The motorhome is parked at Thousand Trails RV Resort in Monroe, Washington. I’m scheduled to depart September 28th.

 

 

 

Since my RVing life is changing (see above), I’m starting to re-visit previously visited places. So rather than constantly re-blogging past entries, I’ve decided to do something different.

  In 2011-2013, Mary and I did a 682 day, 12,679 miles in the motorhome and 8,000 miles in the Bronco, circumnavigation of the United States, which I called The Great Adventure. I called it so because other than my oldest granddaughter’s high school graduation in June in Connecticut, I didn’t know where we would be going or when we would be there!

So, unless I do something really different and unusual warranting a new blog entry, I’ll be posting entries from that trip.

The motorhome is still parked at VFW Post #10567 in Southaven, Mississippi. The location is about 1/4 mile south of the Tennessee Border and about 10 miles south of the City of Memphis. We are now expecting to depart from here tomorrow.

 

 

Yesterday I drove the Bronco the about 10 miles to downtown Memphis where we visited the Mud Island River Park. You can read all about this place by clicking this Wikipedia link…

Yesterday I drove the motorhome the about 100 miles from Greenville to Lula, Mississippi.

 

 

With the exception of the last five miles all of the travel was on Mississippi Highway 1…also called the Great River Road…

About six miles north of Greenville I stopped at the Winterville Mounds Park and Museum…

 

 

Winterville is one of the largest Native American mound sites in the United States. The people who built these massive earthworks were part of the Mississippi culture that flourished nearly one thousand years ago. Important structures such as temples and the homes of the highest-ranking members of society were built atop the mounds. Known as Mound A, the tallest mound in this park, at 55 feet is roughly the same height as a five-story building.

I’m in the heart of the Mississippi Blues Music Country which I will openly admit I am not a fan and consequently know nothing about. I saw a number of buildings similar the Last Call Bar and Grill…

 

 

As I passed through the little hamlet of Rosedale, I looked for the marker, but could not find it. According to local legend, a young musician by the name of Robert Johnson sold his soul to the Devil at the crossroads of Mississippi Highways 1 and 8 to achieve success. He died at age 27…hmmm. Note: Mary flew from Baton Rouge Airport, Louisiana on March 12 to her home in California. I’m hoping to get her back with me by mid-April. My current plans are to drift SLOWLY north along the Mississippi River to Memphis, Tennessee where I’ll then turn northeast heading for New England for the Summer. Can’t go north too fast because it’s still cold up there! The Mississippi River is rich in history…I expect it to be an interesting passage.

Natchez remained mostly undamaged from the Civil War. Hence this old city with its narrow and many one-way streets remains a beautiful city. To read about Natchez, click this link…

Executive Director Mimi Miller and her able assistant Patricia Catchings graciously allowed me access to their photographic archives. I told them I was particularly interested in that area known as Natchez Under The Hill…along the Mississippi River waterfront.

Yesterday’s first stop of the day was at the First Presbyterian Church…

While the church was interesting…it was not the primary reason for my stop. Rather it was for the attached Stratton Hall where there is housed a permanent 600+ black and white photography gallery of old Natchez entitled Natchez in Historic Photographs. Since every photograph was framed and covered in glass, light reflections made for difficult photographic conditions. Nonetheless, I spent a good 1.5 hours enjoying the old beautiful images. If you ever find yourself in Natchez, I highly recommend you visit this great exhibit which is located at 405 State Street.

 

 

 

 

 

Next stop was just a couple of short blocks away is the Natchez Museum of African-American History and Culture which is located in the old Post Office building at 301 Main Street…

I had the good fortune to meet Darrell White, the Director of the Museum. He invited me to sit and chat with him. We had a most interesting one hour conversation. After leaving Mr. White it was time for a late lunch.

 

 

 

 

 

I’ll share with you now, one of my traveling secrets. I always ask the locals where they would go for the best lunch in town. I tell them that I’m especially seeking out a small Mom and Pop…hole in the wall kind of place where I’m likely to find home cooking. I’ve had many a great meal I would have missed. Employing this method once again, several locals told me of the Cotton Alley Cafe…just across the street and down one block from the museum. So, off I went to 208 Main Street…

 

 

 

 

 

While it does not qualify for a hole in the wall Mom and Pop kind of place…

 

 

 

 

 

I enjoyed a great meal and great Service. Guy Bass is the Owner and has been in the restaurant business for 30+ years…

The motorhome is parked at Thousand Trails RV Resort in Bow, Washington. I’ll depart here August 20th.

 

 

 

Since my RVing life is changing (see above), I’m starting to re-visit previously visited places. So rather than constantly re-blogging past entries, I’ve decided to do something different.

  In 2011-2013, Mary and I did a 682 day, 12,679 miles in the motorhome and 8,000 miles in the Bronco, circumnavigation of the United States, which I called The Great Adventure. I called it so because other than my oldest granddaughter’s high school graduation in June in Connecticut, I didn’t know where we would be going or when we would be there!

So, unless I do something really different and unusual warranting a new blog entry, I’ll be posting entries from that trip.

Note: Mary flew from Baton Rouge Airport, Louisiana on March 12 to her home in California. I’m hoping to get her back with me by mid-April. My current plans are to drift SLOWLY north along the Mississippi River to Memphis, Tennessee where I’ll then turn northeast heading for New England for the Summer. Can’t go north too fast because it’s still cold up there! The Mississippi River is rich in history…I expect it to be an interesting passage.

The American Queen, had arrived at 8:00 AM. At 418 feet long and 99 feet to the top of her stacks, it’s the largest river steamboat ever built. Her passengers toured Natchez by the steamboat company bus and departed at 5:00 PM. I tried, but was not allowed to take interior photos. You can read about the American Queen by clicking this link…

Final stop of the day was at the second part of the Natchez National Historical Park…Melrose. This 1800s Greek revival-style mansion represents the height of Southern prosperity and the “Cotton Kingdom.” Built by the John T. McMurran family beginning in 1841, Melrose was, according to McMurran daughter-in-law Alice Austen, “very elegant; one of the handsomest places I have seen North or South.” If you are curious, I found this YouTube video of Melrose on the Internet…

Yesterday, still a little tired from the previous day’s long hot and humid drive, I decided to have a shortened day out and about. First stop was at the Natchez Visitor Reception Center to pickup brochures and maps, both local and for my upcoming drive through western Mississippi to Memphis Tennessee.

 

 

It’s one of the largest visitors centers to which I’ve ever been. Including a 20 minute video entitled The Natchez Story, the center is a mini-museum itself, I was there for 1.5 hours.

Next stop was Bluff Park where, in the past, the wealthy built their homes for the scenic views across the Mississippi River of Vidalia, Louisiana, refreshing breezes and beautiful sunsets…

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Then down to an area called Natchez under the hill. The river waterfront was the rougher, seedier part of town where the poorer folks located. Today, of course, its been cleaned up…
