The motorhome is parked at Mary’s home in Murphys, California. I expect to leave here May 8th. While here, I’ll be doing routine maintenance, repairs and general cleaning.

 

 

Since my RVing life is changing (see above), I’m starting to re-visit previously visited places. So rather than constantly re-blogging past entries, I’ve decided to do something different.

 

 

In 2011-2013, Mary and I did a 682 day, 12,679 miles in the motorhome and 8,000 miles in the Bronco, circumnavigation of the United States, which I called The Great Adventure. I called it so because other than my oldest granddaughter’s high school graduation in June in Connecticut, I didn’t know where we would be going or when we would be there!

 

 

So, unless I do something really different and unusual warranting a new blog entry, I’ll be posting entries from that trip.

Yesterday I departed Silver City, New Mexico after a nice 13 day visit. Okay…I could have done nicely without having to rebuild my 1986 Ford Bronco II transmission. But…if you have to breakdown…Silver City is a good place to do it. Thank you again Moose Lodge #1718 for your hospitality.

 

 

Historic downtown Silver City. New Mexico is very clean and has lots of nice old buildings including the Silver City Museum detailing the Big Ditch.

 

 

I was so busy while there…I didn’t have a chance to show you some photos of the historic downtown area. So here they are…

Yesterday I drove the 44 miles (88 miles round trip) from Silver City, New Mexico to this location…for two different reasons. First was to experience this very unique historical location and second…was to test my newly rebuilt transmission in my 1986 Ford Bronco II which I got out of the shop two days ago. The 44 miles one way is a lot of twisty mountainous roads…so much so they advise a driving time of two hours. Because it was so steep and twisting…out of the total of 88 miles…I drove about 80 of those miles in second gear. I’m pleased to report the transmission performed strongly and satisfactorily. The site location was also a very nice experience.

 

 

Under very difficult photography conditions…that is brilliant overhead sunshine and very dark shady interiors of the dwellings…I ventured forth.

Note…I’m currently hanging out in the motorhome at the Moose Lodge in Silver City, New Mexico waiting on the completion of a transmission rebuild for my 1986 Ford Bronco II. I’m expecting the work to be finished today.

Two days ago I wrote about the dis-assembly of the transmission…

Yesterday morning I went to the garage to see how they were progressing. The replacement parts they had to order arrived and they were in the process of the re-assembly of the transmission. Nacho, the shop owner and my mechanic, told me that they had finally come across the real culprit… a mutilated planetary carrier assembly…three inches in diameter. First a top view. Look closely…there are supposed to be three gears…one each at 12-4 and 8 o’clock positions. If you look closely you will see 12 o’clock gear is missing…

The mechanics were busy so I did not get into a long-winded discussion of why this part failed. Being an ex-engineer my guess is metal-fatigue. 26 years of internal heat and stress on this aluminum part finally took its toll. As I said in earlier Blog entry…the transmissions in these older Ford Bronco II’s were known to be problem-childs.

 

 

The exploded parts view shows 158 individual pieces in the transmission…

 

 

Hopefully the transmission will once again be in good running order and I’ll soon be back on the road again!

Last Friday I explored the historic downtown of Silver City, New Mexico. Atop Chihuahua Hill at the south end of the city sits La Capilla…which in Spanish Means “small chapel” It was during the climb of this rather short, but steep, climb that the Bronco transmission revealed it was having problems. Because of these problems, my visit to La Capilla was distracted. While waiting a few minutes for the transmission to cool down a little, I did manage to take these three photos of the nice view of Silver City…

Much like a light switch on a wall…we flick the switch and presto…there’s electricity! Most folks do not have a concept of the complexities behind that switch that brings the electricity to our homes. And it is indeed a complex system.

 

 

Much the same with the automatic transmissions in our vehicles. We simply start the vehicle…put it in drive or reverse and be on our way. Most folks do not have a concept of the complexities of this device that takes the energy produced by an engine and converts it to vehicle motion.

 

 

As you saw in the above note I’m awaiting completion of a transmission rebuild for my 1986 Ford Bronco II. Yesterday I spent three hours at the garage where they began the dis-assembly of the transmission. With Nacho’s help I was shown the reasons for my transmission failure as a thrust washer that had broken in to two pieces and went where they were not supposed to be.

Nacho, the mechanic, mounted the transmission casing to a work bench to begin the dis-assembly process…

The work bench is covered with internal parts from the transmission which is only about one-half dis-assembled at this point…

 

 

 

 

 

I’m not sure how many individual parts there are in my transmission…but I guessing somewhere well in excess of 100. And unless they all go together in a very precise manner…the transmission will fail to do its job. That’s one of the reasons that a transmission rebuild is so expensive.

 

 

However…I hold no hard feeling against my transmission for needing to be rebuilt. Automobiles are nothing more than mechanical. electrical and electronic components in a single vessel. They work hard to deliver us where we desire to go. After 150,000 miles…I have no complaints. With a little time and a few $’s I’ll once again soon be on my way. We only give it a thought when it doesn’t work.

 

 

Nacho is hoping to have it ready for me by Friday afternoon.

The motorhome is parked at Mary’s home in Murphys, California. I expect to be here 2-3 weeks. While here, I’ll be doing routine maintenance, repairs and general cleaning.

 

 

Since my RVing life is changing (see above), I’m starting to re-visit previously visited places. So rather than constantly re-blogging past entries, I’ve decided to do something different.

 

 

In 2011-2013, Mary and I did a 682 day, 12,679 miles in the motorhome and 8,000 miles in the Bronco, circumnavigation of the United States, which I called The Great Adventure. I called it so because other than my oldest granddaughter’s high school graduation in June in Connecticut, I didn’t know where we would be going or when we would be there!

 

 

So, unless I do something really different and unusual warranting a new blog entry, I’ll be posting entries from that trip.
