Yesterday I drove the motorhome the 22 miles from Ocean City to Aberdeen, Washington.

 

A local told me that during World War II, only two places were off-limits to military personnel, San Francisco, California and Aberdeen, Washington.

Aberdeen is located at the eastern end of Grays Harbor as seen in the below Google earth image. The V marks the VFW…my current location.

Upon arrival, I parked the motorhome behind VFW Post #224…

Here’s the usual dinette window photo….

I visited Aberdeen last week, stopped by the VFW and got recruited to march in the Founders’ Day Parade. Here’s the parade poster…

At 8:30 Am, I went inside the VFW post and had breakfast. At number of the other volunteer marchers were doing the same. 48 Killed In Action (KIA) banners had been removed from the wall so they could be carried in the parade…

Since I was a stranger in town, Jim Daley, a 10 year past commander of the post and a 22 year U.S. Marine Veteran drove me over to the parade beginning location…

Finally other VFW folks started arriving. The posters were passed around. This is the one I carried…

The is Jim Daley’s car which was in the parade. Jim stand by the driver’s door…

A number of young folks carried banners…

A few more minutes to go…

A future Marine carried a banner…

Gold Star Mothers Shelly and Sally (and others) carried banners of their KIA sons…

The parade was led by the Police Swatmobile donated to the city as Army surplus…

Just about ready to start. The banner carriers were at the head of the parade directly behind the Honor Guard…

Here we go…

The parade was about 3/4 mile long. The people clapped, cheered and yelled “Thank You”. At mid-point we stopped at the reviewing stand where a lady announced about the KIA banners. Taps was played on a bugle and I found myself close to tears…

At the end of the parade the banners were collected…

Lots more parade to come, but by that time I had to pee so bad I beat feet back to the VFW Post…

I thank the friendly folks from VFW Post #224 for inviting me to join their parade. It was the first parade I had ever had the opportunity to march in and found it to be a very satisfying and emotional experience. I’m planning to depart Aberdeen next Wednesday.

A few days ago I was out and about. While slowly driving the Bronco, out of the corner of my eye I caught a movement. Stopping, about 200 feet away, I could see the Hawk which had just landed in a tree.

 

This is likely the best Hawk photo I’ve taken in my 42 years of photography. Unless you a sitting in a blind with a long-range lens, wildlife photography is essentially being lucky enough to be in the right spot at the right time! This time I was…

Last Saturday a sand castle competition was held on the beach at Ocean Shores. The weather was perfect. Brilliant sunshine, 75 degrees with a brisk breeze coming off of the ocean.

The motorhome is parked at Thousand Trails Oceana RV Resort in Ocean City, Washington. I’ll be here until July 2nd.

Last Saturday a chain saw competition was held in the parking lot of the Convention Center at Ocean Shores.

There were also dozens of arts/crafts vendors on the parking lot and filling the interior of the Convention Center.

It was a difficult photo situation with brilliant sunshine and cluttered backgrounds.

Two days ago I drove the Bronco about 20 miles north of my current location to Taholah, Washington, the capital of the Quinault Indian Nation.

Located at the end of Washington Highway 109 it’s quite remote on the coast…not an easy place to get to…

The first indication that I had crossed on to the reservation was this sign…

Where I had stopped at a bridge to take the next two photos…

A few miles later I was in Taholah. With a population of only about 800, there is little to see and do. Here’s a small Veterans Park…

And a small Memorial Park…

Here’s the center of town…

The small museum was closed….

My visit there was short. Because the population is so small and everyone must know everyone, I stuck out like a sore thumb. The people just stared at me like I was an alien and no one spoke to me. I gave me an eerie feeling…not very welcoming. Because it is somewhat remote, I suppose they see few tourists. In all my travels it was a most unusual feeling!
