Yesterday I drove the motorhome 160 miles from Paicines to Sonora, California.

 

Three years ago I had the Bronco transmission rebuilt here in Sonora. During my recent stay in Paicines, I noticed the transmission was leaking fluid. As my next planned stop was here in Sonora, I elected to bring the Bronco back to the shop that did the rebuild. They told me that the problem was inside the transmission. So, I left the Bronco there and expect to pick it up after repairs are made by early next week.

 

I then went on to Wal-Mart and did some shopping, stocking up on a number of items as it will likely be about a month before I hit my next Wal-Mart.

 

It’s been many years since I’ve spent a night in a Wal-Mart parking lot. I did so strictly because of convenience. The VA Clinic is only about a mile from Wal-Mart.

My annual physical is scheduled April 29th at the VA Clinic here in Sonora. They wanted me to stop in early to provide blood and urine samples which I’ll do later this morning.

 

Once I complete my business at the VA Clinic, I’ll proceed to Mary’s home about 25 miles distant.

The motorhome is parked at Thousand Trails San Benito RV Resort, Paicines, California. I’ll depart from here later this morning.

 

 

Since my RVing life is changing (see above), I’m starting to re-visit previously visited places. So rather than constantly re-blogging past entries, I’ve decided to do something different.

 

 

In 2012-2013, Mary and I did a 682 day, 12,679 miles in the motorhome and 8,000 miles in the Bronco, circumnavigation of the United States, which I called The Great Adventure. I called it so because other than my oldest granddaughter’s high school graduation in June in Connecticut, I didn’t know where we would be going or when we would be there!

 

 

So, unless I do something really different and unusual warranting a new blog entry, I’ll be posting entries from that trip.

Two days ago I received this Email from my friend Randy Vining…

 

 

“Jim:  A legendary guy from my area named Ben Lilly who took Teddy Roosevelt bear hunting—then went west and never came back–rumor had it that he ended up in Silver City, NM where he has a monument or marker dedicated to him.  Let us know if you run across it.”

 

 

Per Randy’s request I looked up Ben Lilly, Silver City, New Mexico on the Internet. Among the websites provided I found this Wikipedia link that tells all about Ben Lilly…

Another website provided was a link about the History of the Memory Lane Cemetery in Silver city, New Mexico…

In part…about half-way into the website…the following information is found…

In this pioneer cemetery lie the remains of early settlers, merchants, miners, politicians, and railroad men who contributed to the development of southwestern New Mexico. Among those buried here are Katherine Antrim (1829-1874), mother of Billy the Kid, and Ben V. Lilly (1856-1937), well-known hunter and guide for Theodore Roosevelt. 

Ben Lilly’s grave may be visited by entering the main gate and going for about 20 yards south on the Avenue of Memories. Rose Lane angles off of this in the southwesterly direction. Go down Rose Lane until the road intersects to the right. Go on down Rose Lane about 30 feet and Ben Lilly’s grave is in the third lot (about 50 feet) to the west in section G, Lot 6, Space 1. His marker is not large and reads as follows:

Dec. 31, 1853, Hazelhurst, Miss.

Dec. 17, 1936, Buckhorn, N.M.

A quick search on Google Earth showed the Memory Lane Cemetery less than one-half mile from my current parking location at the Moose Lodge. Within just a few minutes of walking I was there…

It took me a little while to find the grave location…

The gravestone itself is only about one foot square. Not overly impressive for such a legendary man…

As an interesting aside, Katherine Antrim, the mother of Billy the Kid who lived in Silver City as a very young man, is also buried in this cemetery. Since I did not know the location, I did not seek it out in this rather large cemetery.

Thanks, Randy, for your Email asking about Ben Lilly. Without It I would never had known to look for his memorial.

And yesterday…while exploring the historic downtown of Silver City, New Mexico…it finally happened. My 1986 Ford Bronco II transmission finally quit.

 

 

I bought the vehicle back in July, 2009…almost three years ago.

 

 

It runs as good as it looks. Last August while summering in Washington State, the transmission overheated while climbing Mt. Constitution on San Juan Island in Puget Sound…leaking a steady stream of transmission fluid. Shortly thereafter I had my good friend and trusted mechanic Mike pull the transmission to install new seals and install a rear main engine seal while he was at it. He did not open the transmission case itself during that function.

 

 

Last January the shifting started acting up and I had the modulator valve replaced while in Apache Junction, Arizona. Once again the thought popped into my mind…one of these days the transmission is going to quit.

 

 

No problems since then…until yesterday.

 

 

While climbing a rather short yet rather steep hill…I barely made it to the top. It felt like a slipping clutch. Once at the top…then it did not want to go forward or backward at all. I let it cool down for a few minutes then checked the transmission fluid level…which was fine.

 

 

Since it decided to move once again…I curtailed my exploration activities and managed to get it back to the Moose Lodge where the motorhome is parked about three miles distant. Once there…it once again refused to go forward or backwards. What to do now?

 

 

I placed a call to Mike in Washington to get his diagnosis of my problem. It did not come as a surprise. He concluded that the time had come to have the transmission rebuilt. The next question became by whom and where…it’s a Friday afternoon.

 

 

I went into the Moose Lodge where the head guy provided me with a local referral. There’s only three places that do transmission rebuilds in this small town of about 10,000 population. The other potential solution was to hook the Bronco II to the motorhome and tow it to the nearest national franchise transmission rebuilders in Las Cruces, New Mexico…125 miles distant. In another call to Mike…I asked him about his opinion on this option and he said…”I wouldn’t let them work on my lawnmower!”

 

 

So the decision was made. I managed to drive it to the local transmission rebuild shop about two miles away. I’m hoping to get the Bronco II back by next Friday at a cost not to exceed $2,000. Transmission rebuilds are expensive!

 

 

Now for the good news. I could have broken down out in the middle of the toolies where I frequently go. Then I would have had to deal with a tow truck to get me back to civilization. The motorhome is parked at a very friendly Moose Lodge where the head guy says…”No problem…stay as long as you need to!” The Ford Bronco II’s of the 1980’s have a bad reputation for transmission problems. I guess I can’t complain about a transmission rebuild with 150,000 miles on the odometer. A little time and a few $’s and hopefully all will be well once again with my 1986 Ford Bronco II.

Yesterday I drove the motorhome the about 30 miles from City of Rocks State Park to Silver City, New Mexico which is at 5,900 ft of elevation. The Continental Divide is just west of town. The population is about 10,000 people.

 

 

I’m parked at Moose Lodge #1718 where I have an electrical hookup…

Yesterday I drove the motorhome the about 40 miles from Rockhound State Park to City of Rocks State Park at Faywood, New Mexico.

Born some 33 million years ago from a volcanic eruption 1,000 times greater than Mt. St. Helen’s, mother nature has slowly chiseled her into to the rock “city” you see today. The park encompasses one-square-mile area in the scenic Chihuahuan desert region of southeastern New Mexico at the elevation of 5,200 feet. The “city” is a truly geologic monument formed by large sculptured rock columns, or pinnacles, rising as high as 40 feet and separated by paths or lanes resembling city streets.

I took this photo through the windshield of the motorhome about one hour after sunset…

 

 

I got up to pee about 2:00 AM…peeked out of the dinette window where I saw about one bazillion stars. What there is to see once you get away from city lights!

 

 

Though it’s very pretty and quiet here…once you’ve explored the rocks there’s little else to do since the park is located about 25 miles equi-distant between the cities of Deming and Silver City. So today I’ll move on up to Silver City to begin a visit which I’m expecting will last a few days.

The motorhome is parked at Thousand Trails San Benito RV Resort, Paicines, California. I’ll depart from here April 19th.

 

 

Since my RVing life is changing (see above), I’m starting to re-visit previously visited places. So rather than constantly re-blogging past entries, I’ve decided to do something different.

 

 

In 2012-2013, Mary and I did a 682 day, 12,679 miles in the motorhome and 8,000 miles in the Bronco, circumnavigation of the United States, which I called The Great Adventure. I called it so because other than my oldest granddaughter’s high school graduation in June in Connecticut, I didn’t know where we would be going or when we would be there!

 

 

So, unless I do something really different and unusual warranting a new blog entry, I’ll be posting entries from that trip.

I’ve been here for ten nights and the high winds and colder temperatures are finally gone and it’s time for me to roll along. I thought I’d share with you a final look of this nice state park…

Last Sunday we had sustained 45-50 mile per hour winds…with frequent gusts to 70+ miles per hour. To show the effects of that wind…compare the next two photos which are or less the same photos. This first on was taken on March 12th…with no wind…

 

 

 

 

 

 

And next on Sunday March 18th with winds gusting to 70+ miles per hour.  On the valley floor its blowing sand…up higher the resulting dust obscures the background mountains so that they are barely seen…

The desert is such an awesome place. It’s been a very enjoyable stay at this scenic New Mexico State Park.

 

 

Today’s destination is City of Rocks State Park.
