Vicksburg, Mississippi Day 1 (GA450)

Mary is no longer available for RV traveling, but we remain good friends.
Because we have 5,000+ postings, I’ve invited her to continue posting entries on this blog.
I’m currently in my 23rd year of full-time RVing and my lifestyle is changing, For more info click Here

The motorhome is parked at Thousand Trails RV Resort in La Conner, Washington. I’ll depart here September 10th..

Since my RVing life is changing (see above), I’m starting to re-visit previously visited places. So rather than constantly re-blogging past entries, I’ve decided to do something different.

This entry was posted April 6, 2013…

Note: Mary flew from Baton Rouge Airport, Louisiana on March 12 to her home in California. I’m hoping to get her back with me by mid-April. My current plans are to drift SLOWLY north along the Mississippi River to Memphis, Tennessee where I’ll then turn northeast heading for New England for the Summer. Can’t go north too fast because it’s still cold up there! The Mississippi River is rich in history…I expect it to be an interesting passage. I’m now expecting to arrive in Memphis around April 14th.

————————————————————————————————————–
Yesterday I drove the motorhome the about 35 miles from Grand Gulf to Vicksburg, Mississippi. I’m now parked at the back of Loyal Order of Moose Lodge #1581 with a 30 amp electrical hookup. I expect to be her for a few days.

I spent about three days here in Vicksburg back in 2007, but missed some things which I’ll make up for during this visit.

Here are some of the photos that I took…

Where I also have a peek-a-boo view of a small lake…

After arrival I decided some research time was appropriate. All these places I visit do not happen by accident. So, I spent some time researching what to stop and see here in Vicksburg, what I’ll see between Vicksburg and Memphis, Tennessee and beyond…

While working I got an Email about this video I made a couple of days ago about Arthur Davis, who calls himself the Fried Chicken Cooking King. In this short video he talks about his business and he sings a song about his Grandma…the Corn Bread Cooking Queen…

Jim, You truly did capture Mr. D at his best! He’s a legend around these parts! There are quite a few characters around my hometown of Vicksburg, but none are quite like Mr. D!

Chris Whittington

Seeing the Chris Whittington was from the Vicksburg Daily News, I called him to thank him for his comment. We chatted for a few minutes, then invited me to join him for a beer. I said yes and an hour later he picked me up and took me to his (own words) home away from home. The Klondyke Trading Post. You can read about this place by clicking this link…

In the above photo, my new friend Chris Whittington is on the left. He is both a friendly and inspirational kind of guy. Now 40 years old, he lost his left leg last October to diabetes. Talk about lousy luck! Nonetheless he maintains an upbeat personality. Born in Natchez, being in a military family he has lived in four countries and 16 states. He has lived in Vicksburg since 1997.

He the owner of the Vicksburg Daily News http://vicksburgdailynews.com/, a free daily newspaper supported by advertisers. He is also a commercial videographer making business video commercials and a DJ in a local nightclub. Having only one leg doesn’t slow this guy down.

Mary would have loved this place because they sell about 80 different kinds of beer…She loves the craft beers…you know…the beer that resembles 30 weight motor oil.  🙂

Here’s their top priced beer at $20 a bottle. The brand is Rouge Imperial Pilsner brewed in Newport, Oregon…

After Chris had his Dr. Pepper and I had my Miller Lite, he drove me around telling me of places I might want to see and people I might want to meet while in Vicksburg. He also showed me some of the effects of the 2011 flood when the Mississippi River was 37 feet above flood level.

I enjoyed meeting Chris and some of his friends and expect I’ll be seeing him once again soon.

Enjoying historic places and meeting interesting people is another joy in the life of a full-time RVer!

The day before yesterday, on a cold, windy and rainy day, I drove the Bronco about 50 miles in search of a couple of ghosts from the past. Not without some effort and good luck I found both of them. I reported on the first one, Windsor Ruins, in yesterday’s Blog entry. If you missed that posting, here’s the link…

My second goal, the ghost town of Rodney was really out in the back toolies. You can read all about Rodney by clicking this Wikipedia link…

My only guide was a hand-drawn map that is not to scale and not totally accurate. The red line is supposed to be the Mississippi River. Point #1 my starting Point of Grand Gulf Military State Park and Point #2 is Rodney.

Yesterday, on a cold, windy and rainy day, I drove the Bronco about 50 miles in search of a couple of ghosts from the past.

The first is Windsor Ruins. Set 10 miles from the nearest main road where access is by a narrow, winding and hilly road. It struck me as being remote even by today’s standards. Completed in 1861 it was the largest antebellum Greek Revival Mansion ever built in the State of Mississippi. The mansion burned to the ground by accident in 1890 after being occupied by both Confederate and Union forces and all that remain are 23 columns. All photos and drawings were destroyed in the fire. I urge you to take the time to read its intriguing history by clicking this Wikipedia link…

This is a most unusual place to visit. I was left with a cold and eerie feeling.

Continuing on many miles of back-country sandy/muddy roads without any signs for help, I stumbled upon my second unusual quest. However, today is laundry day for me, so I’m saving that story for tomorrow’s Blog entry.

After finding my second quest, it took me about 10 miles more of those back-country roads to finally reach U.S. Highway 61 and the Old Country Store Restaurant, where owner Arthur Davis claims to make heavenly fried chicken. I just had to stop and find out if it was true.

The building has been there since 1875 and has housed many businesses. It was quite different from what I expected. Here are some photos that I took…

I was not expecting such a large interior and the white cloth tablecloths…

He says…I hope you brought your appetite! The all-you-can-eat lunch buffet is served from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. seven days a week. The buffet includes fried chicken and other meats (sometimes catfish and ribs), tossed salad, cucumber/tomato salad, potato salad, coleslaw, mac & cheese, corn on the cob, green beans, turnip greens, dirty rice, field peas, sweet potatoes, dressing and cornbread for only $10.95

The World’s Six Best Doctors…

Mary is no longer available for RV traveling, but we remain good friends.
Because we have 5,000+ postings, I’ve invited her to continue posting entries on this blog.
I’m currently in my 23rd year of full-time RVing and my lifestyle is changing, For more info click Here

The motorhome is parked at Thousand Trails RV Resort in La Conner, Washington. I’ll depart here September 10th..

A friend sent this to me in an email yesterday and I thought I’d share it with you…

The World’s six best doctors ..worth reading twice
Steve Jobs Died a billionaire at age 56.  This is his final essay:
I reached the pinnacle of success in the business world.  In some others’ eyes, my life is the epitome of success.  However, aside from work, I have little joy.  In the end, my wealth is only a fact of life that I am accustomed to.  At this moment, lying on my bed and recalling my life, I realize that all the recognition and wealth that I took so much pride in have paled and become meaningless in the face of my death.

You can employ someone to drive the car for you, make money for you but you cannot have someone bear your sickness for you.  Material things lost can be found or replaced.  But there is one thing that can never be found when it’s lost – Life.  Whichever stage in life you are in right now, with time, you will face the day when the curtain comes down.

Treasure love for your family, love for your spouse, love for your friends. Treat yourself well and cherish others.  As we grow older, and hopefully wiser, we realize that a $300 or a $30 watch both tell the same time.  You will realize that your true inner happiness does not come from the material things of this world.  Whether you fly first class or economy, if the plane goes down – you go down with it.

Therefore, I hope you realize, when you have mates, buddies and old friends, brothers and sisters, who you chat with, laugh with, talk with, have sing songs with, talk about north-south-east-west or heaven and earth, that is true happiness!  Don’t educate your children to be rich.  Educate them to be happy.  So when they grow up they will know the value of things and not the price.  Eat your food as your medicine, otherwise you have to eat medicine as your food.

The One who loves you will never leave you for another because, even if there are 100 reasons to give up, he or she will find a reason to hold on. There is a big difference between a human being and being human.  Only a few really understand it.  You are loved when you are born.  You will be loved when you die.  In between, you have to manage!

The six best doctors in the world are sunlight, rest, exercise, diet, self-confidence and friends.  Maintain them in all stages and enjoy a healthy life.”

I HOPE YOU ENJOYED THE ESSAY.

Forecast for today is sunny and 68 degrees.

Natchez, Mississippi Day 15 (GA446)

Mary is no longer available for RV traveling, but we remain good friends.
Because we have 5,000+ postings, I’ve invited her to continue posting entries on this blog.
I’m currently in my 23rd year of full-time RVing and my lifestyle is changing, For more info click Here

The motorhome is parked at Thousand Trails RV Resort in La Conner, Washington. I’ll depart here September 10th..

Since my RVing life is changing (see above), I’m starting to re-visit previously visited places. So rather than constantly re-blogging past entries, I’ve decided to do something different.

This entry was posted April 2, 2013…

Note: Mary flew from Baton Rouge Airport, Louisiana on March 12 to her home in California. I’m hoping to get her back with me by mid-April. My current plans are to drift SLOWLY north along the Mississippi River to Memphis, Tennessee where I’ll then turn northeast heading for New England for the Summer. Can’t go north too fast because it’s still cold up there! The Mississippi River is rich in history…I expect it to be an interesting passage.

————————————————————————————————————–

The motorhome is still parked at the Loyal Order of Moose Lodge #1662 in Natchez, Mississippi. Yesterday’s forecasted thunderstorms never did happen. Morning fog hung around until late morning. Nice afternoon. I expect to leave Natchez today.

Natchez remained mostly undamaged from the Civil War. Hence this old city with its narrow and many one-way streets remains a beautiful city. To read about Natchez, click this link…

Yesterday I posted an entry about the only antebellum home in Natchez that allows interior photography. It’s called the Auburn Museum and Antebellum Home…circa 1812. You can read about Auburn Museum and Antebellum Home by clicking their official website link…

Besides allowing photography it is unique because it is the first of the many mansions in the Natchez antebellum period…it also has a freestanding wooden circular staircase…

You saw the above photo in yesterday’s entry. However..you did not see the creative photography of this unique staircase. I love playing with my camera and one of the funnest things to photograph is patterns as shown in the below photos…

Here are some of the photos that I took…

Needing to get out of the motorhome for some fresh air and exercise, I decided to take the five-minute drive back across the Mississippi River to Vidalia, Louisiana and walk along the riverfront. Here I was able to photograph Natchez across the river and both bridges. Because of high noontime harsh sun which makes for flat photographs…I shot them in the watercolor mode which makes for a more enjoyable final result. I hope you enjoy them…

If you are a regular follower of my Blog postings…you know that I tend to avoid places that have a no photography edict. The policy is stupid as well put by my partner Mary which you can read by clicking this link…
http://wp.me/pDCku-7yr

In Natchez there are many antebellum mansions…all of whom have a no photography rule. So instead of patronizing and giving free publicity to those places…I instead visited the only one without a photography ban.

It’s called the Auburn Museum and Antebellum Home…circa 1812.. Besides allowing photography it is unique because it is the first of the many mansions in the Natchez antebellum period…it also has a freestanding wooden circular staircase. You can read about Auburn Museum and Antebellum Home by clicking their official website link…

My thanks to Clark Feiser for making a special trip to open the home exclusively for my photographic purposes and a detailed history of the property. As far as I’m concerned…if you like photographic images of special places you visit…the Auburn Museum and Antebellum Home is the one to choose in Natchez. I’ve been in many old mansions in my years on the road and most have struck me as being cold and sterile. Not so with Auburn…it has a nice comfortable homey feeling.
