While in Shelton nine days ago, I had another first-time life experience!

I visited the 40 et 8 Veterans Club. In all my years on the road I have never seen or heard of this club. The one in Shelton is Post #135. It’s a very active and friendly veterans club. The national headquarters are located in Indianapolis, Indiana and is an independent fraternal organization of veterans.

Established in 1920 by members of the American Legion as a fun and honor society, Forty & Eight’s founders based the organization on their military experiences in W.W. 1 France. The box car of the French railways, which carried forty men or eight horses to the front, is a symbol of the organization. The numerals “40/8” on a triangle of French horizon blue is the logo of La Societe des Quarante Hommes et Huit Chevaux… The Forty & Eight.

Membership is by invitation only to honorably discharged veterans and active duty personnel.

Yesterday I drove the motorhome 50 miles from Bremerton to Port Hadlock, Washington.

While in Shelton, Washington last week, I came across the Skyline Drive-in Theater. It was established in 1962. It’s been a number of years since I’ve seen one of these still in operation…

One week ago today, I visited Taylor Shellfish Company in Shelton, Washington which began in 1891. The largest shellfish company in the United States processes 3.5 million dozen (42,000,000) oysters in addition to many mussels and clams a year.

I arrived without an appointment, yet Erin Ewald, Environmental Compliance Manager, broke away from her duties to give me a tour of their facilities. I was truly impressed with the size and cleanliness of their operations…

Every piece of product is traceable to its farm location…

 

 

 

 

A huge freezer hold the products until shipping. Erin told me most products ship within 24 hours of arrival from a farm…

A few days ago I stopped at the Squaxin Indian Tribe Museum in Shelton, Washington. Like many Indian museums they do not allow interior photography, so I did not get to see the museum…which of course is their right. My right is not to patronize establishments with that policy, which I did. When establishments have that kind of policy…we both lose.  😦

Yesterday I drove the motorhome 45 miles from Shelton to Southworth, Washington. I’m parked in the yard of my friend Ned Bedinger. I’ll depart later this morning.
