Jim says:
Chappaquiddick Island is a small island off the eastern end of the larger island of Martha’s Vineyard and is part of the town of Edgartown, Massachusetts. The two islands are separated by a water passage of only about 500 feet. As of the 2000 census, the island had only 172 year-round residents and 475 houses, as well as numerous wildlife preserves and beaches.
Few people ever heard of Chappaquiddick Island…prior to 1969. That all changed when then Senator Ted Kennedy who was married at the time, drove his car off of a small wooden bridge and an attractive young female perished.
The below Google Earth image will help you understand the relationship of the two islands.

We await the ferry to cross the 500 foot water passage to Chappaquiddick Island.

There’s only about two miles of paved road on Chappaquiddick Island. All the rest are sand/dirt roads.

This is the famous Dike Bridge circa 2010.

This is the famous Dike Bridge when I took the photo in 1978. Notice that there were no guard rails back then
