The motorhome is parked at Thousand Trails RV Resort in La Conner, Washington. I’ll depart here September 10th..

 

 

 

Since my RVing life is changing (see above), I’m starting to re-visit previously visited places. So rather than constantly re-blogging past entries, I’ve decided to do something different.

  In 2011-2013, Mary and I did a 682 day, 12,679 miles in the motorhome and 8,000 miles in the Bronco, circumnavigation of the United States, which I called The Great Adventure. I called it so because other than my oldest granddaughter’s high school graduation in June in Connecticut, I didn’t know where we would be going or when we would be there!

So, unless I do something really different and unusual warranting a new blog entry, I’ll be posting entries from that trip.

Note: Mary flew from Baton Rouge Airport, Louisiana on March 12 to her home in California. I’m hoping to get her back with me by mid-April. My current plans are to drift SLOWLY north along the Mississippi River to Memphis, Tennessee where I’ll then turn northeast heading for New England for the Summer. Can’t go north too fast because it’s still cold up there! The Mississippi River is rich in history…I expect it to be an interesting passage.

Yesterday was laundry day…not a particularly interesting Blog topic. So, Instead I’ll share with you what I did on Saturday night. Once again I drove the Bronco the about 15 miles to Ferriday, Louisiana where I was first on Friday to visit the Delta Music Museum. If you missed that Blog posting, here’s the link…

At the invitation of Judith Bingham, Director of the Delta Music Museum, I went to the Arcade Theater to see the Louisiana Country Music Opry. This wonderful event takes place every fourth Saturday at 7:00 PM.

Ferriday is a town of about 3,000 people. The Arcade Theater sits only about 125 people and everyone knows everyone…

 

 

 

 

 

Prior to the show Judith took me backstage to meet Somer Lance, famed rock n roller Jerry Lee Lewis’s grand-daughter who performed that night. I also got to meet Gene King, the leader of the band…

The Gene King Band is the regular band for the Opry. It features four guitars, electric, steel, acoustic and bass in addition to a keyboard and drums. They have a real nice sound…

Just before a 15 minute intermission, Judith has a drawing for door prizes. I did not win one but a nearby couple insisted on giving me their prize…a package of BBQ seasonings. Judith also told the folks how to find my Blog on the Internet. During the intermission many folks came up and said hello and Welcome to Louisiana to me. You just cannot find friendlier people than in Louisiana…

 

 

 

 

 

During the second half of the show Somer performed once again…

Once again after the show many folks came to me to say hello. When I went to buy the band’s CD…they would not take my money. They just insisted in giving it to me. All in all…another most enjoyable evening!!! Thank you Judith Bingham for the invitation!

I’m finishing up an eight-day visit at “the friendliest VFW Post in the United States”. No offense meant to other VFW Posts…but if there is a friendlier post…I haven’t been there. Here’s some photos of the bar area…

Ever present past Commander Mark. He’s always there and everywhere…like preparing to cook yesterday’s corned beef meal. He usually cooks something every Sunday…except during the Summer when he plays golf.  Sill in the Air Force Reserve…he has 29 years of service…

 

 

It was Mark who welcomed me upon my arrival a week ago Sunday and got me setup in to my parking place and offered an electrical hookup.

 

 

This VFW Post has a unique gesture which I’ve really not seen at other posts. Pretty near everyone, when arriving or departing, will take the time to stop, say hello and shake hands with everyone in the bar. They even did it for newly arrived me. This membership uniqueness moved me so that I have decided to transfer my membership to this post and become a VFW Life Member as well.  My transfer application is in process and I’ll soon be a member of “The Friendliest VFW Post In The United States”. Thank you to all the members for your friendship…I’m proud to be affiliated with you!

The motorhome is currently parked at VFW Post #4224 in Baker, a few miles north of Baton Rouge.

 

 

Yesterday was another interesting day. I drove the Bronco the about 10 miles to the African-American Museum in Baton Rouge. They are located at 528 South Boulevard and have no website that I could find. Located adjacent to the New St. Luke’s Baptist Church and partially under the overhead of Interstate Highway 10, Founder-Curator Sadie Roberts-Joseph provided a most interesting visit. She has been dedicated to this labor of love for 12 years.

 

 

The official name of the museum is the Odell S. Williams Now & Then Museum of African-American History. Odell S. Williams taught African-American History to elementary school children in Baton Rouge. She passed away in 2009.

69-year-old Sadie Roberts-Joseph is an intelligent, knowledgeable and well-spoken individual. She exhumes compassion, love, consideration and giving to all human beings. After my one hour there, I felt that my life had been enriched by my visit with her…

 

 

On the way back to the motorhome I had another nice experience. I stopped by American Legion Post #502. The American Legion is currently celebrating its 94th birthday and this post has been in existence for 85 years. Other than the bar tender, the only person there was Mr. Bell, an 88-year-old World War II Veteran. He told me the post has less than one-half dozen World War II Veterans left. We spoke for about 45 minutes and he related some of his war stories with me. Another enriching experience!

It’s only a block away from the state capital building which at 450 feet and 34 stories makes it the tallest capital building in the United States…

 

 

 

 

 

It is a huge museum situated on two floors which I hurriedly covered in four hours when eight would have been more appropriate…and it’s free admission! It does a great job of detailing the history and cultures of this remarkable state…

The motorhome is parked at Thousand Trails RV Resort in La Conner, Washington. I’ll depart here August 13th.

 

 

 

Since my RVing life is changing (see above), I’m starting to re-visit previously visited places. So rather than constantly re-blogging past entries, I’ve decided to do something different.

  In 2011-2013, Mary and I did a 682 day, 12,679 miles in the motorhome and 8,000 miles in the Bronco, circumnavigation of the United States, which I called The Great Adventure. I called it so because other than my oldest granddaughter’s high school graduation in June in Connecticut, I didn’t know where we would be going or when we would be there!

So, unless I do something really different and unusual warranting a new blog entry, I’ll be posting entries from that trip.

Note: Mary flew from Baton Rouge Airport, Louisiana on March 12 to her home in California. I’m hoping to get her back with me by mid-April. My current plans are to stay here for a few days and then start SLOWLY drifting north along the Mississippi River to Memphis, Tennessee where I’ll then turn northeast heading for New England. Can’t go north too fast because it’s still cold up there!

It is an excellently done museum where they have a large main building and several other buildings that have been moved from the plantations to that location…

Gwen Laviolette was my individual tour guide. She’s a retired French language school teacher, born in St. Martinsville, Louisiana and has lived in the area most of her life. She is very knowledgeable and provided me with a lot of information which greatly added to my visit there…

 

 

The museum is actually located in Port Allen…directly across the Mississippi River from Baton Rouge…is funded by the Parish and hence the name…West Baton Rouge Museum. You can read about Port Allen by clicking this Wikipedia link…

Gwen told me that in the past in this area of Louisiana…sugar was king. In 1900 there were 26 sugar mills…the last one closed in 2005. You can read about and see photos of that mill by clicking this link…
