Yesterday I drove the motorhome the about 50 miles from Sturbridge to Sudbury, Massachusetts. It is parked at American Legion Post #191. I plan to leave here on Wednesday.

Mary is back at  her home in California tending to some personal business. She has made her plane reservations and will fly to meet me in Boston, Massachusetts on July 30th.

The heat wave is supposed to be over but you cannot prove it by me. Yesterday was 89 degrees in the shade with 50% humidity. It reached 95 degrees inside the motorhome yesterday afternoon.

About one mile to the west is another famous place…Longfellow’s Wayside Inn. The oldest inn in the United States has been in continuous operation since 1716. It started as a two-room house in the early 1700’s. The pub has been in operation for almost 300 years and a 150 yard stretch of the original old Boston Post Road passes by the front step of the inn.

It was here in 1860 that Henry Wadsworth Longfellow wrote a series of poems entitled Tales of a Wayside Inn. Among those poems was…The Midnight Ride of Paul Revere. Here are some of the photos that I took…

My Verizon account recycles on July 5th and I’m closing in on my GB limit so photos will be few until then.

Yesterday I introduced to you the Village of Essex less than five miles from my son’s home.

Here is the official link…
http://essexct.com/

It has another claim to fame…

Essex is one of the few American towns to ever be attacked by a foreign power; this occurred on April 8, 1814, and the economic losses were among the largest sustained by the United States during the War of 1812. Twenty eight vessels, with a total value estimated to be close to $200,000 (at a time when a very large two-story home in Essex would have been worth no more than $1,000), were destroyed by the British. One historian has called it the “Pearl Harbor” of that war.

Chicot State Park, Louisiana Day 2 (GA410)

Mary is no longer available for RV traveling, but we remain good friends.
Because we have 4,000+ postings, I’ve invited her to continue posting entries on this blog.
I’m currently in my 23rd year of full-time RVing and my lifestyle is changing, For more info click Here

The motorhome is parked at Thousand Trails RV Resort in Bow, Washington. I’ll depart here later this morning.

Since my RVing life is changing (see above), I’m starting to re-visit previously visited places. So rather than constantly re-blogging past entries, I’ve decided to do something different.

This entry was posted February 25, 2013…

The motorhome is parked at Chicot State Park near Ville Platte, Louisiana. We are scheduled to depart here on Friday.

Built in 1939, at 6,400 acres with 198 campsites, it’s Louisiana’s largest state park. You can read about Chicot State Park, Louisiana by clicking this Wikipedia link…

The reason we are here is that it’s located along the Zydeco Cajun Prairie Byway which you can read about by clicking this link…

Yesterday, with a weather forecast of severe thunderstorms with hail and a possible tornado, we decided to stay close to the motorhome. We drove the Bronco the about three miles to the arboretum, within the boundaries of the state park. You can read about the arboretum by clicking this link…

The dictionary defines an arboretum as a place where trees, shrubs, and herbaceous plants are cultivated for scientific and educational purposes. Here are some of the photos that I took…

We Visit Dirty Miller in Grand Chenier, Louisiana! (GA402)

Mary is no longer available for RV traveling, but we remain good friends.
Because we have 5,000+ postings, I’ve invited her to continue posting entries on this blog.
I’m currently in my 23rd year of full-time RVing and my lifestyle is changing, For more info click Here

The motorhome is parked at Thousand Trails RV Resort in La Connor, Washington. I’ll depart here July 16th.

Since my RVing life is changing (see above), I’m starting to re-visit previously visited places. So rather than constantly re-blogging past entries, I’ve decided to do something different.

This entry was posted February 18, 2013…

NO INTERNET SIGNAL AT LAST NIGHT’S LOCATION…LATE POSTING THIS MORNING.

Yesterday we drove the motorhome the about 40 miles from Holly Beach to Grand Chenier, Louisiana. The yellow line on the below Google Earth image shows our route…

The day started with a beautiful sunrise over the Gulf of Mexico…

As always you may left click upon an image to see an enlarged view and then click once again to see an even larger view…

The gulf was nearby on our right as we drove east along the shore route…

005

We were also on the Creole Nature Trail…

008a

018

We took the ferry from Holly Beach across the Calcasieu Waterway 1/4 mile to Cameron on the far shore…

009

013

About 25 miles later we came to the Mermentau River Bridge where we stopped to take a few photos…

032

023

038

035

We started along this narrow road following the river shore…

010

About two miles later the road narrowed to a single lane and a sign saying PAVEMENT ENDS. I said to Mary…I don’t think I want to do this. Looking to the left we saw our only escape…a circular driveway…

048

As we made the circle we could hear someone shouting at us. I asked Mary we he said and she replied she did not know. So, I decided to stop…and that’s when we met him…DIRTY MILLER…a crazy, Cajun Coonass…

039

As we approached his shed…he shouted…it’s not done cooking yet! I asked him what was cooking and he replied…Cowboy Stew! With him was his girlfriend Rachael whom he calls Ray-Ray and several other friends. He introduced himself as Dirty Miller. His real name is Pravato Miller. He works for Cameron Parish and has lived there all of his life.

He explained the concrete slab in front of his shed covers the remains of his house which was destroyed by Hurricane Rita in 2005…

046

Next thing we knew he was giving us the grand tour of his utility shed which includes among other things…a refrigerator, cooking stove, washer and dryer, a great sound system and numerous photos…

040

049

He had a little to drink by then and kept repeating…I love life and having fun and I’m one crazy Cajun Coonass! He also told us that he was a guide who has had a number of famous people as clients…including Hank Williams, Jr.

He and the crowd were super friendly and a barrel of laughs. We were fast becoming friends…so much so that Mary shared a tobacco chew with him…

050

All the while the French Cajun Music was blaring away and dancing happened…

058

As time passed it was time for delicious Cowboy Stew and coleslaw…

056

As he was stirring the stew, I asked the ingredients and you can enjoy his Cajun accent by clicking this link…

He’s a gun collector and showed Mary the largest handgun made…a Smith & Wesson 50 caliber…

060

He wanted to show us how loud it was and we were absolutely amazed when he actually hit the beer can…

061

This dog wasn’t impressed…

054

Nor this dog…

063

He offered to show us the scenery along the gravel road that included cattle…

065

And lots of birds and ducks of which Mary took many photos…

069

By now we were fast friends…

047

He invited us to spend the night in his driveway…which we did. Here’s the dinette photo…

001

He and Ray-Ray insisted on cooking us a breakfast…

006

So at 6:00 AM they served us a tasty shrimp, crab and crawfish omelet complete with home-made hot sauce…

007

Here’s the view from Dirty Miller’s shed just before we left this morning…

008

Needless to say we had a ball visiting Dirty Miller and his friends. He really did not want us to leave and he actually had tears in his eyes as we made ready to depart.

A whole bunch of that great Louisiana Cajun hospitality. Thanks y’all for a great visit!
