The motorhome is parked at Thousand Trails Thunderbird RV Resort in Monroe, Washington. I’ll depart here June 25th.

 

Since my RVing life is changing (see above), I’m starting to re-visit previously visited places. So rather than constantly re-blogging past entries, I’ve decided to do something different.

 

In 2011-2013, Mary and I did a 682 day, 12,679 miles in the motorhome and 8,000 miles in the Bronco, circumnavigation of the United States, which I called The Great Adventure. I called it so because other than my oldest granddaughter’s high school graduation in June in Connecticut, I didn’t know where we would be going or when we would be there!

 

So, unless I do something really different and unusual warranting a new blog entry, I’ll be posting entries from that trip.

Yesterday we drove the motorhome the about 60 miles from Rockport to Port Lavaca, Texas.

 

 

The motorhome is parked at VFW Post #4403. We expect to depart here tomorrow.

 

 

Along the way we took a slight detour to go to the Aransas National Wildlife Refuge…the reputed Winter home of the elusive Whooping Crane. Mary was really excited because she hasn’t seen a Whooping Crane since she was a child. You can read about the Aransas National Wildlife Refuge by clicking their official website link…

But all of Mary’s excitement was for naught…not a Whooping Crane was to be seen.

I’ve been meaning to comment about this topic for some time now…and here’s a good chance to do it. What I consider to be Texas’s excessively high-speed limits. In my humble opinion Texas sets its speed limits anywhere from 10 to 20 miles per hour too high. I recently saw a highway sign that said there were 2,795 road deaths in Texas in 2012.

 

 

 

 

 

The next photo provides a good example. The photo is of County Road 774 on the way to the National Wildlife Refuge. Believe it or not, the speed limit on this narrow two-lane road is 70 miles per hour! In my humble opinion 50 would be the proper speed limit. Safe speed for the motorhome was 45 miles per hour…

 

 

 

 

 

Now that I’ve gotten that off of my chest…here are some of the photos I took at the refuge. No Whooping Cranes…other than the alligator and the cactus, all other photos were taken at the full zoom range of my camera equivalent to 1500 mm. After our visit to Padre Island National Seashore a couple of days ago, the visit here was disappointing. My current travel rig is a 2006 Fleetwood 26′ Class A Motorhome and a towed 1986 Ford Bronco II, Eddie Bauer Model. This photo was taken in the desert at Slab City near Niland, California…
