The motorhome is parked at Thousand trails turtle Beach RV Resort in Manteca, California. I’m scheduled to depart here October 7th.

Today… A trip down memory lane!

2004 Central America trip…

This trip ended up being 343 days and 16,000+ miles through the back-country of Mexico, Belize, Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Panama. 11 rigs started the trip, within a week we broke into three smaller groups for ease of traveling. Only myself and one other rig went the full, pre-planned route. All the others dropped out for various reasons. All returned safely to the United States. I’m planning to show these photos, more or less, 10 a day, whenever I’m not doing something else deserving a blog entry. FINALLY, it must be remembered these photos are prior to my switching to digital in 2006. The films were developed during our trip and the lack of quality control sometimes is plainly evident.

Today…Mexico (north-bound) 13…

The motorhome is in Oaxaca, awaiting a new engine. I had no idea that it would take two months. In the meantime we explore Oaxaca, one of the most beautiful cities in Mexico. In our two months there…we got to know it well…

A day trip in the Bronco to the ruins of Yagul, which was a large Zapotec and Mixtec Indian religious center. The large ball court and tombs were very interesting. Atop a hill overlooking the ruins, we enjoyed a beautiful view of the Oaxaca Valley which is 50 miles long…

Today…Nicaragua (north-bound) #1…

After leaving Costa Rica, a few miles up the road we arrived at San Juan del Sur, population about 15,000. It’s a beautiful sand beach/harbor…reputedly one of the prettiest and finest surfing beaches in Central America. We are parked along the malecon (waterfront) overlooking the Pacific Ocean. After our harrowing last three days, we planned to spend several days here…

A peek at the harbor. We spent our happy hours at Ricardo’s Bar…the only place in town to hangout. It’s off-season right now and there are not a lot of people here, but those who are here are from countries all over the world. It’s kind of neat to meet fellow travelers, most of whom were most intrigued by our trip…

The new Centennial Bridge under construction during our visit became the second bridge at the western end of the Panama Canal…

#482 (1)

We took a bus 50 miles to Colon on the eastern end of the Panama Canal. We had heard from many people who told us Colon is a very dangerous city. Since we expected to arrive there in about a week, we decided to check it out and find safe parking in advance of arriving with our RV’s. We located safe parking behind a walled marina with armed guards on the gate for $5 a night. On the way back to Panama City we rode on the Panama Canal Railway…the oldest railway in the Americas. It was built in 1850 to transport the miners heading for the California gold fields…

#484

It follows the original route along the Panama Canal…

#485

The canal needs to be constantly dredged to provide safe passage for the huge ships…

Today the railway is powered by diesel engines. Without this railway, the Panama Canal would never had been built…

What I Look Like During Happy Hour…

Mary is no longer available for RV traveling, but we remain good friends.
Because we have 4,500+ postings, I’ve invited her to continue posting entries on this blog.
I’m currently in my 23rd year of full-time RVing and my lifestyle is changing, For more info click Here

——————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————-

The motorhome is parked at American Legion Post #19 in Yuma, Arizona. I expect to depart here February 28th..

As I’ve indicated several times in the past, my favorite hangout here in Yuma is American Legion Post #19, my current parking location. It’s a really friendly group and I usually end up in there during happy hour 2-3 times a week.
A couple  of days ago, the barmaid Dee was taking photos of customers with her smart phone using an app called Snapchat. The app creates hilarious images which has the entire happy hour crowd howling with laughter. Here’s the reason why…
Are we having fun yet?  🙂
As I’ve aged, I learned a long time ago that laughter is the foundation for good mental health. Especially the ability to laugh at yourself!  🙂

PS: Interesting happening during the night. 11:35 PM, about two minutes after returning to bed from a pee break. 71 degrees, both bedroom windows are wide open. Bamm, bam. Two quite loud (estimate within 1/4 mile) mid-caliber (estimate 32 caliber) gunshots in rapid (less than one second) secession. Sat up for about another five minutes waiting for further activity. Nothing more, no police followup, sirens, etc.. Interesting!

Two years I was an ear-witness to a nighttime drive-by shooting here in Yuma. You can read about that happening by clicking this link…
