Yesterday I drove the motorhome 177 miles from Gold Hill, Oregon to Anderson, California. I’ll depart here later this morning.

MISTY MORNINGS AND A MUSTANG.

A wild mustang occupies the other side of the fence from my front yard in Oregon, where my son built me a house.

I was lucky to find Susan Scott to work with me, painting and cleaning out my storage building. She also hand-picked designated  weeds for me, since I don’t spray anything poisonous on my property. She was helping me get a picture of this wild horse, who won’t hold still for a picture.

She dropped the carrot, but I caught the tattoo on the horse’s neck from the BLM round-up and sale. She is temporarily pastured here to munch down the weeds and she is doing a good job. Why I didn’t take time to shoot the work we did? My brain doesn’t always function on all four cylinders.

Saturday morning turned out to be cool and I started for home late, after 8 a.m. and dawdled, enjoying the beautiful mists that drape the mountain sides surrounding Evans Valley.

My neighbors get mists like these since they live on the river side of the road.

Beauty that burns off within a couple of hours.

About the time I snapped this photo, the weather report warned of snow over the pass and I had to quit dawdling and press the metal.

Then I had to stop again for this photo. I’ve never seen Mt. Shasta surrounded by a ring of clouds.

Glimpses of Shasta poke through periodically as you drive. The best view is from Weed Airport, on the opposite side of the freeway.

The mist lifted as I got within range. Even from the wrong side of the freeway, with the light shining on my camera’s viewing screen, I took the picture out the window-blind. She is a stunning piece of nature and I have better pictures of her than this. I have to return in a couple, maybe three weeks, to finish the storage building. I need the sheet rock taped and textured and painted before the electric fixtures are installed. I finished the inside because it was so hot in the afternoons and freezing in the mornings. It stored things, but no one could work inside of it. When finished, my building will have a place to rinse brushes and plug-in and use power tools.

The Evans Valley is turning into a very popular place for permanent residences and I keep meeting new neighbors every trip I take. Like Susan.  I also brought home with me a new boyfriend. More, tomorrow.

Yesterday I drove the motorhome 175 miles from Gold Hill, Oregon to Anderson, California.

All but one mile of the entire trip was on Interstate Highway 5.

 

Along the way, I traveled over Siskiyou Pass in Oregon and passed alongside of Mt. Shasta in California..

Yesterday I drove the motorhome 313 miles from Nicolaus, California to Wimer, Oregon.

I’m now at Mary’s other (new) home were construction is nearly finished. I expect to be here one week and depart on March 17th.

 

 

Note: Due to a very low Internet signal here (one bar 1X), I’m having real difficulty loading photos…so you only get two today…the header of Mt. Shasta and Mary’s seven grassy acres below. She has a worker arriving tomorrow to cut the grass. Unless I find a way to improve my Internet signal, I may not blog again until I reach my next destination of Florence, Oregon on May 17th.

 

Mary has several neighbors watching over her property when she is not here.

VFW Post #9650 – Anderson, California

Yesterday I drove the 123 miles from Nicolaus to Anderson, California.

Change of plans…

2015 is proving to be an overwhelming year for Mary. Her to-do plate is overflowing. Among the many things requiring her time is the completion of construction of a rental property in Rogue River, Oregon. Mary will be driving there today for a few days of hands-on involvement, then return home to continue dealing with her over-flowing plate.

Mary’s stuff can only be attended to by herself…she’s always telling me she can not get anything done when I’m around. 🙂

So, I’ll depart from here with the motorhome and Bronco later this morning and arrive at Rogue River this afternoon for a four-day stay after which I’ll head for the Oregon Pacific Coast for about a six-week visit and then into the State of Washington for the summer. My primary goals are to stay in 65-75 degree weather and take maximum advantage of my Thousand Trails membership.

We are now hoping for Mary to rejoin me sometime after July 4th. Our planned trip to Yellowstone National Park and Wyoming will hopefully now occur after the Labor Day holiday.

Most of yesterday’s travel was on U.S. Highway 99 which passes through miles of fruit orchards…much better than the alternate of Interstate Highway 5…

Along the way I stopped at a couple of GoodWill stores to buy some used books to add to my waiting-to-be read collection.

Approaching Anderson I spotted Mount Shasta 65 miles away. I grabbed my camera and manged to get this neat shot even though I was driving…

MEET THE DRAGON AND AN UPDATE.

My son is an excellent builder with vast experience, so it was a natural to have him build my house in Oregon. We got a late start in September with hold-ups from the building department, including mis-filed paperwork, lost paperwork, demands for tests that were not required-not exactly an efficient system. The delays put us in the rainy season.  And, now that the building is in progress, the rain makes things difficult and slows down everything. There are days when I’m hanging on-line or hanging next to the phone. Our roofer, expected to arrive yesterday, had to bail. Hours of phone calls, I got another roofer and it will be finished today, one of two clear days.The plumber comes in on the 20th.

So, I’m still necessarily absent from this blog a lot, but here is a progress report:

The foundation was set in late September.

The West end of the building. It is under 1,000 square feet. But the gutters are on, the rooftop is up, papered and ready for shingles.

The East end of the building. It was necessary to design a small building, long and narrow, in the same shape as the mobile that was destroyed by an inside flood. We learned the cause during the take down. A tenant had hot wired the electrical and when he left, a pipe inside froze, and the well, still hooked up to the electricity, kept pumping water into the place.

My property has a river running though it and it has flooded twice since 2001. Not at the building site which is considered part of the 100 year flood plain. (I learned a lot about flood plains.)  So, my building site was restricted to the same area where the mobile was. Doug has built it as a one man project. The subs are roof, electric and plumbing.

The north side of the house faces the road. the window openings are covered with plastic to keep out the rain.

I did a walk through with the plumber and electrician before Thanksgiving. The windows are now in, the showers/tub, arrived on Thursday after a long wait. I’ve designed this efficient little house to be wheelchair accessible with handicapped bathrooms. Now that these special units are inside the framed building, the sliding glass door can be set in.

My Oregon neighbors tell me it looks great with the siding on and the windows in.  Doug didn’t expect to have to stay in a 5th wheel so long without a break to come home, but he is dedicated to the job and will stay until the plumber and electrician are finished. He didn’t make it home for Thanksgiving. But he will make it home for Christmas.

The fifth wheel he has been living in, the bathroom is so small he can’t use it, he has a porta potty on the job. He is unable to shave in the mirror because his arms hit the walls and he can’t get to his face.  Not a good choice on the 5th wheel, but it does give shelter and laughter.

Now, meet the dragon. When I first began traveling back and forth between Murphys and my place in Oregon, I enjoyed a roadside sculpture of a bull. Not to be outdone, another rancher set up this marvelous dragon to entertain we passersby. He doesn’t fit well in a single photo. He must be 25 feet long.

The other joy is majestic scenery. Mt. Shasta is visible in the distance, but she was obscured by clouds when I was at the optimum place to take a photo on this trip.

A handsome devil, wouldn’t you agree?  My next trip up, early January, hopefully, I’m going to attempt to photograph the bull up close. Hmm!  With those eyelashes, he might be a she.
