The motorhome is parked at Shady Acres Mobile Home and RV Park in Yuma, Arizona. I expect to be here a while hiding out from the cold, wet weather. Average temperatures in January are high 69.6, low 47.6. In February, high 73.8, low 50.1. As nice as Yuma is, I wouldn’t want to be here in August. 🙂

2004 Central America trip…
This trip ended up being 343 days and 16,000+ miles through the back-country of Mexico, Belize, Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Panama. 11 rigs started the trip, within a week we broke into three smaller groups for ease of traveling. Only myself and one other rig went the full, pre-planned route. All the others dropped out for various reasons. All returned safely to the United States. I’m planning to show these photos, more or less, 10 a day, whenever I’m not doing something else deserving a blog entry. FINALLY, it must be remembered these photos are prior to my switching to digital in 2006. The films were developed during our trip and the lack of quality control sometimes is plainly evident.
Today…Panama (north-bound) #1…

All of today’s photo were taken at Colon, Panama, at the northern entrance of the Panama Canal where there is only one lock as oppose to three locks on the southern side.
Colon, without a doubt, is the ugliest, most run-down city we have been in on this trip. Nothing else even runs a close second. Our rigs are parked in a walled marina with armed guards. Borders and ports seem to have a natural tendency to attract a lower order of society…

In the below photo you can see the mule actually pulling this huge container ship through the lock…
The ship’s crew help keep the lines to the mules taught…
There are double gates on both ends of the lock…
Literally…there are only inches to spare between the ship and the side of the lock…
They really stack about one thousand containers aboard these huge ships…
Once clear of the final gate the ship progresses under its own power…
This ship now enters Gatun Lake on the way to the southern end of the canal about 50 miles distant…
The Atlantic Ocean is on the other side of the breakwater which protects the northern entrance to the Panama Canal…
Looking across the canal entrance to the City of Colon which is a very dangerous and dirty city…
