The motorhome is parked at American Legion Post #19 in Yuma, Arizona. I expect to be here for a while.

 

 

Since my RVing life is changing (see above), I’m starting to re-visit previously visited places. So rather than constantly re-blogging past entries, I’ve decided to do something different.

 

 

In 2011-2013, Mary and I did a 682 day, 12,679 miles in the motorhome and 8,000 miles in the Bronco, circumnavigation of the United States, which I called The Great Adventure. I called it so because other than my oldest granddaughter’s high school graduation in June in Connecticut, I didn’t know where we would be going or when we would be there!

 

 

So, unless I do something really different and unusual warranting a new blog entry, I’ll be posting entries from that trip.

Yesterday I drove the Bronco the about one mile to the state capital building also known as The Roundhouse because of its unusual design. It is also an art museum all by its self. I’ve read where it houses more than 600 pieces valued at more than 7 million dollars.

Photography was a bit of a challenge with areas of low light, but the biggest difficulty was that most of the pieces were framed in glass or covered by plexiglass which makes for a lot of light reflection problems.

Yesterday I drove the Bronco the about 15 miles south of Santa Fe to the Bonanza Creek Movie Ranch where dozens of movies have been filmed since 1955  including one of my very favorites…Lonesome Dove. In addition numerous TV shows, commercials, music videos, magazine and catalog photo shoots have been accomplished here.

Bonanza Creek Ranch is a working cattle ranch, visited by appointment only. It is distinctive because unlike on a typical movie set, the buildings here are real structures and not one-sided façades. It is set on 12,000 beautiful acres.

 

 

Our tour guide was Jack Caffery who has worked on this ranch for 33 years. During the 2.5 hour tour he shared lots of stories about the movie stars he has worked with and funny happenings during some of the productions. He has also been in many movies as an extra. If you remember Lonesome Dove, he played Clara Allen’s faithful Mexican worker, Cholo. He is very knowledgeable and personable. I got to ride in his vehicle with him…just he and I…so I got a lot of extra stories. If you are in the Santa Fe area, I highly recommend his tour to you.

Yesterday I drove the Bronco the less than two miles to Canyon Road in Santa Fe. According to their brochure, it’s a half-mile long with more than 100 galleries, artist studios, boutiques and restaurants.

 

 

I soon discovered that I live in another world than these folks. The prices are outrageous…or at least I thought so. I openly confess I do not appreciate “modern art”. When I look at something I cannot figure out what it is or what the artist is trying to convey…it’s hard for me to appreciate it. It must be the ex-engineer in me!  🙂

Most of the galleries I wandered into, I barely got a grunt as a greeting. I think they could detect I wasn’t a buyer.

 

 

However in the gallery I enjoyed the most. Lakind, I got a most enthusiastic greeting by a young gal named Sophie. She explained that they have the most unusual gallery on Canyon Road because they feature paintings by both father and daughter. Here’s their website link…

Today’s extra large photo gallery is for my life-partner Mary, who is not traveling with me at the moment. She is a true art affection-ado and it would have taken us weeks before we left Santa Fe. As for myself, I enjoy art I can understand, so I had an enjoyable time wandering around Canyon Road…understanding what I could. I’ll continue exploring the city today.

The Eagles building is really large and even has showers and a steam room. I enjoyed a really nice shower yesterday afternoon.

I spent a good portion of the afternoon researching things to see here. The Bronco is parked on the other side of the motorhome. I always like to show the view from the dinette window, but since the sun was brightly shining into it yesterday afternoon, I waited until this morning to take the photo…

 

 

I’ll begin exploring the city today.

The motorhome is parked at Thousand Trails Lake Minden RV Resort in Nicolaus, California. I’m scheduled to leave here May 26th.

 

 

Since my RVing life is changing (see above), I’m starting to re-visit previously visited places. So rather than constantly re-blogging past entries, I’ve decided to do something different.

 

 

In 2011-2013, Mary and I did a 682 day, 12,679 miles in the motorhome and 8,000 miles in the Bronco, circumnavigation of the United States, which I called The Great Adventure. I called it so because other than my oldest granddaughter’s high school graduation in June in Connecticut, I didn’t know where we would be going or when we would be there!

 

 

So, unless I do something really different and unusual warranting a new blog entry, I’ll be posting entries from that trip.

Yesterday I visited this museum located about 35 miles north of Truth or Consequences, New Mexico. It presents a very complete story of the Royal Road also known as the King’s Highway that ran from Mexico City to Santa Fe, New Mexico. The photography conditions were terrible. The inside was dimly lit and outside the brilliant sunshine was brutal. Nonetheless…I ventured forth. Here are some of the photos that I took…

In this final photo, the El Camino Real is about eight miles distant. The mountain range on the right is Fra Cristobal. The Rio Grande River passes to the right…right up against the mountain range which made it impassable to early travelers. They were forced to go to the left of the mountain range on the Jornado Del Muerto also known as the Journey of the Dead. Many people died in this 100 mile stretch because there were no dependable water supplies…
