Day #1 Sunset – Fort Casey State Park – Washington

The motorhome is parked at Thousand Trails Thunderbird RV Resort in Monroe, Washington. I’ve been here many times before. I’ll depart here September 20th.

I’ll be hanging out in this general area until about the beginning of October, taking maximum advantage of my Thousand Trails membership and very agreeable weather.

(Note: I’m currently a little discombobulated right now. My normal mode is to blog what I experienced yesterday. Right now, I’m a number of blogs behind my experiences. I expect to be back in my normal mode in about three weeks.)

Today’s subject…

About one month ago I visited Fort Casey State Park on Whidbey Island for a four-day stay. The first day about an hour before sunset, I went back up the hill to view the sunset. It was a great one!

Here are some of the photos that I took…

Memorial Day Remembered…Five Years Ago

The motorhome is parked at Thousand Trails South Jetty RV Resort in Florence, Oregon. I’ve been here several times before. I plan to depart from here June 5th. I’ll slow my pace and spend the rest of May and most of June along the Oregon coast. Then into the State of Washington for the summer.

Mary is dealing with her over-flowing to-do list plate which can only be handled by herself. I’m hoping she will be able to rejoin me sometime after July 4th.

During yesterday I remembered back to Memorial Day 2010…

Mary and I were in Connecticut visiting my son and his family. At the time my youngest grand-daughter Jaime was 9 years old and in the 4th grade.

She won first prize in her elementary school Veterans Day Essay Contest and got to read this prize-winner before the about 250 people attending the school’s Memorial Day assembly as the local VFW Commander looks over her shoulder…

As always you may left click upon an image to see an enlarged view and then click once again to see an even larger view…

IMG_3134

She was awarded a nice appreciation certificate from the VFW for these words…

Patriotism Today

You have served: you have died, for our country.

Bravery told YOU to go out on those battlefields.

YOU gave us freedom, independence, and history.

YOU sacrificed YOUR life for us.

Saving lives on the battlefields is the most amazing thing to me.

Every time I go to a ball game or at home,

I wear a hat, stand up and put that hat over my heart.

Friends tell me that taking my hat off at home is not important,

but I think it is.

In school, when we say The Pledge of Allegiance,

we celebrate what you have done for us.

“With Liberty and Justice for all”,

I think is the most important part of the pledge,

because you gave it to us.

That is all.

Pretty neat expressions for a nine-year old, fourth-grader. Way to go, Jaime!

If you love your freedom, thank a Veteran!

I HOPE YOU ENJOYED THE PHOTOS.

Yesterday was cloudy/sunny and 63 degrees. Forecast for today is cloudy/sunny and 59 degrees.

Museum Of Monterey, California #1

The motorhome is parked at Thousand Trails RV Resort in Morgan Hill, California.

My eye surgeon at the VA Hospital in Palo Alto, California wants me back for a six-month post-operation examination of my cataract surgery. My appointment is scheduled for April 21st. Palo Alto is only about 40 miles from my current location. I’ll sit here until the 21st when I’ll drive the Bronco to Palo Alto. I expect to arrive at Mary’s home in Murphys, California on either April 22 or 23.

Recently I spent several days in Monterey…an area rich in beautiful scenery and history. A bonanza for a travel blogger! I ended up with 17 blog titles and 628 photos which I’ll present over the roughly next six weeks. This works well for me because I’ll be in an “idle period” during that time. Currently I’m sitting here in Morgan Hill (I’ve been here a number of times in the past) awaiting my VA hospital appointment. Then off to Mary’s home for about four weeks during which time I’ll do routine maintenance, minor repairs and cleaning. On about May 21, Mary and I are planning to head-out for Yellowstone National Park (and other destinations) in Wyoming. Till then, enjoy Monterey!

Today’s subject – Museum Of Monterey…

Located across the plaza from both the Old Custom House and the Pacific House Museum is the Museum of Monterey.

The Museum of Monterey – Stanton Center tells the history of Monterey and the surrounding area through the lens of its connection to the sea. Free to the public, it houses thousands of artifacts. It includes permanent exhibits on the USS Macon disaster off Point Sur, the Ohlone and Rumsien tribes that once lived in the area, the Spanish exploration of the California coast  and the Monterey sardine industry. It is operated by the Monterey History and Art Association.

In the below Google Earth image the Museum Of Monterey is marked by the yellow “x”…

Hotel Del Sol – Yuma, Arizona

The motorhome is t the Paradise Casino in Winterhaven, California. Less than 1/2 mile away is the Colorado River and on the other side…the sunniest place on Earth…Yuma, Arizona. I’m here hanging out and enjoying the nice weather. I have several friends in the area. Mary is currently dealing with some medical issues. Her return-to-me date is now looking like mid-February.

After yesterday’s sun photos, it seemed appropriate to follow today with a post about the Hotel Del Sol (Hotel Of The Sun) in Yuma.

Built in 1927, originally called the Hotel Ming, closed down in the 1970’s, now dilapidated.  In the 1990’s this building was used in the crime chase movie “The Getaway” starring Alec Baldwin and Kim Basinger. It fell into disrepair and has been occupied only by squatters and pigeons…

Evergreen State Fair – Monroe, Washington – Day 2

The motorhome is parked at Thousand Trails Thunderbird RV Resort at Monroe, Washington.. Our scheduled departure date is tomorrow.

Monday Mary and I went to the Evergreen State Fair. It was senior citizen’s day so we had free admission. Fairs offer a host of photographic opportunities regardless of the brilliant sunshine and the darkness inside buildings which adds to the difficulties of getting a good photo. I took so many photos I’m going to stretch them out over three days. Today is day two…
