The motorhome is parked at Shady Acres RV Park in Yuma, Arizona. I may be here until March 4th.

 

 

 

Since my RVing life is changing (see above), I’m starting to re-visit previously visited places. So rather than constantly re-blogging past entries, I’ve decided to do something different.

  In 2011-2013, Mary and I did a 682 day, 12,679 miles in the motorhome and 8,000 miles in the Bronco, circumnavigation of the United States, which I called The Great Adventure. I called it so because other than my oldest granddaughter’s high school graduation in June in Connecticut, I didn’t know where we would be going or when we would be there!

So, unless I do something really different and unusual warranting a new blog entry, I’ll be posting entries from that trip.

Yesterday I drove the motorhome about 25 miles from Rochester to North Dartmouth, Massachusetts. I expect to depart here in about one week.

 

 

Mary will fly in to meet me at Boston, Massachusetts this afternoon.

 

 

Yesterday was a semi-decent day. With a light cloud cover the high temperature was 81 degrees with 81% humidity. Finally a day without air conditioning. Still too hot and humid for my liking.

 

 

The motorhme is parked at the home of my cousin Bob and his wife, Donna..

Along the way here yesterday, I passed through the town of Fairhaven where I lived as a young child from ages 5-10. For it is here that you can get the best meal of Fish ‘n’ Chips in the whole world! At Gene’s Famous Seafood which has been here since 1963…

 

 

 

 

 

They have a great menu of fresh seafood…

 

 

 

 

 

There’s another big piece of fresh Cod fish under all those fries for only $8.95…

Yesterday we drove the motorhome the about 50 miles from Harlingen to Port Isabel, Texas.

 

 

We spent the night parked at Wal-Mart in Port Isabel because of its convenient location. Parked at the far edge of the parking lot made for a relatively quiet night’s sleep. We’ll move on this morning to Brownsville about 25 miles distant..

North Dartmouth, Massachusetts – Day 4

The motorhome is parked it my cousin Bob’s and his wife Donna’s home at North Dartmouth, Massachusetts.

Yesterday was a semi-decent day. With a light cloud cover the high temperature was 79 degrees with 80% humidity. Still too hot and humid for my liking.

Yesterday morning while Bob was at his part-time job, Donna, Mary and I went to the Glass Museum at New Bedford about five miles away. Rather than the glass pieces themselves, I enjoy the photographic element of seeking out the random patterns, shapes and colors. Here are some of the photos that I took there…

In the afternoon, the four of us drove the about 12 miles to Mattapoisett to visit Marissia, their 18 year old grand-daughter who has been blind since birth…

Marissa is a truly remarkable young woman despite her handicap. In addition to being attractive, she’s very intelligent and personable. She recently has traveled to the Grand Canyon in Arizona and France. She will soon start college at Bridgewater State University about 45 minutes from her home and will study communications. In 2007, she had a neat experience, The family keeps a copy of the newspaper article in a glass frame on the living room wall…

Bob and Donna then took us on a driving tour of the scenic town of Mattapoisett including this lighthouse on the shore of Buzzards Bay. I shot this photo using the watercolor mode of my camera…

We concluded the afternoon with a meal at a seafood restaurant where I had the New England Clam Chowder and Broiled Scrod. Another nice day!

TILLAMOOK CHEESE AND HOT SAUCE

On our three capes drive, we entered the town of Tillamook. Everyone knows this place is home to a huge cheese industry. I don’t remember how many people they employ nor the number of dairy farms in the area. We were hungry and asked at the local Eagles Club for a recommendation for a seafood restaurant. We were sent to this ramshackle, roadside, fish stand that sells  basic eats, fish & chips, fish burger, crab salad, fresh oysters, etc. about 10 different items. It’s located directly across the highway from the cheese factory.  On each of the four little tables were three or more choices of hot sauce. I tried three of them on my great cod burger but the Irazu, a volcanic hot sauce made from “ghost peppers” was stunningly good and, I do like it hot. I know there are hotter sauces available, because this place has almost every one made, except, one of our favorites, Marie Sharps Habanero.  Here is a sampling:

When the cook noticed I’d tried the Irazu, he said, ” We have ghost peppers here. We make jerky out of it.”  He brought over a jar of them and carefully offered me a sniff.

I took a light sniff being careful, then the ghost factor kicks in. You don’t smell them at first, then the heat hits your nose. Ghost pepper is just a nickname for some hot peppers that, as the sauce names hint, are potent as in  Death, Pecker Pucker, Hemorrhoid Cleaner, and other colorful names.  What a hoot!  I could kick myself for not picking up  some Irazu, but we have one unopened bottle of  Blitz we bought in Louisiana last year, and our Marie Sharps is 3/4 full yet.

Cheese at Tillamook is excellent stuff.  They allow you to sample it. They don’t go in for anything fancy, just basic cheeses, milk, yogurt, and ice cream.  My last visit to a cheese factory was in Pleasanton, CA. in the 50’s where you watched the curds and whey being hand paddled by a guy with huge muscles. The strong smell of sour milk was enough to make you temporarily give up cheese. Here everything is stainless steel, climate controlled, automated, super clean and fascinating to watch the assembly lines. First formed into 30 pound blocks, then cut to the various sizes. Any uneven bits of cheese, or mistakes in the packaging go into a bin for shredded cheese.

Four  separate lines on this floor cut medium cheddar, sharp cheddar into one and two-pound sizes.  Without stopping the new sized cheese runs into the automatic wrapping and vacuum packaging machines. Each line sends up one package per second. Now that’s a lot of cheese.  We stopped in their restaurant  for a dish of high quality ice cream.

Our last stop of the day, mainly just a drive by, was a look at one of the largest timbered structures in the world. It was used to house blimps in the days when blimps looked like the new mode of air travel.

We Arrive In Wayne, New Jersey

Jim says:

Yesterday we drove about 100 miles and arrived at my friend’s Jim & Ginny home in Wayne, New Jersey. In 173 days I’ve driven about 7,000 miles.

My travel route since November 30, 2009.

In the late afternoon we went out and had some delicious New Jersey Pizza.

I last visited Jim & Ginny in September, 2007.

Finally, some good pizza!

The restaurant does not have a liquor license, so you can bring your own beer. They put it in this iced bucket for us.

As much as I enjoy being on the West Coast…you just cannot get good pizza or seafood. The good seafood awaits us in New England a few days away!

We’ll be here for four days.
