San Bernardino To Acton, California – The Longer Way

Mary is no longer available for RV traveling, but we remain good friends.
Because we have 4,000+ postings, I’ve invited her to continue posting entries on this blog.
I’m currently in my 22nd year of full-time RVing and my lifestyle is changing, For more info click Here

Yesterday I drove the motorhome 104 miles from San Bernardino to Acton, California. The longer way.

My normal route would have taken me via California Highway 138, a drive of 69 miles. There is an unusual cold weather front in the area. Highway 138 crosses Mountain Top Pass at 4,810 feet of elevation. Because of the cold front chains were required yesterday morning. I have no chains and really have no interest in driving the motorhome in snow.

So instead, I took the longer routes of Interstate Highways 210 and 5 and California Highway 14 for a total of 104 miles. 35 miles longer than my normal route. The last 10 miles of the trip, I traveled on Soledad Canyon road which is very scenic and contains a number of commercial movie ranches and filming locations.

In 2015, I published a blog entry about Soledad Canyon Road which you can view by clicking this link…

Internet Connection Technical Problems And Snow In Tuscon, Arizona (GA21)

Mary is no longer available for RV traveling, but we remain good friends.
Because we have 4,000+ postings, I’ve invited her to continue posting entries on this blog.
I’m currently in my 22nd year of full-time RVing and my lifestyle is changing, For more info click Here

The motorhome is parked at Thousand Trails Palm Springs RV Resort at Palm Desert, California. I expect to depart March 6th.

Since my RVing life is changing (see above), I’m starting to re-visit previously visited places. So rather than constantly re-blogging past entries, I’ve decided to do something different.

In 2012-2013, Mary and I did a 682 day, 12,679 miles in the motorhome and 8,000 miles in the Bronco, circumnavigation of the United States, which I called The Great Adventure. I called it so because other than my oldest granddaughter’s high school graduation in June in Connecticut, I didn’t know where we would be going or when we would be there!

So, unless I do something really different and unusual warranting a new blog entry, I’ll be posting entries from that trip.

This entry was posted February 15, 2012…

Yesterday I published about seven hours later than usual. When I fired up my computer at my normal time of about 5:00 AM…no internet signal!

I played around with it for about 30 minutes doing things I’ve learned to do to rectify the problem. Nope…not working today. I got on my cellphone and called Verizon Technical Support. This is what my Verizon Modem looks like…

As always you may left click upon an image to see an enlarged view and then click once again to see an even larger view…

He had me run some more tests and concluded that I had a defective SIM Card. In the above photo you can see where the SIM Card slips into the Modem. He identified the location of the nearest Verizon Wireless Store…about 15 miles distant from my current location about 20 miles north of Tucson, Arizona where I could get a new replacement SIM Card.

Once there the customer service rep swapped out the SIM Card, updated the Verizon Access Manager and Modem software. It functioned…kinds-sorta. It worked work only some time and when it did…did it slowly. He finally declared the Modem to be defective. He ordered a replacement shipped over night at Verizon’s cost.

I’ll return to the store later this morning to pickup my replacement unit. In the mean time I’m struggling along with the old semi-functioning modem.

While dealing with this problem…the day had become cold and cloudy. At noon it was only 41 degrees and it started to snow! Snow it did…for about an hour. We got a total of one inch and by 2:30 PM it was all gone. A rare…but fun happening.

Here are some photos that I took…

So why am I making a big deal out of a little bit of snow. Here’s why…

I’m in my 17th year of full-time RVing and I spend all my Winters in the warm, sunny south land. In 17 years of doing so…this is the first time I’ve ever been snowed upon. It was a fun happening…but if it doesn’t happen again for another 17 years…that will be just fine with me!

TWO FOR THE PRICE OF ONE! MARY WROTE A MANY GREAT BLOGS…SO WHENEVER SHE PUBLISHED A BLOG POSTING THE SAME DAY THAT I DID…YOU WILL BE ABLE TO READ HER BLOG BY CLICKING THE BELOW LINK! DO IT NOW…!!!

I HOPE YOU ENJOYED THE PHOTOS.

Yesterday was sunny and 73 degrees. Forecast for today is sunny and 78 degrees.

The motorhome is parked at the Paradise Casino in Yuma, Arizona. I expect to depart here January 10th.

Todays subject: Why I Am Where I Am…

Here we are in early January. Yesterday I talked to several friends on the phone. Here’s what they told me and their location…

Monroe, Washington – 21 degrees

Salem, Oregon – 14 degrees and ice

Sixes, Oregon (on the coast) – 26 degrees and a foot of snow

Columbia, South Carolina – expecting three inches of SNOW

And finally, the photo below is Mary’s rental property in Wimer, Oregon where I was about three months ago. Mary told me yesterday the renter just reported five inches of new snow, 11 degrees AND no power for the last 2.5 days!!!

OLYMPIC NATIONAL PARK-HURRICANE RIDGE

DSC09541 (Copy)

Glaciers still survive on Mount Olympus, but fast melting has certainly affected the area.

DSC09568 (Copy)

Normally at this time of year, this vast ridge is snow-covered. We enjoyed the scenery and the beautiful drive up to Hurricane Ridge even so.  Olympic National Park has a fantastic film about the flora and fauna, the rainforest aspects, the water shed and natures balance. Once neglected, “…nuthin’ up there but stunted trees…” made it possible to save species known to exist only  here, the marmot is one.  Unfortunately, people have introduced invasive species, the natural predator, the wolf is gone, black bears are gone and deer have to be thinned. Maybe someday, the predators can be reintroduced.

DSC09583 (Copy)

Two major paved trails, Hurricane Hill and The Meadow were available. We chose the Hurricane Hill trail, from which you can see Vancouver and the entire sound. We got to within an hour and a half of the top before it got too steep for us. There are many trails, unpaved, off the two main ones for avid hikers and back packers. And, many deer. We met this one on the trail walking toward us, quite unafraid.

DSC09585 (Copy)

She simply walked around us…DSC09588 (Copy)

…and returned to the path behind us.

DSC09592 (Copy)

As we hiked, the mountain to our right as we climbed, is a mountain that gets less rain on its western slope.

DSC09597 (Copy)

I spotted a Christmas tree.  It looked as though someone took the time to add silvery glitter to the top of the tree. It sparkled in the sun. Could it be ice? Or…?

DSC09596 (Copy)

A close up reveals the source. It is sap. We noticed this sap on several trees after this one.

DSC09607 (Copy)

As we hiked in a strong breeze, we noticed the wind sculptured trees. We warmed and I peeled my hooded sweatshirt off and wrapped it around my waist.

DSC09627 (Copy)

This lone alpine blue bell was on its last bright show.

DSC09606 (Copy)

It was a beautiful day to visit. We enjoyed a little over four hours at the park. If you go, bring plenty of water and a picnic lunch.

DSC09643 (Copy)

As we drove away, we saw another herd of deer along the road. Several are out of sight in the bushes.  If you want to see all of my pictures, click on the link below.
