DON’T MESS WITH NEBRASKANS

Farmers and ranchers in Nebraska built a sustainable, green-tech embracing barn right in the proposed path of the Keystone XL pipeline, symbolically blocking its progress while, at the same time, nicely highlighting why it simply isn’t needed.

These aren’t tree hugging hippies, these are landed ranchers and farmers who state in a video called “The Barn”  “TransCanada isn’t asking to do business with us. They tried to bully us,” the voice states.  “They told us it was a done deal, but they didn’t know much about Nebraskans.”

I’m headed to the Chiropractor this morning, early, and have shamelessly let Gas.2.0. write my blog for me this morning. I couldn’t find the video address to post. But, one final statement from the post. They know that it is oil not ethanol raising food prices, they know tar sands destroys land, and pipelines destroy towns. They can’t be bought.

My own thoughts on this event is that as the Federal Government fails us, states and people have to more and more take things into their own hands. Shame on you Obama if you allow this project to go through.

Stanley, North Dakota

Yesterday I drove the motorhome the 101 miles from Towner to Stanley, North Dakota.

We continued traveling along U.S.Highway 2 West.

Along the way we passed through Minot, for which we could not find a good reason to stop. These many last days of basically traffic-less driving on Highway 2 has come to an end. Once we left Minot, the traffic picked up noticeably as we are entering North Dakota’s oil boom area. This was one of the few times we were not accompanied by a number of trucks…

Arriving in Stanley, Mary and I took a walk down Main Street to find something we had not seen before. On every street light pole was a large speaker playing rock music! Mary and I both found it most irritating…

We were in search of Stanley’s claim to fame. The only remaining original operating Whirl-A-Whip ice cream machine left in the country located in the Dakota Drug Store which still has the soda fountain…

Terry, the owner, showed us the machine…only it is no longer functioning. The motor had burned out…

He told us the newer model is the same internal machine, but now covered in a stainless steel case…

What’s so special about this machine? Well, other places may advertise 100 different flavors and have to keep them in stock. With this machine, by having only three flavors in stock and then adding unique ingredients, you can create hundreds of flavors. So, of course we just had to try it. Here’s the menu of flavors…

I had the chocolate ice cream and added Oreo cookie, whopper (a malt ball) and bit o’ brickle (a crunchy granola-like substance) which cost $4.00.. Here’s what it looked like before the machine processed it…

And here’s what it looked like after the machine processed it. Kind of like a flavored softee ice cream. It was tasty!…

Terry, the owner, contacted Bruce Rohtenheiser and told him we were interested in the history of the machine. Bruce, together with his son owned the drugstore for more than 50 years. Bruce, who is a lively 83 years old and once served as the mayor of the town, filled us in on the history of the machine. Here he wears a T-shirt identifying North Dakota’s two most valuable commodities…grain and oil…

The drug store even has Whirl-A-Whip T-shirts for only $13.75. We did not buy one…

The once free municipal campground is no longer free and full of oil boom workers. Bruce put me in contact with Harry Braddock, a past Commander of the local American Legion which no longer owns a building in town. Harry was kind enough to offer to let us park across the street from his home…

Yesterday was a lousy weather day. 96 degrees with high humidity. Today’s forecast is for 94 degrees. Tomorrow is forecast 89 degrees. YUKKITTY!

We’ll continue our westward travel later this morning.

Port Arthur, Texas – Day 4

The motorhome is parked at American Legion Post #7 in Port Arthur, Texas. We expect to depart tomorrow.

Note: Our Internet account starts a new cycle tomorrow, We are currently approaching our maximum allowable usage. Consequently we’ll be on a “photo diet”…posting fewer pictures than usual until then.

Yesterday we drove the about 12 miles to the Spindletop Museum. This is the location of the first oil gusher in Texas which on January 10, 1901 led to the beginning to such companies as Gulf, Texaco, Exxon, Mobil ans Sunoco. Here’s the museum’s official website link…

Port Arthur, Texas – Day 3

Yesterday we drove the Bronco the about four miles to the Museum of the Gulf Coast where we spent an enjoyable two hours. It was a much larger and nicer museum than I expected for a city with a population of only 53,000. As mentioned yesterday, Janis Joplin is the city’s most famous ex-citizen. The museum highlights many other famous area musicians, sports and political people. Here’s the official museum website link…

A visit with Mr. Charlie in Morgan City, Louisiana

Jim says: So, who’s Mr. Charlie?…you ask. Well, he’s an Authentic Offshore Drilling Rig! From 1954 to 1986 “Mr. Charlie” drilled hundreds of offshore wells off the coast of Morgan City, Louisiana in the Gulf of Mexico. He was the first transportable, submersible drilling rig and an industry springboard to the current offshore rig technology. Today he serves as a museum and also as a school for beginning oil rig workers.

Yesterday Mary and I drove the about 30 miles to Morgan City, Louisiana specifically so we cold visit Mr. Charlie. We had a most enjoyable one hour tour given by the International Petroleum Museum & Exposition President, Virgil Allen. He really knows his business and provided us with a great education about off-shore drilling and the oil industry in general.
