Atop The San Andreas Fault…

Mary is no longer available for RV traveling, but we remain good friends.
Because we have 4,000+ postings, I’ve invited her to continue posting entries on this blog.

The motorhome is parked at Thousand Trails RV Resort…about 20 miles east of Palm Springs, California. I’m scheduled to depart here March 17th.

I first posted this info in December, 2010…

While working on yesterday’s Blog, I noticed that I was quite near the San Andreas Fault. I knew it was in this area somewhere nearby, but didn’t know quite where. In case you are not aware, it is the best known earthquake fault in California.

Well, a little research on the Internet and I found out it’s only a 10 minute drive or 7.5 miles distant. It’s only about 5 miles the way the crow flies..supposedly in a straight line from my current location at Thousand Trails RV Resort. It’s located in the Coachella Valley Preserve which is also a National Wildlife Preserve. It is also known as 1000 Palms Canyon.

In the first photo below, the black line indicates the San Andreas Fault in this area…

This next photo I used Google Earth to give you a different view…

Unfortunately (or better yet, fortunately), there are no gaping openings in the earth. In this photo I’m directly atop the fault looking southeast.

In this photo, I looking northwest…

You can find many websites on the internet by putting San Andreas Fault in the search box.

The following three links provide a lot of information about the fault in this, the Coachella Valley, area…

I hope you enjoyed the photos.

Recently I’ve been running blogs about my 2004 Central America trip. While here I’m intending to continue those postings while also alternating with other past blogs.

I hope you enjoyed the photos.

 Yesterday was mostly sunny and 73 degrees. Forecast for today is mostly sunny and 78 degrees.

Enjoying nice weather is another joy in the life of a full-time RVer!

Ten Years Ago Today…

The motorhome is parked at Thousand Trails Palm Springs RV Resort at Palm Desert, California. Mary remains at home and I expecting her to rejoin me in mid-January.

December 9th, 2004 I crossed back into the United States from my 343 day, 16,000+ mile RV trip through Mexico and Central America. A brief recap…

On January 2, 2004, 17 people and 11 RV’s departed Gila Bend, Arizona and about an hour later crossed into Mexico to begin a trip of a lifetime. In the below photo, I’m in the center wearing a blue vest and white hat…

As always you may left click upon an image to see an enlarged view and then click once again to see an even larger view…

Along the way for whatever reasons, 15 people and 9 RV’s dropped out and returned the United States. The only two people to complete the pre-planned routing were myself and my now good friend, Bud Kuball. In the above photo, he’s forth from the left…

The last day’s entry in my book (in part)) reads as follows…

12/09- (Day 343) At Agua Prieta, Mexico. 6 AM temperature was 52 heated degrees. Bud told me the outside temperature was 36 degrees. On the road at 9:30 AM. We stopped and had both motorhomes and the Bronco hand-washed, for a total of $26. They were really dirty and needed it badly! In the U.S. it costs $35 just for my motorhome alone. We arrived at the border at 11:30. Our 14th border crossing of the trip. We surrendered out travel visas and vehicle permits to the Mexican authorities, and then drove to the American side. After about one-half hour of questions and vehicle inspections we were done and finally, officially, back in the United States. The total trip was 343 days and 11,122 miles on the motorhomes and another 5,000+ miles on the Bronco doing side trips. It certainly was a trip of a lifetime, full of cultural experiences! I still have another four rolls of film to be developed, so I will end up with 1,300+ photos. I knew we would experience a form of culture shock upon returning to the U.S. Some of those experienced on the first day back included:

* The roads are so WIDE!

* The roads are SMOOTH!

* Everything is so CLEAN!

* Everything is so QUIET!

* The drivers are so POLITE!

* All vehicles have mufflers, windows, lights, doors and license plates, and

* THERE ARE SO MANY SIGNS TELLING THINGS YOU ARE NOT ALLOWED TO DO!

In my book, the caption below the last photo of the trip (below)…

#1156 (1)

reads…

“This is the final photograph of the trip. It is ironic we parked beneath a Safeway sign, as we did the trip safely with no major illnesses, incidents, or accidents. Bud and I were the only two to complete the pre-planned route. Thank you Bud, for being a great travel companion!

The below photo ended up as the cover on the book I did not know that I was going to write before departing on the trip…
