Operation Day

Mary is no longer available for RV traveling, but we remain good friends.
Because we have 4,000+ postings, I’ve invited her to continue posting entries on this blog.

The motorhome is parked at Mary’s home in Murphys, California. While here I’ll perform routine maintenance and cleaning of both the motorhome and Bronco.

Mary had surgery on her right shoulder yesterday.

I want to assist her during recovery however I can. I assisted her with her left shoulder surgery in 2009. Whenever it’s convenient and I know that she is comfortable, I’ll make my future travel plans at that time.

At 1:45 PM we loaded her into the car for the trip home. She slept most of the way…

She made it through her first night with only a little discomfort. The biggest inconvenience is that she is right-handed and now has to try to do everything with her left hand. I’m there to assist her with most things. She’ll wear the sling for six weeks before beginning physical therapy. Full recovery takes six months.

I hope you enjoyed the photos.

Presidio – Monterey, California #3

The motorhome is parked at Mary’s home in Murphys, California.

Change of plans…

2015 is proving to be an overwhelming year for Mary. Her to-do plate is overflowing. Among the many things requiring her time is the completion of construction of a rental property in Rogue River, Oregon. Mary will be driving there on Saturday, May 9 for a few days of hands-on involvement, then return home to continue dealing with her over-flowing plate.

Mary’s stuff can only be attended to by herself…she’s always telling me she can not get anything done when I’m around. 🙂

So, I’ll depart her home with the motorhome and Bronco tomorrow and arrive at Rogue River on May 9th for a couple-day stay after which I’ll head for the Oregon Pacific Coast for about a six-week visit and then into the State of Washington for the summer.

We are now hoping for Mary to rejoin me sometime after July 4th. Our planned trip to Yellowstone National Park and Wyoming will hopefully now occur after the Labor Day holiday.

Recently I spent several days in Monterey…an area rich in beautiful scenery and history. A bonanza for a travel blogger! I ended up with 17 blog titles and 628 photos which I’ll present through about May 15th.

Today’s subject – Presidio (Fort)…

The Original Presidio of Monterey

The military has played a vital role on the Monterey Peninsula since the area was “discovered” and claimed for Spain by Sebastian Vizcaino in 1602. Vizcaino named the Bay Monterey, in honor of his benefactor, Gaspar de Zuniga y Acevedo, Conde de (count of) Monterrey, then viceroy of New Spain (Mexico).

You can read an excellent history of this fort by clicking this link…http://www.monterey.army.mil/About/history.html

Old Jail – Monterey, California

Recently I spent several days in Monterey…an area rich in beautiful scenery and history. A bonanza for a travel blogger! I ended up with 17 blog titles and 628 photos which I’ll present through about May 15th. This works well for me because I’ll be in an “idle period” during that time. On about May 21, Mary and I are planning to head-out for Yellowstone National Park (and other destinations) in Wyoming. Till then, enjoy Monterey!

Today’s subject – Old Jail…

The Old Monterey Jail was constructed in 1854 and served as the City Jail until 1956. No one ever escaped from the thick granite walls during its history. The building is open to the public daily. It’s located directly adjacent to Colton Hall featured in yesterday’s blog.

In the below Google Earth image, the Old Jail is marked by the yellow “X”……

Harbor Of Monterey, California #1

The motorhome is parked at Thousand Trails RV Resort in Morgan Hill, California.

My eye surgeon at the VA Hospital in Palo Alto, California wants me back for a six-month post-operation examination of my cataract surgery. My appointment is scheduled for April 21st. Palo Alto is only about 40 miles from my current location. I’ll sit here until the 21st when I’ll drive the Bronco to Palo Alto. I expect to arrive at Mary’s home in Murphys, California on either April 22 or 23.

Recently I spent several days in Monterey…an area rich in beautiful scenery and history. A bonanza for a travel blogger! I ended up with 17 blog titles and 628 photos which I’ll present over the roughly next six weeks. This works well for me because I’ll be in an “idle period” during that time. Currently I’m sitting here in Morgan Hill (I’ve been here a number of times in the past) awaiting my VA hospital appointment. Then off to Mary’s home for about four weeks during which time I’ll do routine maintenance, minor repairs and cleaning. On about May 21, Mary and I are planning to head-out for Yellowstone National Park (and other destinations) in Wyoming. Till then, enjoy Monterey!

Today’s subject – Harbor Of Monterey…

In the below Google Earth image Old Fisherman’s Wharf is on the left and Municipal Wharf #2, aka Commercial Wharf, is the longer one on the right.

The photos in this set were taken either from Old Fisherman’s Wharf or the harbor promenade between both wharfs…

National Steinbeck Center #2 – Salinas, California

The motorhome is parked at Moose Lodge #876 in Del Rey Oaks near Monterey, California.

Mary continues to be occupied with personal business. I am now not expecting to see her again until I arrive at her home in Murphys, California about the third week in April. It’s just the way things are and we just have to deal with it.

I’m now in what I’m calling my “pacing mode”. Last October I had cataract surgery at the VA Hospital in Palo Alto, California. My surgeon wants me back in mid-April for a six-month post-operative eye examination. Palo Alto is only about 87 miles from my current location. So, in the meantime, I’ll “pace” my forward direction travels hoping stay in 65-75 degree temperatures all the while. My appointment is now set for April 21st.

Last Thursday while on my way to Del Rey Oaks I passed by Salinas, California. It’s the birthplace home of author John Steinbeck and the home of the National Steinbeck Center.

Anyone considering themselves a serious reader should have read at least one of Steinbeck’s books. I’ve read five…Tortilla Flat, Of Mice and Men, Cannery Row, Travels with Charley and one of my all-time favorites (and movie) The Grapes of Wrath where Steinbeck vividly reminds us that the “good old days” were not so good for a lot of folks.

I took a lot of photos there and since I prefer to tell my traveling stories with photos (remember a picture is worth a thousand words), I’ve decided to spread this story into five installments. Today is installment #2.

Oakland, New Jersey

The motorhome is currently parked at Mary’s home in Murphys, California. My current departure date is scheduled for December 1st. Eight days and counting!

During this remaining time I’ll be attending to cleaning of the motorhome in addition to assisting Mary with her activities. This item is not particularly exciting to write about…so…instead I’ll be showing Picasa Web Albums from our 682 day, 2011-2013 circumnavigation of the United States. It was Mary’s second circumnavigation and the sixth for myself.

Unless we do something unusual, this Blog will feature a photo album from the circumnavigation and will change daily. So come back tomorrow.

To read about today’s photo album location, click this link…http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oakland,_New_Jersey

CLICK ON THE BELOW PHOTO. ONCE YOU ARRIVE AT THE PHOTO ALBUM, SIMPLY CLICK “SLIDESHOW” AND ENJOY!

I HOPE YOU ENJOYED THE PHOTOS.

The cataract surgery of my right eye was conducted on October 9th and my left eye on November 6th. Both eyes are now at 20/20. The only remaining item left (other than eye drops until early December) is a visit to the optometrist to be fitted for reading glasses at the VA Hospital in Livermore, California on November 25th.

Yesterday was a cloudy day with rain and 56 degrees. Forecast for today is partly cloudy and 59 degrees.

Enjoying nice weather is another joy in the life of a full-time RVer!
