Cataract Surgery Post-Op & Pre-Op Day

The motorhome is currently parked at Mary’s home in Murphys, California. My current departure date is scheduled December 1st.

Two days ago Mary drove us in her rental car (her Prius is in the body shop being repaired) the 141 miles to the VA Hospital in Palo Alto, California for my cataract surgery post-op and pre-op purposes. We departed at 9:30 AM and after a three-hour drive into the traffic congested area…we arrived safely.

We spent the night at a place called the Defenders Lodge which is made available to vets who live more than 50 miles or a two-hour drive from the hospital. Instead of a horrible drive in morning rush-hour traffic, we arrived fresh for my 9:30 AM appointment.

Dr. Suzann Pershing performed her functions flawlessly…

The first function was a post-op observation of the surgery performed on my right eye on October 9th. She pronounced everything in great condition. I went into surgery with 20/200 vision. After the operation I was 20/50 and yesterday I was 20/25.

The pre-op exam on my left eye now scheduled for surgery on November 6th revealed it is now at 20/100, up from 20/80 only two weeks ago. Time to take the next action soon.

There was no pain associated with the first operation. She offered either both near and distance lens to be installed in my eyes. She said most choose distance…which I did. So, I can clearly see distances and will now be able to drive without glasses. Colors appear much brighter. I will still have to wear reading glasses, but I knew that going into this operation. The only pain (in the butt) associated with the entire process is the amount of eye drops required both prior to and after the operation. In reality a small price to pay to have good vision for another 75 years!  🙂

What’s next? On November 6th we’ll return to Palo Alto for the surgery on my left eye. Once again we’ll spend the night in the Defenders Lodge, have an exam the next morning, then return to Mary’s Home.

Dr. Pershing indicates I should have no problem making my planned December 1st departure before it gets too cold here…providing there are no complications with the next surgery. I’m confident about her abilities and am looking forward to getting back on the road once again.

Online I read that the VA does about 50,000 cataract surgeries a year…about 1,000 a week. Also online I read that about 3,000,000 cataract surgeries are performed in the United States annually. Being an ex-engineer, I broke that down to 60,000 a week and 12,000 a day. Simply amazing!
