Lake Charles, Louisiana Day 9 (GA399)

Mary is no longer available for RV traveling, but we remain good friends.
Because we have 5,000+ postings, I’ve invited her to continue posting entries on this blog.
I’m currently in my 23rd year of full-time RVing and my lifestyle is changing, For more info click Here

The motorhome is parked at Thousand Trails RV Resort in La Connor, Washington. I’ll depart here July 16th.

Since my RVing life is changing (see above), I’m starting to re-visit previously visited places. So rather than constantly re-blogging past entries, I’ve decided to do something different.

The motorhome is parked at the 1,086 acre Sam Houston Jones State Park about 12 miles north of the city. We have been here enjoying Mardi Gras which ended Tuesday. We will move along later this morning.

Yesterday we rested from our Mardi Gras experiences…fun but tiring. Among the things we did was take a nice walk alongside a small Cypress Swamp directly across the road from where we are parked. You can read about this park by clicking this Wikipedia link…

The motorhome is parked at the 1,086 acre Sam Houston Jones State Park about 12 miles north of the city. We have been here enjoying Mardi Gras which ended Tuesday. We had planned to depart here today, but we are still weary and need to rest some more. We now expect to leave tomorrow..

LAISSEZ LES BON TEMPS ROULER!

You see this slogan everywhere in Louisiana. In French it means… LET THE GOOD TIMES ROLL!

And roll they did on Fat Tuesday, the last day of Mardi Gras this year.

Our day started with a 30 minute drive to the small town of Iowa (pronounced locally as I-O-WAY) to witness the chasing of the chickens. If you do not know the history of this tradition, reading this Wikipedia link will take care of that…
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Courir_de_Mardi_Gras

The event was scheduled to start at 10:00 AM. We were late getting out of the motorhome and did not arrive until 10:30. They were late getting started and said they would begin at 11:00. But we could not stay because we had other obligations elsewhere. So we took a few pictures and departed…

Another about 30 minute drive brought us to the home of Renola Simon (pronounced SEE-MON in French) where the Krewe de les Cajuns float is stored. We’ve been invited to ride on the float during the final and biggest parade of the Lake Charles Mardi Gras!

The first two hours was spent getting to know everyone, eating and making the float ready…

021

Renola served spicy deer and pork sausages that were really yummy…

022

Here’s the float…

027

And the back of the jacket of the Krewe de les Cajuns…

035

The float was towed by this truck…

036

On the way to the parade assembly point, it started to mist lightly and Mary was ready with her garbage bag raincoat…

040

The parade assembled right along the shore of Lake Charles. It threatened to rain, but never really did…

041

We took a walk to see some of the other 50+ floats…

052

Here’s Mary with 80-year-old Renola Simon…our hostess. She was a founding member of the Krewe de les Cajuns 26 years ago and has done this every year since…

070

Here’s the others with whom we rode the float…

076

We had a three-hour wait for the parade to begin and Mary really got into the mood…

085

Click this link to see a short video…
http://youtu.be/nGfcufU9aUE

With the French Cajun Music blaring loudly, at 5:00 PM we started rolling down the main drag of Ryan Street in Lake Charles…

099

The object was to throw as many string of beads and plastic cups to the begging crowd as fast as possible. We guesstimate the Krewe threw 25,000+ during the 1.5 hour parade route…

104

Into the night we continued. It was amazing to see how a string of beads or a plastic cup brought a beautiful smile to the face of the recipients…

110

We just had a blast! Thank you Krewe de Les Cajuns for inviting us along. We will never forget you!   LAISSEZ LES BON TEMPS ROULER!

Yesterday we rode on the Krewe de Cajun float in the final Mardi Gras Parade. You’ll get to see those photos tomorrow.

Today’s photos are from Monday. Heading out at 4:00 PM, the first stop was to respond to an invitation from Lake Charles Mayor Randy Roach to visit him at his office. He has been Mayor since 2000. He is a very pleasant and knowledgeable man and we enjoyed a 45 minute visit with him.

As always you may left click upon an image to see an enlarged view and then click once again to see an even larger view…

007

He has a beautiful abstract painting of Lake Charles in his office…

009

Everyone we talked to spoke very highly of him….

015

Both the Mayor and ourselves had to move on to attend the Royal Gala at the nearby Civic Center. The Royal Gala is the Cinderella moment of the season which features the 2013 courts of more than 50 Krewes with kings, queens, royal dukes and duchesses, captains, courtesans and jesters, It’s where they get to strut their stuff in their fabulous finery. Depending on the size of the Krewe…the strutting runs anywhere from one to five minutes.

This is where the Royal Gala took place. We sat on the left side about 1/2 way up with our new friends from the Krewe de Cajun…which had it been a football field would have been the 50 yard line…

019

Before the program began, a member of the 12th Night Revelers posed with a child…

018

Before I show you the photos, you need to know the conditions were most difficult. All photos were taken hand-held. A purist would have used a tripod. In addition to being far away, the subjects were, because of the moving spotlights, in the light one second and in the dark the next second…and they were constantly moving. Here;s a short video which will help you understand the circumstances of the event. Just click the link…
http://youtu.be/yiCH42t37o4

As the revelers left the runway, they stopped and bowed to the assembled royalty…

The colorful program ran an enjoyable 2+ hours.

Tomorrow you get to see the photos from the final day of Mardi Gras where we got to ride on the float of the Krewe de Cajun.

Yesterday was our fifth day in Lake Charles and the second one with Mardi Gras activity. Back to the second floor of the Civic Center where the first event of the day was the Taste de la Louisiane, For $7 a person we got to sample a variety of Louisiana special cooking. Mary and I tend to like our food spicy, so we thought the offerings were a bit on the bland side, but otherwise fine…

She knows everyone in Lake Charles or so it seemed. There was a terrific Cajun band playing by the name of The Sundown Playboys…

and dancing to the music were a bunch of French people from a dancing club. Here’s the back of their shirts which means…I think…The Good Time Dancers Association of French Cajun Music – Lake Charles Chapter…

She also introduced us to Lesa Cormier. the son of the founder and also the manager of the band…

Lesa was kind enough to give us a copy of their latest CD. We played it last night in the motorhome and let me tell you…IT’S THE REAL THING! Cajun Music just does not get any better!!!

By time we finished there, we had an invitation to ride on the Krewe de Cajun float on Fat Tuesday…which is tomorrow and the final day of Mardi Gras. We also are invited to sit with them this evening at the Royal Gala…The Cinderella moment of the season features the 2013 courts of more than 50 Krewes with kings, queens, royal dukes and cuchesses, captains, courtesans and jesters,

What is a Krewe? I’m glad you asked…here’s the answer…

First you make a Krewe:

A krewe is any group or organization of revelers to band together to host a Mardi Gras ball, ride on a Mardi Gras parade float and participate in social events throughout the year.

In Southwest Louisiana, there are more than 50 krewes, a number that continues to grow each season. Each krewe is a part of a larger organization called Krewe of Krewes that formed in 1979 when the area’s krewes joined together to create a parade for the community enjoyment. Now the culmination of Southwest Louisiana Mardi Gras festivities, the Krewe of Krewes Parade was first held in 1980.

Just as one pot of gumbo varies from the next, krewes are formed for many different reasons and one can gain acceptance to a krewe in many different ways. Southwest Louisiana Mardi Gras krewes offer a fun way for all families to get involved in the Carnival season. Read on for more information on area krewes and perhaps find a way to get involved in one yourself!

Eva also introduced to the local media people. The fellow from on the left is from the local newspaper and the fellow on the right from the local TV station. He indicated he would like to interview us in the motorhome and said he would call us today to set the time…

009

Then it was time to move outside for the Children’s Parade. We were stationed just outside the parking lot when the parade began as well as the RAIN…

By time the parade was finished we had a huge pile of beads plus we were soaking wet! We still have yesterday’s clothing scattered all over the motorhome trying to get them dried.

More Mardi Gras stuff on tap for today!

Enjoying Louisiana Mardi Gras is another joy in the life of a full-time RVer!

Lake Charles, Louisiana Day 4 (GA394)

Mary is no longer available for RV traveling, but we remain good friends.
Because we have 5,000+ postings, I’ve invited her to continue posting entries on this blog.
I’m currently in my 23rd year of full-time RVing and my lifestyle is changing, For more info click Here

The motorhome is parked at Thousand Trails RV Resort in La Connor, Washington. I’ll depart here July 16th.

Since my RVing life is changing (see above), I’m starting to re-visit previously visited places. So rather than constantly re-blogging past entries, I’ve decided to do something different.

This entry was posted February 10, 2013…

The motorhome is parked at the 1,086 acre Sam Houston Jones State Park about 12 miles north of the city. We are here to enjoy Mardi Gras and will depart on February 13th.

Yesterday was our fourth day in Lake Charles, but the first one with Mardi Gras activity. Before we departed the motorhome Mary got into her Mardi Gras costume. First the R-rated version…

Off we went to the Lake Charles Civic Center alongside the lake. First event of the day was attending the World Famous Cajun Extravaganza/Gumbo Cook-Off. In a very large room with 1,000+ people and about 30 booths offering their own kind of Gumbo, we wandered in. For only $5 per person you could taste and enjoy as much Gumbo as your stomach would allow and all the time a Cajun Zydeco Band provided some great music. Here are some of the photos from that event…
