Los Algodones, Sonora, Mexico…

Mary is no longer available for RV traveling, but we remain good friends.
Because we have 4,000+ postings, I’ve invited her to continue posting entries on this blog.

The motorhome is parked at Shady Acres Mobile Home and RV Park in Yuma, Arizona. I expect to be here a while hiding out from the cold, wet weather. Average temperatures in January are high 69.6, low 47.6. In February, high 73.8, low 50.1. As nice as Yuma is, I wouldn’t want to be here in August.  🙂

Los Algodones, Sonora, Mexico is only a few miles drive from Yuma, Arizona and every day during the winter season, thousands of snowbirds go there.

Back in 2012, Mary and I walked across the border into Los Algodones, Sonora, Mexico. Why did we do that…you ask? So Mary could visit her dentist.

It’s reputed that within a four block radius there are more pharmacies, doctors, dentists and opticians here, than a similar four block area anywhere else in the world! Daily thousands of American and Canadian Snowbirds visit Los Algodones. I’ve been here a number of times…Mary first went there with me in 2009.

It can take as long as 2-3 hours later in the day to wait in line to cross back into the United States. The secret is to go early…get your business done…leave early. I abandoned Los Algodones dentists a number of years ago. My dentist is now in San Luis Rio Colorado, Sonora, Mexico…about 20 miles south of Yuma, Arizona. I visited him about two weeks ago.

Here are some photos I took while in Los Algodones…

As always you may left click upon an image to see an enlarged view and then click once again to see an even larger view…

Recently I’ve been running blogs about my 2004 Central America trip. While here I’m intending to continue those postings while also alternating with Yuma area blogs.

I hope you enjoyed the photos.

Yesterday was partly sunny and 61 degrees. Forecast for today is partly sunny and 62 degrees.

I Walk Into Mexico…

Average temperatures in January are high 69.6, low 47.6. In February, high 73.8, low 50.1. As nice as Yuma is, I wouldn’t want to be here in August.  🙂

Yesterday morning I drove the Bronco the 25 miles south of Yuma, Arizona to San Luis Rio Colorado, Sonora, Mexico for my annual visit with my dentist. I’ve been going to Dr. Sergio Bernal for about 10 years. I leave early so I can be first in line which means no waiting when he opens at 9:00 AM. The sun does not break the horizon until 7:40 AM which means difficult photo conditions with the sun so low on the horizon. (The below  photos are from last years trip.)

As always you may left click upon an image to see an enlarged view and then click once again to see an even larger view…

Right at the border on the Arizona side, last year I parked the Bronco in a city park. This year it’s all changed. The park is now closed to vehicles and now San Luis has street parking meters…

Then walk across the border crossing. No cameras allowed beyond this point…

DSC04812

Once into Mexico, it’s only about a one minute walk…

DSC04813

Turn left and here’s his office…

DSC04814

Sergio has a nice two chair facility where he provides very good services (he’s a dental surgeon) at very good prices compared to the United States. In my case a checkup and cleaning was $20. Such a deal!. Here he is with his dental assistant…

DSC04816

About a one minute walk back to the border crossing to re-enter the United States took about a 15 minute wait in line last year. This year security has been greatly increased, but, no waiting in line. I walked right up to the border patrol checkpoint and within a few seconds I was back in the United States…

DSC04817

Even with six lanes in progress, entering the United States by vehicle is about a two-hour wait in a very long line. The car line this year still looked very long…

DSC04818

I’m all set dental-wise (hopefully) for another year. Sergio told me that for an old guy, I’ve still got really good teeth!  🙂

Los Algodones, Sonora, Mexico

The motorhome is now parked at the Paradise Casino in Winterhaven, California. Less than 1/2 mile away is the Colorado River and on the other side…the sunniest place on Earth…Yuma, Arizona. I’ve been hanging out and enjoying the nice weather. I have several friends in the area. Mary is now expecting to rejoin me in mid-February. I’m planning to leave this area later this morning.

I’ve been coming to this Yuma, Arizona area coming on to 20 years and have thoroughly explored the area. Rather than go back to these various places and re-create the wheel, (unless I do something different and unusual) I’m electing to republish some of my earlier blog entries while I await Mary’s arrival.

Here’s a reprint of the blog entry from January 21, 2012…

Yesterday Mary and I walked across the border into Los Algodones, Sonora, Mexico. Why did we do that…you ask? So Mary could visit her dentist.

It’s reputed that within a four block radius there are more pharmacies, doctors, dentists and opticians here, than a similar four block area anywhere else in the world! Unfortunately Mary needs one more appointment…so next Monday we’ll once again return to Los Algodones, Sonora, Mexico. Hopefully that will conclude Mary’s dental activity and we can head on out to the Great adventure on Tuesday. If you do not know what the Great Adventure is…you can find out by clicking this link…

In other news…

Today I’ll start slowly drifting northward…3 days and 300 miles to Las Vegas, Nevada. My son flies in on Saturday to attend a week-long convention. I’ve not seen him in 1.5 years. I also have a couple of other friends who live there. I expect to be there for at least two weeks.

Yesterday was a cloudy/sunny at 75 degrees.  Forecast for today is sunny and 76 degrees.

Harlingen, Texas

The motorhome is parked at Mary’s home in Murphys, California. She is busy with personal matters.

Last September during my eye exam at the Seattle, Washington VA Hospital I was told I have a large cataract in my right eye that should be attended to in the next year. My new doctor has made the necessary arrangements to have my eye problem corrected. I’m hoping to have my cataract surgery completed prior to Mary going to Turkey with her grandson on April 18th.

On March 24th, we drove the Bronco 104 miles (one way) to the VA Medical Center at Livermore, California for my eye exam which confirmed my cataract in my right eye. I was told I’m a candidate for surgery. I now await a phone call to establish an appointment for a consultation with an eye surgeon.

In other news…

When I drove the Bronco to Livermore 10 day ago, the transmission started acting up…slipping in drive. I took it to a local service had a new transmission filter and oil installed…no change. Yesterday morning I drove it to Sonora about 30 miles to Quality Transmission to have the transmission rebuilt. It will be ready early next week. The A4LD transmission had been a problem child for Ford and mine apparently is no exception.

A more relaxed mode..

After our 682 day on-the-go 2011-2013 circumnavigation of the United States, we have decided to slip into a more relaxed mode. In the next few months we will be traveling through areas previously explored. Unless we do something unusual, this Blog will feature a photo album from the circumnavigation and will change daily.
