Today… A trip down memory lane!

 

 

 

2004 Central America trip…

This trip ended up being 343 days and 16,000+ miles through the back-country of Mexico, Belize, Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Panama. 11 rigs started the trip, within a week we broke into three smaller groups for ease of traveling. Only myself and one other rig went the full, pre-planned route. All the others dropped out for various reasons. All returned safely to the United States. I’m planning to show these photos, more or less, 10 a day, whenever I’m not doing something else deserving a blog entry. FINALLY, it must be remembered these photos are prior to my switching to digital in 2006. The films were developed during our trip and the lack of quality control sometimes is plainly evident.

2004 Central America trip…

This trip ended up being 343 days and 16,000+ miles through the back-country of Mexico, Belize, Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Panama. 11 rigs started the trip, within a week we broke into three smaller groups for ease of traveling. Only myself and one other rig went the full, pre-planned route. All the others dropped out for various reasons. All returned safely to the United States. I’m planning to show these photos, more or less, 10 a day, whenever I’m not doing something else deserving a blog entry. FINALLY, it must be remembered these photos are prior to my switching to digital in 2006. The films were developed during our trip and the lack of quality control sometimes is plainly evident.

Another day trip…first stop is an old fort overlooking Masaya known as Coyopete. Originally built to protect the city from warring political factions, it became a prison and torture chamber for the dictator Samoza, and later the same for the Sandinistas. In 1983 it became a Boy Scout camp…

 

 

This is the way in…

 

 

The only outside air passage. A most interesting place to visit…

 

 

Then on to the Masaya National Volcano Park, where we spent a couple of hours at the large visitors center and then at the active steaming volcano which last erupted in 1772. The large globe offers me an opportunity to show you the “Big Picture” of our trip. #1 marks Gila Bend, Arizona, our starting point, and #2 our furthest southern most point of the trip at Puertobello, Panama, about 5,000 miles as the crow flies (supposedly in a straight line 🙂 ) We drove a total of 6,644 miles to get from point #1 to point #2 in 173 days…

I’m standing at the edge of a live volcano. If this were the United States, we wouldn’t be allowed within 50 miles of such a place…

 

 

As seen from a nearby rise. As a comical aside, my Bronco (furthest vehicle) was required to face the exit in case of an eruption and we had to run for our lives…

 

 

The roadway to the top of the hill was closed and we were not allowed to go up there. In the pre-Columbian age, the Indigenous people believed the eruptions to be a sign of anger from the gods, and to appease them, they offered human sacrifices which included small children and women. They were “offered” from the peak with the cross…

 

 

During the conquest, The Spaniards baptized the active volcano as…

 

 

La Boca del Inferno…the Mouth of Hell because they truly believed that this was the entrance to hell. Needless to say we found this to be one of the most interesting places to visit of our entire trip…

Today we took a day trip with the Bronco up into the mountains to escape the constant heat.  First stop was at the Village of San Juan de Oriente where 80% of the people living here make beautiful pottery…

Then to the top of the mountain to El Mirador, where there is an outstanding overlook point…

 

 

The wide view of Apoyo Lagoon in the crater of an old volcano was so large that I had to take two photos and tape them together. In the background, Granada is along the shore of Lake Nicaragua with the Island of Ometepe in the far distance. We’ll visit Ometepe soon…

Today…Nicaragua (south-bound) #1…

I sit in the driver’s seat of my motorhome, preparing to enter Nicaragua. This border crossing was located at the apex of a 4,000 foot mountain. It was very steep with lots of 18-wheelers and just finding a place to park while we accomplish our paperwork proved to be quite a chore. We have learned to put aside basically a whole day just to get through the border-crossing process…

 

 

We are now down to the 2,500 foot level in the City of Esteli, Nicaragua with a population of about 73,000. Esteli was one of the more active locations during the revolution where most of the heros and martyrs were 17, 18, and 19 year olds. The Museum of Heros and Martyrs depicts the revolution of the Sandinistas against President Somoza in 1979. The old lady docent showed us the pictures of her three sons that were killed in the fighting. It was hard for me to believe that this had happened only 25 years prior to our visit. There are numerous places in the city where you can see scars of bullet hits on the buildings…

Young women also participated in the revolution…

 

 

We are now in the beautiful colonial City of Granada, Nicaragua. It’s at the 180 foot elevation with a population of about 110,000  and we are parked along the shore of Lake Nicaragua which is about 100 miles long and 35 miles wide. This gal owned the restaurant where we ate a number of our meals during our six-day visit here…

 

 

Marimba music is very popular in Central America…

The motorhome is parked at Shady Acres Mobile Home and RV Park in Yuma, Arizona. I expect to be here a while hiding out from the cold, wet weather. Average temperatures in January are high 69.6, low 47.6. In February, high 73.8, low 50.1. As nice as Yuma is, I wouldn’t want to be here in August.  🙂

Today…Nicaragua (north-bound) #5…

We are still in Chinandega, Nicaragua.

Onel invited Bud and I to go visit his family, who live in the mountains 85 miles away. It took three hours to get there and the last 2.5 miles were really rugged, taking 1/2 hour in 4-wheel drive. The road (?) was very very, steep steep, narrow narrow, rocky rocky, bumpy bumpy. Get the picture?…

 

 

Onel’s mother, is named Olympia. His grandfather is named Pedro and has been married for 75 years. Onel’s grandmother is 94, blind, and pretty much confined to bed. His grandfather had lived in the same house for 80 years…

 

 

Pedro was 95 and spry with a twinkle in his eye. He stayed alert by constantly listening to the news on the radio and was up-to-date on everything going on in the world…

Which is in the small town of Cincos Pinos ( Five Pines) on the border of Honduras…

 

 

Only four months earlier had they finally gotten electricity and a telephone…

 

 

This is the cooking stove. You simply put a couple of old car springs over the opening upon which you can set the pots and pans…

It’s very pretty here and reminded me of Northern California…

 

 

On the way out-of-town we passed Onel’s birthplace house…

 

 

After ten enjoyable days in Chinandega, we moved on to the town of Estelli, with a population of about 73,000 and 2,500 foot elevation. While there I met Zoyla Xiomara Chavarria Zapata…

 

 

Zoyla was 37 years old and works as a candy maker in her mother’s bakery business. She has two children, Jose 5 and Carmen, 3. She separated from her husband three years earlier because he used to beat her. She lived in her mother’s house…

Only myself and one other rig went the full, pre-planned route. All the others dropped out for various reasons. All returned safely to the United States. I’m planning to show these photos, more or less, 10 a day, whenever I’m not doing something else deserving a blog entry. FINALLY, it must be remembered these photos are prior to my switching to digital in 2006. The films were developed during our trip and the lack of quality control sometimes is plainly evident.

Today…Nicaragua (north-bound) #4…

We are still in Chinandega, Nicaragua.

By chance I met Onel Lenz, a 29 year-old guy who owns a local construction company. He introduced me to his gringo friend, Joe, a 68 year-old guy from California who also lives here. Joe came here seven years ago, fell in love with Nicaragua and never left.

Joe took me to his ocean-front lot about ten miles out of town. The roads were so bad it took us an hour to get there. The next three photos shows his ocean view right to left…

 

 

It’s a two-acre lot…

 

 

With about 300 feet of ocean front…

 

 

Where he is having built, a 1,400 square foot house…

 

 

And when finished, lot and house together will only come to…

 

 

$35,000 in United States money…

 

 

On the left is Joe’s girlfriend, Ereseli who is only 20 years old. On the right is Jasmin, her 19 year-old girlfriend…

 

 

Joe and Ereseli are trying to fix me up with Jasmin! Joe invited me to move my motorhome out to his ocean property and “stay in paradise”, living with Jasmin, for free, for the rest of my life! It sounded so inviting, but the problem was that I would get bored staying in one place after a couple of months, no matter how beautiful and wonderful it was…so I passed on his invitation…

 

 

Jasmin with three of her five siblings. They lived in a three-sided, palm-thatched palapa, with no electricity or indoor plumbing. Despite that every thing is amazingly clean…including the children. Jasmin was studying to be a nurse. Her mother was about 40, but was ashamed of her appearance and elected not to be in the photo. Like many families in Nicaragua, Jasmin’s father had deserted the family a while back. How her mother managed economically, I couldn’t comprehend…
