The motorhome is parked at Thousand Trails RV Resort in Monroe, Washington. I’m scheduled to depart September 24th.

 

 

 

Since my RVing life is changing (see above), I’m starting to re-visit previously visited places. So rather than constantly re-blogging past entries, I’ve decided to do something different.

  In 2011-2013, Mary and I did a 682 day, 12,679 miles in the motorhome and 8,000 miles in the Bronco, circumnavigation of the United States, which I called The Great Adventure. I called it so because other than my oldest granddaughter’s high school graduation in June in Connecticut, I didn’t know where we would be going or when we would be there!

So, unless I do something really different and unusual warranting a new blog entry, I’ll be posting entries from that trip.

Yesterday I drove the motorhome the about 100 miles from Greenville to Lula, Mississippi.

 

 

With the exception of the last five miles all of the travel was on Mississippi Highway 1…also called the Great River Road…

About six miles north of Greenville I stopped at the Winterville Mounds Park and Museum…

 

 

Winterville is one of the largest Native American mound sites in the United States. The people who built these massive earthworks were part of the Mississippi culture that flourished nearly one thousand years ago. Important structures such as temples and the homes of the highest-ranking members of society were built atop the mounds. Known as Mound A, the tallest mound in this park, at 55 feet is roughly the same height as a five-story building.

I’m in the heart of the Mississippi Blues Music Country which I will openly admit I am not a fan and consequently know nothing about. I saw a number of buildings similar the Last Call Bar and Grill…

 

 

As I passed through the little hamlet of Rosedale, I looked for the marker, but could not find it. According to local legend, a young musician by the name of Robert Johnson sold his soul to the Devil at the crossroads of Mississippi Highways 1 and 8 to achieve success. He died at age 27…hmmm. Southaven, Mississippi – Day 2

The motorhome is now parked at VFW Post #10567 in Southaven, Mississippi. The location is about 1/4 mile south of the Tennessee Border and about 10 miles south of the City of Memphis. We will stay here while we explore the Memphis area for the next several days.

Mary returns to me today. I’ll meet her at the airport at 6:00 PM.

Yesterday I ventured less than five miles into Tennessee. I went to the Memphis Visitors Center to pickup maps and brochures for things we may want to see and do while in the area. It’s interesting what happened. Crossing the state line and the slow southern way of life seem to disappear. Back into traffic and noise immediately. Hmmm….

Shortly thereafter I was back in Mississippi and spent about three hours going to thrift and used book stores to replenish my dwindling supply of books. I saw something I have never seen before…a Goodwill Bookstore. It’s part of the Goodwill system…but at this store they sell only books. It was neat and clean and all the books are sorted by author which made it very pleasant to shop there. I bought several books…

I forgot to show you a photo I took while at the Delma Firmiss Hospitality Center at Lula, Mississippi a couple of nights ago. It was taken at midnight through the passenger-side windshield. I thought it made for a neat photo…

Today’s activities are expected to include…get a haircut…do laundry and pickup Mary.

Here’s (I guess) an interesting side note. The On The Road With Jim And Mary Blog has just passed the 2,000 followers mark. Current number is at 2,022. Thanks to all of you who follow along the road of life with us. We enjoy sharing our experiences with you vicariously.

Southaven, Mississippi – Day 1

Note: I’m now in the Memphis, Tennessee area.  Mary has made her flight reservations. She arrives at 5:59 PM tomorrow.

For the past several weeks I’ve been indicating that I was slowly heading towards Memphis. Well, I’m here…kinda sorta…after driving the motorhome the about 50 miles from Lula to Southaven, Mississippi.

The below Google Earth image shows my situation. The airport is marked APT and is about three miles away. Memphis is clearly shown only 10 miles away. I’m currently parked at the very friendly VFW Post #10567…only about 1/4 mile from the Tennessee Border shown by the red line…

I arrived about 11:30 AM yesterday morning and found folks preparing for a state district meeting. Commander Johnny Weber welcomed me and indicated I should park at the back of the building where I could take advantage of an electrical hookup…which makes life a little more comfortable…

I spent the better part of the afternoon doing some Internet research on potential visiting stops and routes as we’ll start to head towards New England after departing from here.

The bar opened at 4:00 PM and shortly thereafter…in I  went. I ended up sitting next to the Post Quartermaster Harry Ross and out-going State Commander James Chapman. I got to telling them the story of how I had recently changed my post membership to #4224 in Baker, Louisiana and also becoming a VFW Life Member.

I asked Harry, as Quartermaster, if he happened to have in stock any Life Member vehicle plates. He indicated no…they had to be ordered from the catalog. The next thing I knew Commander James asking the barmaid if she had a screwdriver…which she did. He asked Harry to take his Life Member plate off of his truck and give it to me. Can you believe that? So, outside we went to get the deed accomplished. In the below photo, Harry is on the left and James on the right…

Harry told me of how three out of the last four State Commanders have come out of this post. A most interesting fact!

Here’s a photo of the Life Member plate which is now proudly attached to the front of the motorhome…

Thanks James…the plate will always have special meaning for me!

Today’s planned activities include stopping in at both Tennessee and Memphis Visitors Centers to pickup brochures about places we may want to visit while in this area. Also a long overdue haircut and searching out some used book stores to replenish my dwindling supply of books.

I expect we will be here for about 10 days exploring the Memphis area.
