Pat Hathaway Historical Photographs – Monterey, California

The motorhome is parked at Thousand Trails South Jetty RV Resort in Florence, Oregon. I’ve been here several times before. I plan to depart from here June 5th. I’ll slow my pace and spend the rest of May and most of June along the Oregon coast. Then into the State of Washington for the summer.

Mary is dealing with her over-flowing to-do list plate which can only be handled by herself. I’m hoping she will be able to rejoin me sometime after July 4th.

Now is a good time to finish-up the photos sets from my visit to Monterey California a couple of months ago… 

Recently I spent several days in Monterey…an area rich in beautiful scenery and history. A bonanza for a travel blogger! I ended up with 17 blog titles and 628 photos which I’ll finish presenting today.

Today’s subject – Pat Hathaway Photo Archivist

Pat Hathaway is a name that has become synonymous with historical photographs on the Monterey Peninsula, with a collection of over 80,000 images dating from the 1850s-1990s.

The initial collection, received from the window of Carmel photographer Lewis Josselyn in 1970, was the start of an avocation for the Monterey Peninsula’s premier photo archivist. His archives represent the works of over 750 19th and 20th century photographers.

The Collection has been used as a resource both locally and nationally, by publications including National Geographic, Sports Illustrated, Sunset, Golf Digest and by media including Good Morning, America and CBS’s morning show Breakfast for Your Head.

Pat is a talented photographer in his own right. He has been photographing California for 44 years and is continuing the tradition of recording the Peninsula’s rich visual history for future generations.

Steinbeck Cottage – Pacific Grove, California

Today’s subject – Steinbeck Cottage adjacent to Monterey, California…

While in Pacific Grove, I hunted down author John Steinbeck’s cottage. It looked like is was being ready to be moved…I later found out is was raised in preparation for a permanent concrete foundation.

The writer’s retreat…

John Steinbeck’s father built this small three-room cottage as a vacation home in 1903. The family spent many weekends here just a short walk from their maternal grandmother’s house on Central Avenue and few blocks from Monterey Bay.

In 1930 Steinbeck and his new bride moved into the cottage where they lived on Carol’s secretarial income and an allowance of $25 a month from his parents. Aided by his father, he built a Mexican-style fireplace, closed in the front porch and moved the entry to the side yard to make the house suitable for year round occupation. They also cultivated the garden and added a fish pond.

Here Steinbeck learned his craft on The Pastures of Heaven, To A God Unknown, In Dubious Battle, Tortilla Flat and The Red Pony. He began Of Mice and Men while still living at the cottage. According to Steinbeck, acting in a critical capacity their setter dog Toby chewed up the first manuscript. He recreated it after they moved to Los Gatos for more room and privacy in 1936.

Steinbeck returned to the house several times in the 1940s as a retreat from the increasing pressures of fame and fortune. Today it is owned by descendants of his sister Elizabeth Steinbeck Ainsworth.

Lovers Point Park – Pacific Grove, California #3

Recently I spent several days in Monterey…an area rich in beautiful scenery and history. A bonanza for a travel blogger! I ended up with 17 blog titles and 628 photos which I’ll present through about May 23rd.

Today’s subject – Lovers Point Park adjacent to Monterey, California…

According to local legend, this park was originally called “Lovers of Jesus Point,” back in the era when Pacific Grove was a Methodist retreat camp. Since the late 1800s, the beach at Lovers Point in Pacific Grove has been a popular spot for boating and swimming, and over recent decades surfers have joined the mix. Lovers Point Park has above all become Pacific Grove’s best-loved spot for picnics, plein air painting, and scenic photography. Because of its unique east-facing location, it is also one of the only spots on the West Coast where you can watch the sun rise over the water.

Locals can always be found lounging on the grass at Pacific Grove’s well-groomed 4.4-acre Lovers Point Park. Many visitors climb the rocks at the point for which it is named in order to get a spectacular view of Monterey Bay.

For over 100 years, Lovers Point Beach has been Pacific Grove’s most popular spot for shoreline recreation. Surfers love its reliable waves, while kayakers find it a perfect launching spot from which to get out on Monterey Bay and view the coastline and native wildlife. Scuba divers frequent the kelp forests here to get a close-up view of its marine denizens. Landlubbers can compete on the beach volleyball court. Lovers Point Beach is also the starting point for the infamous “Kelp Crawl” portion of the Triathlon at Pacific Grove.

Lovers Point Park – Pacific Grove, California #1

The motorhome is parked at Mary’s rental property in Wimer, Oregon. Mary and I are busy buying lots of items associated with the construction of her rental property here. My military discount has saved her almost $2,000 in four days of shopping…more shopping today.

Change of plans…

2015 is proving to be an overwhelming year for Mary. Her to-do plate is overflowing. Among the many things requiring her time is the completion of construction of a rental property in Wimer (13 miles north of Rogue River), Oregon.

Mary arrived here five days ago here for a few days of hands-on involvement, then will return home to continue dealing with her over-flowing plate.

I’m here until tomorrow morning after which I’ll head for the Oregon Pacific Coast for about a six-week visit and then into the State of Washington for the summer. My primary goals are to stay in 65-75 degree weather and take maximum advantage of my Thousand Trails membership.

We are now hoping for Mary to rejoin me on the road sometime after July 4th. Our planned trip to Yellowstone National Park and Wyoming will hopefully now occur after the Labor Day holiday.

Royal Presidio Chapel – Monterey, California #1

Today’s subject – Royal Presido Chapel aka San Carlos Cathedral…

San Carlos Borromeo de Monterey was founded by Father Junipero Serra on June 3, 1770, on the shores of Monterey Bay, as the cornerstone of his Mission. A year later, Fr. Serra moved the Mission to Carmel. The church remained as a Royal Chapel for the soldiers guarding the new Spanish Presidio of Monterey. The present sandstone church was completed in 1794.

The significance of San Carlos cannot be overstated. It is the oldest continuously functioning church and the first stone building in the State of California. It is California’s first cathedral and stands for the birth of Carmel Mission and Monterey, the first capital of California.

The exquisite Spanish Colonial style, the masterful stone facade and the Moorish influence make the Royal Presidio Chapel a true jewel of architecture, unmatched by any of the California Missions. The beautiful portals, carved in sandstone with a fine molding and ornamental arches, are also unique. The niche at the very top of the facade contains a statue of Our Lady of Guadalupe and is the oldest non-indigenous sculpture in the State. Elevated to the status of cathedral in 1849, San Carlos is one of California’s exceptional historic monuments.

This National Historic Landmark and cornerstone of Monterey is adjacent to Lake El Estero and within walking distance of Fisherman’s Wharf. Visitors and pilgrims from around the world visit the Royal Chapel, which stands as a legacy of faith and a living chronicle to our local, state and national history
