Lake Arthur, Louisiana Day 4 (GA407)

Mary is no longer available for RV traveling, but we remain good friends.
Because we have 4,000+ postings, I’ve invited her to continue posting entries on this blog.
I’m currently in my 23rd year of full-time RVing and my lifestyle is changing, For more info click Here

The motorhome is parked at Thousand Trails RV Resort in Bow, Washington. I’ll depart here July 23rd..

Since my RVing life is changing (see above), I’m starting to re-visit previously visited places. So rather than constantly re-blogging past entries, I’ve decided to do something different.

Yesterday we drove the Bronco the about seven miles to the home of Marlene Ritter and Mark Conner. Mark is 44 years old and has lived on the same road all of his life. To me, he looks like a younger Tommy Lee Jones, the movie actor…

Mary enjoyed eating the catfish which made it into her tummy about two hours after coming out of the water. She really enjoyed them. I tried a couple of bites…but catfish just don’t float my boat. Nonetheless I enjoyed watching and learning of the process.

Enjoying catching catfish in Louisiana is another joy in the life of a full-time RVer!

Yesterday we waited out the weather forecast of severe thunderstorms with large hail and significant risk of tornadoes. Fortunately, the tornado warnings ended at 7:00 PM with none occurring. We did receive some heavy rain squalls and some wind.

We had planned to depart today…but the weather forecast is terrible…severe thunderstorms with large hail and significant risk of tornadoes.  Since we are safe here we’ve decided to stay. Then the locals keep on inviting us to see activities here, so I expect we’ll be here another two-three days.

Yesterday we drove the motorhome the about 40 miles from Sweet Lake to Lake Arthur, Louisiana.

In my last Blog entry I mentioned how we had spent the night in the parking lot of the Cameron Prairie National Wildlife Refuge which we did not get to visit until just before our departure yesterday morning.

Inside was a life-sized replica of an Alligator which we have not seen in real life. We are told that it’s too cold and they are in hiding until warmer weather…

There were a number of Roseate Spoonbills in the area. Photography was difficult because there was a strong, cold wind. I had no tripod so I hand-held. They were far away and other than the ones that had their heads under their wings to stay warm, were constantly moving. Nonetheless, I got a few photos…

Lake Arthur, Louisiana

The motorhome is parked at Mary’s home in Murphys, California. Mary is traveling with her 14-year-old grandson on a trip to Turkey.

In other news…

Last September during my eye exam at the Seattle, Washington VA Hospital I was told I have a large cataract in my right eye that should be attended to in the next year.

On March 24th, we drove the Bronco 104 miles (one way) to the VA Medical Center at Livermore, California for my new eye exam which confirmed my cataract in my right eye. I was told I’m a candidate for surgery. I was told I would receive a telephone call within 30 days. I’ve been waiting for  that phone call to establish an appointment for a consultation with an eye surgeon. Yesterday, I finally made a telephone connection to create an appointment for Monday April 28th. Since it’s about 150 miles, I plan to depart here on Sunday.

During my eye exam I was told that the surgery would be performed at the large Palo Alto facility near San Francisco. Just like being in the military, I am now standing in line and waiting! 🙂

A more relaxed mode..

After our 682 day on-the-go 2011-2013 circumnavigation of the United States, we have decided to slip into a more relaxed mode. In the next few months we will be traveling through areas previously explored. Unless we do something unusual, this Blog will feature a photo album from the circumnavigation and will change daily.

Iota, Louisiana

Yesterday we drove the motorhome the about 25 miles from Lake Arthur to Iota, Louisiana. The motorhome is parked on a side street near American Legion Post #371 (white building) which was closed on a Saturday. We’ll move along this morning.

You can read about Iota, Louisiana by clicking this Wikipedia link…
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iota,_Louisiana

As always you may left click upon an image to see an enlarged view and then click once again to see an even larger view…

040

Here’s the dinette window view…

043

And a partially hidden colorful sunset shot…

046

Prior to leaving Lake Arthur, the night before, Mary wanted some boiled Crawfish…so we went to Cody’s Cajun Seafood and Crawfish Shop…

DSC03286 (Copy)

Mary expected to buy them and take them back to the motorhome and cook them there (she did buy an additional pound and did that also), but Cody asked her if she wanted to eat the cooked ones now. She did eat three pounds while Cody explained the ways of the Crawfish World…DSC03280 (Copy)

He asked who we were and we told him…and ended up with an invitation to join him at his Crawfish ponds yesterday morning. The following photos show the harvesting of Crawfish. These ponds are 55 acres with 1,200 Crawfish traps. The water is about 18 inches deep…

001

It takes a specially designed motor for the shallow water…

002

Here’s a partial view of the fields…

033

Here’s a view of a Crawfish Trap. The traps are baited with scrap fish pieces or processed bait. The Crawfish enter through one of the small three corner holes. They are harvested through the large hole at the top. A stake holds the trap to the pond bottom…

One person drives the boat while another pulls the traps…one about every five seconds. In that time the trap is emptied, re-baited and put back into the pond…

030

The trap is emptied onto a grader. If they are too small and fall through the opening…they get to live another day…

022

If they do not get through, they are swept into a net bag which holds about 32-35 pounds…

028

Here’s a different kind of boat where one person can both drive and harvest. It’s called a digger because of the front-mounted wheel..

Here’s a photo of a rear digger boat…also a one person operation…
