Park City, Kentucky Day 4 (GA486)

Mary is no longer available for RV traveling, but we remain good friends.
Because we have 5,000+ postings, I’ve invited her to continue posting entries on this blog.
I’m currently in my 23rd year of full-time RVing and my lifestyle is changing, For more info click Here

The motorhome is parked at Thousand Trails RV Resort in Seaside, Oregon. I’m scheduled to depart October 22nd.

Since my RVing life is changing (see above), I’m starting to re-visit previously visited places. So rather than constantly re-blogging past entries, I’ve decided to do something different.

This entry was posted May 10, 2013…

The motorhome is still parked at the Thousand Trails Diamond Caverns RV Resort at Park City, Kentucky. We expect to leave here later this morning.

The day before yesterday I drove the Bronco the about seven miles to the visitors center at Mammouth Cave National Park. At 400 miles, it is the longest known cave system in the world. What makes it more amazing is that it is all contained in about a seven mile diameter area and only goes down a maximum of 400 feet into the earth.

Because of Mary’s ongoing physical pains and problems we only took the “old folks” tour…1/4 mile in and out. We were in the cave for about 45 minutes. At the end there are 49 steps that go down to the bottom. Mary did not attempt those steps for which I am glad. I managed them okay.

Yesterday I showed you the photos from the visitors center. Today you get to see the actual cave photos…but first a word about the photos. I really dislike flash photography and hence keep the flash feature of my camera shut off. No flash photography for me! Park rules do not allow tripods on tours…so all the photos were taken in a hand-held mode.

The cave was very dark and lit by variously colored spotlights. So the color in any particular photo was directly controlled by the color frequency of the illuminating light. Because of the color of the lights, formations of the rocks and shadows, some of the photos approach an abstract perspective. I hope you enjoy them!

Here are some of the photos that I took…

Now…here’s my problem regarding photos. Since today is laundry day for us…if I show you all of yesterday’s photos today…all you get to see tomorrow are my dirty clothes. So…I’ve decided for today to only show you photos from the great visitors center and show you the actual cave photos tomorrow. I thought that would be your preference… 🙂

Yesterday I drove the motorhome the about 35 miles from Bowling Green to Park City, Kentucky.

Along the way we stopped at the National Corvette Museum. This 115,000 square foot facility is the only museum in the United States devoted to a single model automobile. Corvettes have been made since 1953…so this is the 60th year anniversary. The assembly plant across the way is currently closed to public tours. A 2013 Corvette Convertible has a manufacturer’s starting retail price of $75,925 just in case you were wondering…

It’s located about three miles south of Hodgenville, Kentucky. In the visitors center we viewed a 15 minute film entitled…Abraham Lincoln – The Kentucky Years. The film told the story of how he was born here to upper-middle-class parents, Tom and Nancy. After two years the family moved to the Knob Creek Farm about ten miles northeast of this location. Here are some photos from the visitors center…

There’s a replica of the Lincoln cabin inside this memorial building which we did not go to because of the heavy rain, plus too many steps for Mary’s current physical condition…

Then we drove the motorhome the about three miles to the center of Hodgenville to the Lincoln Museum that depicts the life of Abraham Lincoln…

We then drove the motorhome about six miles to Lincoln’s Knob Creek Farm where he lived from ages 3 through 7. The story told is while living here, he fell into Knob Creek and almost drown. A friend who extended a tree branch to Lincoln saved his life…

After living here, the Lincoln’s moved to Indiana and then Illinois. It was really enjoyable to see and get a better understanding of Lincoln’s boyhood. If it wasn’t for his friend saving his life…we wouldn’t have had him during the Civil War. Lincoln was 56 at the time of his assassination.

We continued on in the motorhome to arrive at Bardstown where we are parked at Moose Lodge #2408…

The rain finally stopped during the night. It’s still a gray and gloomy overcast morning. We will move along later this morning.

Park City, Kentucky – Day 4
