Redding, California

Mary is traveling with her 14-year-old grandson on a trip to Turkey. I expect her to catch up with me sometime in mid-May somewhere in Oregon.

Yesterday I drove the 131 miles from Nicolaus to Redding, California. Most of the trip was on California Highway 99, a much more pleasant drive than yesterday’s drive on Interstate Highway 5. Much of 99 passes through miles of orchards…

Along the way I stopped at a couple of GoodWill stores to buy some used books to add to my waiting-to-be read collection. Arriving at Redding, I parked at Moose Lodge #1006…

Yesterday was a sunny day at 95 degrees. Forecast for Redding today is sunny at 95 degrees. Too dang hot! This morning I’m heading due west to the California coast to escape this terrible heat. The forecast for my destination of McKinleyville is only 60 degrees. A little cool but much better than this horrible heat!

Working On The Motorhome – Day 5

The motorhome is parked in Mary’s yard at her home at Murphys, California. I expect to be here until shortly after Thanksgiving cleaning and doing minor work on both the motorhome and Bronco. After our 682 day journey, they are both ready for some attention.

A brief preview of coming winter weather today…temperature 55 degrees with a couple of thunderstorms. Through November 15th, forecast is sunny with cooler temps.

Now that all my outside work is done on the motorhome and Bronco,  I’ve shifted my attention to the inside of the motorhome, meaning…interior cleaning.

If you remember yesterday, I decided to clean under Mary’s dinette seat that started like this…

As always you may left click upon an image to see an enlarged view and then click once again to see an even larger view…

DSC07514

Most of the stuff under there is printed materials that I brought from my previous motorhome and been hauling around for years. Such as maps and guide books for every state, Mexico and Central America which all are now available online. The under the seat area now looks like this…

DSC07528

I’m betting Mary will find a way to fill that empty space soon… 🙂

I also cleaned out the rat’s nest in my compartment above the driver’s seat…

DSC07524

Here are the outgoing items. The metal detector which we never used will go to Mary’s grand-kids. The two tripods will go to Mary’s kids. All the stuff in the large box Mary will go through to decide their ultimate fate…recycle center, Good will, etc…

DSC07529

Slowly but surely, I’m chipping away at my to do list. More cleaning today.

Since our accident about 1.5 years ago, I now suffer from diminished energy/stamina. I can now work only 2-3 hours a day before I get tired and have to quit. I know that these current Blog entries are not particularly exciting reading, but they do reflect the daily activities of a full-time RVer. Gotta stop and clean and work on the vehicles once in a while!

Southaven, Mississippi – Day 6

The motorhome is still parked at VFW Post #10567 in Southaven, Mississippi. The location is about 1/4 mile south of the Tennessee Border and about 10 miles south of the City of Memphis. We will stay here while we explore the Memphis area for the next several days.

Mary had another neck painful day yesterday…so we decided to stay home. But she need to make copies of some legal paperwork…so we had to go out for that task.

First, we went through our closets to identify seldom worn or tight-fitting clothed for donation to Goodwill…

Ready at last…off we went. Along the way we passed Don’s Speed Shop with a number of seldom seen vehicles in the lot…so naturally we stopped to take photos…

Upon returning and by the end of the day, Mary decided she wanted a second acupuncture treatment and phoned to make an appointment. That’s where we will be at 9:00 AM this morning. She’s hoping that will take care of her neck pain.

Southaven, Mississippi – Day 2

The motorhome is now parked at VFW Post #10567 in Southaven, Mississippi. The location is about 1/4 mile south of the Tennessee Border and about 10 miles south of the City of Memphis. We will stay here while we explore the Memphis area for the next several days.

Mary returns to me today. I’ll meet her at the airport at 6:00 PM.

Yesterday I ventured less than five miles into Tennessee. I went to the Memphis Visitors Center to pickup maps and brochures for things we may want to see and do while in the area. It’s interesting what happened. Crossing the state line and the slow southern way of life seem to disappear. Back into traffic and noise immediately. Hmmm….

The below Google Earth image shows my relative location to the Memphis area. The V is the location of VFW Post #10567 where I am currently parked. The red line indicates the Tennessee/Mississippi Border…

Shortly thereafter I was back in Mississippi and spent about three hours going to thrift and used book stores to replenish my dwindling supply of books. I saw something I have never seen before…a Goodwill Bookstore. It’s part of the Goodwill system…but at this store they sell only books. It was neat and clean and all the books are sorted by author which made it very pleasant to shop there. I bought several books…

I forgot to show you a photo I took while at the Delma Firmiss Hospitality Center at Lula, Mississippi a couple of nights ago. It was taken at midnight through the passenger-side windshield. I thought it made for a neat photo…

Today’s activities are expected to include…get a haircut…do laundry and pickup Mary.

Here’s (I guess) an interesting side note. The On The Road With Jim And Mary Blog has just passed the 2,000 followers mark. Current number is at 2,022. Thanks to all of you who follow along the road of life with us. We enjoy sharing our experiences with you vicariously.

Here’s another side note…
RVTravel.com publishes several Blogs that offer news, information and tips about the RVing World…all for free! In yesterday’s RV Daily Tips Issue 101, On The Road With Jim And Mary was identified as Website of the Day. You can see that issue by clicking this link…

In Never-Never Land…

In yesterday’s Blog entry I discussed finding myself involved with something I thought I would never do again…that is be involved in a garage/yard sale. 16 years ago I had several as I was clearing out of my house readying to shift gears into a full-time RVing lifestyle. At that time…I said to myself…never-never again. I guess it just goes to prove we never know from day-to-day what’s going to happen in our lives.

So yesterday…here I was…helping Mary with her yard sale…back in never-never land. I assumed the roles of a sales associate…general laborer and parking director…

I was going to sell my portable propane campfire/cooker…But Mary having never seen one before…decided she wanted to keep it for her family gatherings…

So…by the end of the day having made $96 dollars for all that work…had Mary saying…NEVER-NEVER AGAIN! From now on she said she’ll just load everything she wants to get rid of into her truck and haul it to Goodwill.

But…ahah…her ads committed her/us to a two-day yard sale. So…once again today…we will enter never-never land again. Hopefully this will be the very last time for both of us.

The Flood Zone…

Yesterday I spoke of my reservations at Thousand Trails RV Resort in Manteca, California for April 3-17 being canceled because the San Joaquin River overflowed its banks and flooded the campground.

Today I thought I’d show you a Google Earth view of the flood zone…

The photo is not “real-time”. It says it was taken June 14, 2010, but I think it gives you the big picture of how the campground might be susceptible to flooding after a couple of weeks of heavy rain as experienced by this area recently.  This campground is very popular this time of year because it’s near Interstate Highway 5. It’s a favorite stopping place for RVing Snowbirds and is heavily used during their Spring and Fall migrations.

In other news…

Yesterday I drove all of about 20 miles to get to Manteca, First stop was to gas up at Costco for $169. Then a stop at the Salvation Army and Goodwill to seek used books…no luck. Then to Moose Lodge #1815 where I spent the night in their parking lot. Lots of friendly folks here. Today I’ll continue north for about 50 miles and spend the night somewhere on the Sacramento area.
