Good Friends Come To Visit… (GA15)

Mary is no longer available for RV traveling, but we remain good friends.
Because we have 4,000+ postings, I’ve invited her to continue posting entries on this blog.
I’m currently in my 22nd year of full-time RVing and my lifestyle is changing, For more info click Here

The motorhome is parked at Thousand Trails Palm Springs RV resort at Palm Desert, California. I expect to depart February 27th.

Since my RVing life is changing (see above), I’m starting to re-visit previously visited places. So rather than constantly re-blogging past entries, I’ve decided to do something different.

In 2012-2013, Mary and I did a 682 day, 12,679 miles in the motorhome and 8,000 miles in the Bronco, circumnavigation of the United States, which I called The Great Adventure. I called it so because other than my oldest granddaughter’s high school graduation in June in Connecticut, I didn’t know where we would be going or when we would be there!

So, unless I do something really different and unusual warranting a new blog entry, I’ll be posting entries from that trip.

This entry was posted February 9, 2012…

We’re still at the Golden Sun RV Resort in Apache Junction, Arizona where we will remain hanging out and visiting with friends. See my Blog entry for more information about this place…

Yesterday my good friends Aaron and Cheryl came to visit us. We had an enjoyable three-hour visit during which time we shared a nice breakfast at a local restaurant. They are avid dancers and come to Mesa, Arizona because there’s lot’s of dancing here during the Winter season. They qualify as my “most unusual” friends which means an abundance of laughter.

We last saw them at their home in Oregon last October. Because the RVing lifestyle is a mobile society, based on our current plans, we will not cross paths with them again until 2014. RVers never say “Good-Bye”, instead when we part company we say “See you down the road!”

(NOTE: This note was not in the blog posted February 9, 2012. Little did I know this was the last time I would see Aaron. One year and 17 days later on February 26, 2013 Aaron suffered a heart attack and passed away while doing what he loved to do…ballroom dancing. This Sunday marks the fourth anniversary of his passing. I still miss his friendship greatly. He was 72.)

Olympia, Washington – Day 2

The motorhom3 is parked in the parking lot of Podiatrist Dr. Donald G. Hovancsek who kindly allowed me to park for two nights across the street from the VFW Post #318. I’ll depart here later this morning.

I’m expecting to arrive at Mary’s home in central California, October 15th. While there, I’ll do minor repairs and major cleaning of the Bronco and motorhome.

Yesterday, I visited more friends…

The first stop was at my long-time hairdresser Keri Kaufmann when I lived in Olympia a long time ago. I always stop in unannounced just to surprise her. This year she surprised me by not being there. She’s currently on vacation in Barcelona, Spain. This photo was taken in 2014…

Then to the studios of TCTV, Thurston County Community Television, where I visited my friend Deb Vinsel, Manager for the last 25 years. She proudly shows their new digital control room which was all torn apart for the remodel when I visited her last year. From 1992-95, I produced and hosted 95 programs on TCTV at their old location on Limited Lane…

Then an enjoyable late afternoon meal with my long-time friend Shawn Newman. Shawn is a full-time Attorney and also is currently teaching five evening classes at St. Martin’s College. He’s a very funny guy, also very knowledgeable and interesting. That’s for a great visit Shawn!

I missed seeing my good friend’s Larry and Jan Seaberg as they are currently visiting Germany…

It does my heart good to visit with old friends. That’s the major problem with growing older…they start to disappear in death.  I’ve lost several good friends in recent years.  😦

Then an enjoyable happy-hour visit with the friendly folks at VFW Post #318.

I hope you enjoyed the photos.

Yesterday was a mostly cloudy and 66 degrees. Forecast for today is mostly cloudy/rain and 63 degrees.

Sixes, Oregon

Mary has safely returned home from a trip to Turkey with her 14-year-old grandson. I spoke with her on the phone yesterday. She was pleasantly exhausted and will spend the next several days resting, catching up on emails and unloading and editing the many photos she took on the trip. I expect her to catch up with me sometime in mid-May somewhere in Oregon.

Three days ago I drove the 168 miles from Blue Lake, California to Sixes, Oregon. The entire drive was on U.S. Highway 101, a road I have driven several times before. I’m parked in the yard of a friend. I’m planning to leave here tomorrow. Now that I’ve arrived here, I’m planning to slow my pace and spend the rest of May along the Oregon Coast.

Mary and I last visited Aaron and Cheryl here on October 3, 2011…

We last saw them on October 8, 2012 in Apache Junction, Arizona…

I first met Aaron and Cheryl in February, 1997 and we had been fast friends since that time. Sadly, Aaron passed away on February 26, 2013 doing what he really loved…dancing. He was truly a unique man…very funny and interesting. I miss his friendship greatly. Since that time Cheryl has had to carry on trying to adjust to widowhood. My visit with her here has been both trying and beneficial. The first day she cried a lot. The second day not quite as much. She has told me more than once…I’m living with my memories.

They were married 23 years. She has created a “memorial shelf” containing his ashes and other articles he liked…

She now lives alone with her two cats. Here she is with Charlie…Lucky was out and about when I took this photo…

She has finally gotten around to selling their 1996 36′ Elite motorcoach…

It’s in excellent condition and she’s only asking $9,900 for it. It you have an interest, you can email her at cccat47@gmail.com

Yesterday was cloudy/sunny at 59 degrees. Today’s forecast is cloudy with an occasional shower and 63 degrees. A bit cool, but delightful compared to the three days of mid-90’s I was in four days ago!

FROM BOSTON TO REVERE TO DARTMOUTH.

IMG_2249 (Copy)

I flew to Boston, arrived about peak commute time which is why we decided to get a hotel instead of crawling our way to our destination. As it was, it took over an hour to drive the seven miles from the airport to our hotel.

IMG_2254 (Copy)

That last-minute decision landed us in the “Motel From Hell” from a supposedly decent chain, Econo Lodge. We had a great laugh about how horrible it was, the front door to the lobby handle came off in Jim’s hand when he opened the door and the problems piled up after that. A friend of mine once got drunk and slept all night in a hotel in Vegas with a dead body under his mattress. That was in the 1960’s.  I was reminded of that incident because of the smell. Well, we survived. I was tired and slept well even so.

IMG_2257 (Copy)

In the morning, we met Jim’s high school friends, Bill and Loretta Gallagher. Bill and Jim like to tour their old neighborhood and remind themselves of all their teenage exploits.

IMG_2258 (Copy)

Jim is pointing at Bill and telling Loretta how he had the hot date with Perry Como’s niece so Bill was tailgating Jim and following him so they couldn’t get to the favorite necking spot without witnesses. So Jim tries to shake him with a quick  U turn in the middle of the road and Bill T boned his car.

IMG_2259 (Copy)

And then there was the time they got stopped by the DMV guys, who always hung out on this one corner and stopped cars to check for their licenses and registration. Bill was driving his Henry J.  Out piled 13 kids before Bill could get his registration out of the glove box.

IMG_2260 (Copy)

And then, another time, they were headed for a “rumble” with their chains and chocks when the clutch burned out in the old Henry J and probably saved their lives.  Oh, yeah. These guys lived the life of Fonzie.

IMG_2262 (Copy)

We cruised the old neighborhood, with the guys marveling that the old trailer park where Jim lived was still there. Jim lived in a 12 foot trailer from age 10 to 14 with his parents and younger brother.

IMG_2264 (Copy)

When he was in Jr. High, he crawled under the fence to Suffolk Downs, lied his age, and got a job grooming horses.

IMG_2266 (Copy)

We visited the track but the place was empty. The track was being groomed and no horses in sight.

IMG_2273 (Copy)

We stopped at the oldest Cemetery in the area. Bill pointed out where there was a building from the 1600’s on this site, an old house.  The City of Revere didn’t have the money to fix it up, a fact that still annoys him that they would tear down this historic building instead of finding a way to preserve it through alternative financing.

IMG_2276 (Copy)

The gates were closed and we couldn’t enter.

IMG_2277 (Copy)

Then we met Dolly and Arthur at Demaino’s restaurant, where everyone went for Pizza in the 1950’s.  Arthur is 85 and didn’t attend high school with the rest of them.

IMG_2279 (Copy)

Amazingly, Loretta and Dolly have known each other since they were three years old.

IMG_2284 (Copy)

The only one missing is their other partner in crime, Al Penta who lives in the state of Washington. But, they always hoist a glass and remember him when they get together.

IMG_2289 (Copy)

Our time was short and sweet and then we drove to Dartmouth to Jim’s cousin’s house, Donna and Bob Parker.  Donna and I are both foodies and she immediately brought us some home-made Portuguese cookies and zucchini bread.

IMG_2291 (Copy)

Then we had dinner at one of their favorite restaurants, Antonio’s. There was a sign on the wall, Martha Stewart was here, with her picture. I guess they took over the whole restaurant with their entourage. Anyway, the food is well-known to everyone in the area. Jim and I shared what is supposed to be a single entree, the Chicken Algarvia with chicken breast, shrimp and little neck clams.

IMG_2292 (Copy)

Bob and Donna shared their entree of Pork Ribatejana, with pork, shrimp, little neck clams in a broth with fried potatoes.

IMG_2299 (Copy)

And, like the entrees, the beers are huge. Bob chugs down the last swallow.  We’ll be staying here for five days. I dieted before arriving. You can guess why.
