore the Memphis area for the next several days.

Mary had another neck painful day yesterday…so we decided to stay home. But she need to make copies of some legal paperwork…so we had to go out for that task.

First, we went through our closets to identify seldom worn or tight-fitting clothed for donation to Goodwill…

Ready at last…off we went. Along the way we passed Don’s Speed Shop with a number of seldom seen vehicles in the lot…so naturally we stopped to take photos…

“I was afraid you would want to go!” We both said that to each other, at about the same time, as we discussed Graceland, the home of Elvis Presley, less than five miles north of our parking location. Neither of us was interested in the several expensive tours where they shuttle tourists about like herds of cattle…and there was a herd of tourists taking those tours.

Instead we parked the Bronco and spent less than ten minutes taking photos along the street…

we decided to have a low-key outing yesterday.

So, after Graceland, we drove the Bronco the about five miles to the National Ornamental Metal Museum. The only one of its kind in the United States devoted exclusively to the advancement of the art and craft of fine metalwork. You can read all about this place by clicking their official website link…

Mary had a somewhat difficult night’s sleep and just said to me…I’m starting to feel a little better. I expect we’ll pick another low-key activity for today which you’ll get to read about tomorrow.

Yesterday was once again both hot and humid. About 85 degrees and % humidity. The Weather Wimp…as Mary calls me, says… Triple Yuk!!!

Mary decided she wanted to see an acupuncturist to try to relieve her pain. Due to faulty instructions and poor signage it took about 1.5 hours and 50 miles of driving to find him. She had about a one hour treatment. Returning directly to the motorhome still took 50 minutes and 24 miles. By time we returned it well after 1:00 PM and because it was so hot and humid didn’t feel like doing any sightseeing. We spent the afternoon and evening sitting in our chairs outside and reading.

She got a good night’s sleep and this morning is indicating she’s feeling noticeably better.

Since our little activity day, I’ve only got three photos for today. The first two are of the beautiful memorial here at VFW Post #10567 in Southaven, Mississippi…
