Flashback In Time To East Kingston, New Hampshire

Mary is no longer available for RV traveling, but we remain good friends.
Because we have 4,000+ postings, I’ve invited her to continue posting entries on this blog.
I’m currently in my 21st year of full-time RVing and my lifestyle is changing, For more info click Here

——————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————–

The motorhome is parked at Thousand Trails RV Resort in La Connor, Washington. I’ll depart here August 30th. I’ve been here a number of times in past years.

I’ll be hanging out in this general area until about the beginning of October, taking maximum advantage of my Thousand Trails membership and very agreeable weather.

This area of Washington has always been one of my very favorite locations in all of the United States. The scenery is absolutely beautiful, the air is fresh and clean, it seldom gets too hot or cold, there are virtually no bugs or mosquitos and the people are very friendly. I’ve been coming here for years and know the area very well. It’s my very favorite place to go to during the Summer…that’s why I keep returning.

Today’s subject…

Flashback to East Kingston, New Hampshire…

I seldom dream. If I do, they are generally “wierd” or really good movie-like which I wish I could remember sufficiently so I could write a screen play and get really rich.  🙂

Last night was different. I dreampt about a place in lived in more than 50 years ago. 1964 in East Kingston, New Hampshire, where my son Jim was born 52 years ago.

Anyways, the reason I’m writing about this today is that it’s the first time I can remember dreaming that can be supported by photos that I’ve taken. These photos were taken during my first circumnavigation of the United States in 1996-1997.

The below Google earth image shows downtown East Kingston as seen in 2016 with a population of about 2,300. Back in 1965, it was more likely around 500. It’s located in the SouthEast corner of New Hampshire. #1 is the General Store and #2, the railroad depot…

This is the house we lived in. I don’t remember it being this nice 30 years earlier. Directly to the left of the house was a huge strawberry patch. We used to sell them on a roadside table for $0.50 a quart…

I lived in this house in East Kingston, NH from 1962 to 1964.

It got really cold in the winter. I remember a New Year’s Evening visiting friends and the radio said it was -28 degrees. I had a Volkswagen back in those days and there was no garage. I used to have to take the battery out of the car and put in next to the stove for the night. Then I had an electrical oil stick to keep the oil warm and then covered the engine with a blanket…

The General Store was about one mile down the road. I’m remembering only one gas pump back then…

Ivoryton, Connecticut – Day 30

The motorhome is parked at my son’s home where I’m expected to remain until July 17th visiting with my family.

Mary is back at  her home in California tending to some personal business. She has a tentative return-to-me-date of July 16th.

In recent days, I have introduced to you the Village of Essex less than five miles from my son’s home.

In those entries I’ve started showing images taken at the Connecticut River Museum located in Essex. In the next few Blog entries I’ll share more photos with you.

At 407 miles, it’s the longest river in New England. Starting at the New Hampshire/Canada border it flows into Long Island Sound. You can read all about the Connecticut River by clicking this Wikipedia link…

Ivoryton, Connecticut – Day 29

The motorhome is parked at my son’s home where I’m expected to remain until July 17th visiting with my family.

Mary is back at  her home in California readying for a family reunion. She has a tentative return-to-me-date of July 16th.

Today I want to discuss the Connecticut River itself…

Even though it is not racing season, there are still horses here which we got to see yesterday morning. I took so many photos that I’ve decided to show the photos taken in the stable area today. Race track photos can be seen tomorrow.

Another Fun Day With Old Friends In Southeastern New Hampshire

Jim says:

Yesterday was a delightful weather day! Instead of the oppressive heat and humidity we’ve experienced in a number of past days, the high temperature was only 83 degrees with only 41% humidity! For a change, the weather wimp (that’s me) was a happy camper!

Four days ago I reported the gathering of old friends at Revere, Massachusetts. Yesterday the same group got together in Southeastern New Hampshire. At out current parking location at American Legion Post #105 at Kensington, New Hampshire we are only (not by accident) about eight miles from the home of Bill and Loretta Gallagher in Hampton, New Hampshire. We arrived there at 10:00 AM.

Upon our arrival Bill showed me the only known shirt remaining in existence from our Road Sharks Car Club of Revere, Massachusetts from more than 50 years ago!

Picture
Bill Gallagher with the only known remaining shirt from the Road Sharks Car Club.

Bill, Loretta, Mary and I got in their SUV and they showed the sights us along Hampton Beach for an hour.

Picture

Back at the house, Arthur and Dolly arrived at 11:00 AM where we sat for two more hours reliving the good old days. Dolly has lived on the same street in Revere, Massachusetts all of her life and was the Assistant City Clerk for 36 years. She forgets nothing and astounded us with stories about what’s happened to old school friends.

Picture
The first two hours we spent reliving the good old days.

All six of us in the SUV with Bill acting as tour guide. He returned to the coast and drove North, the 10+ miles with beautiful homes, to Portsmouth, New Hampshire which is one of the oldest cities in New England. We parked the SUV and spent an hour wandering around Old Market Square enjoying the unique sights and shops.

Picture
Accidentally came across this mural of Old Market Square, Portsmouth, New Hampshire.

Here’s a Wikipedia informational link about Portsmouth, New Hampshire…
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portsmouth,_New_Hampshire

Back in the SUV once again, we headed South to the Old Salt Restaurant where we enjoyed a nice meal.

Picture
The oldies enjoy a meal at The Old Salt Restaurant.

A delightful 7.5 hour day! Normally I get to enjoy only one day with old friends as I pass through a given area. This second day of old friendships was a nice bonus. While Mary was not part of the group many years ago, as normal she fits right in within a few minutes!

Today is a travel day as we move the motorhome and Bronco South about 40 miles to Manchester on the Northeastern Massachusetts seacoast.
