Gallup, New Mexico – Day 2 (GA119)

Mary is no longer available for RV traveling, but we remain good friends.
Because we have 4,000+ postings, I’ve invited her to continue posting entries on this blog.
I’m currently in my 22nd year of full-time RVing and my lifestyle is changing, For more info click Here

The motorhome is parked at Thousand Trails RV Resort in La Connor, Washington. I’ll depart here July 24th.

Since my RVing life is changing (see above), I’m starting to re-visit previously visited places. So rather than constantly re-blogging past entries, I’ve decided to do something different.

In 2011-2013, Mary and I did a 682 day, 12,679 miles in the motorhome and 8,000 miles in the Bronco, circumnavigation of the United States, which I called The Great Adventure. I called it so because other than my oldest granddaughter’s high school graduation in June in Connecticut, I didn’t know where we would be going or when we would be there!

So, unless I do something really different and unusual warranting a new blog entry, I’ll be posting entries from that trip.

This entry was posted May 22, 2012…

On our last full day of exploring Gallup, New Mexico, we visited four museums where we learned about the Navajo Code Talkers, a couple of Indian jewelry stores and the famous El Rancho Motel…Home to the Movie Stars.

In other news…

Now that we have completed our visit to Gallup, New Mexico…today we’ll move on to a new destination within the Navajo Nation. It’s the largest Indian Nation within the United States consisting of 27,000 square miles within New Mexico, Arizona and Utah.. Here’s the map…

In the next couple of weeks we may end up in locations where this is no Internet signal. Not to worry. As soon as we have one there will be another Blog entry.

I’m Just An Old Guy That Likes To Get High… (GA118)

This entry was posted May 21, 2012…

is what “Fergie” said to me 800 feet above the New Mexico desert.

Let me explain…

Yesterday when we pulled into the Red Rock Park campground near Gallup, New Mexico,, we ended up…unbeknownst to us in the middle of a beehive…kinda sorta.

For in this campground were a whole lot of people participating in something called the Route 66 Freedom Flight & Ride. Rather than me trying to explain it to you, the info is all in this link…
http://www.freedomrideandflight.com/

As you read in the above link, this activity involves both motorcyclists and hot air balloonists. We ended up camped in the middle of the hot air balloonists without the knowledge that this event was even taking place. If you are a regular follower of my Blog, you know we neither watch TV or read newspapers…so we do not know what is going on in the world. We did get to chatting with a couple of them and were informed the balloons would start taking off in an adjourning field at 6:30 AM.

Needless to say, we were there and this is what happened…

As always you may left click upon an image to see an enlarged view and then click once again to see an even larger view…

As we were told, the balloonists started arriving shortly after 6:00 AM…

Before to long the balloons began inflating…

The pilots began testing their burners…

And soon they started going aloft…

I found myself attracted to this group. The guy in the long white beard…”Fergie” aka Ken Furgerson, told me I could get as close as I wanted and take as many photos as I wanted, but…”Don’t step on the balloon!” Despite being very busy Fergie and crew were most cooperative in answering my many questions. If you remember, I’m an ex-engineer and I like to know how things work…

Nearby by other crews were also busy…

While Fergie and crew continued with their work…

Soon the shadows of the balloons started appearing on the canyon walls…

There were so many bright colors they almost hurt the eyes…

Fergie invited me to step up to the opening of the balloon to take photos of the inside…

Here’s a 180 degree panorama of the inside…

Soon Fergie ignited his burner to start the hot air into the balloon…

And soon the 105,000 cubic foot balloon was upright…

And soon Fergie and three passengers were on their way…but not before he invited Mary and I to ride along with the chase crew…

And there they go…

A close-up of them up there…

Soon other balloons were airborne…

Here’s a couple of balloons just clearing the east canyon wall…

Other balloons take off with Church Rock in the background…

Fergie and passengers are now the smallest balloon on the upper right…

About 45 minutes later in the company of the chase crew, we met Fergie at his landing spot. Much to our great surprise, Fergie invited us for a ride and we were soon airborne…

Soon we were 800 feet in the air looking towards Gallup, New Mexico to the west. This is about the time Fergie told us…”I’m just an old guy who likes to get high!”

Here’s a 180 degree panorama looking west at 800 feet above the desert floor…

Looking straight down the earth looks like the surface of the Moon…

Soon we will need to land before the upcoming ridge…

Fergie tells us he has only two controls…to go up or go down. Here we start our decent…

Getting close to the ground now…

After a very smooth landing the crew starts the closing down of the balloon…

Squeezing the air from the balloon is called milking…

Time to start stuffing the balloon into its storage bag…

Without knowing it, Fergie had managed to land next to a motocross race track which provided lots of dust to contend with…

Soon the balloon is almost into its storage bag…

And soon the whole balloon assembly is in its transport/storage trailer…

Fergie calls his balloon Itsa Touchie Subject and his crew wear embroidered shirts…

We were driven back to the campground and invited to attend a “ceremony”. It began with Fergie presenting a very humorous, yet factual, history of ballooning…

Of course, a ceremony requires liquid refreshment…

During the ceremony, we found out virgin balloon riders are called Turkeys…

Soon we found ourselves receiving our official balloon pins. Women get pinned very near their hearts…

And men get pinned, by the opposite sex, very near their brains!

Here’s a final photo of our ad-hoc ballooning crew…

In the end, Fergie estimated that 40-50 balloons were involved in the event and we enjoyed a 30 minute hot air balloon ride.

Thank you Fergie and fellow crew members for a most delightful experience!!!

We had planned to move on this morning, but because of our unexpected delightful day of yesterday…today we will do what we had planned yesterday…today…and leave tomorrow morning. Got it?

Running into unexpected and delightful experiences is yet another joy of the full-time RVing lifestyle!

Two Unusual Happenings…

The motorhome is now parked at the Paradise Casino in Winterhaven, California. Less than 1/2 mile away is the Colorado River and on the other side…the sunniest place on Earth…Yuma, Arizona. I’m here hanging out and enjoying the nice weather. I have several friends in the area. Mary is now expecting to rejoin me here in later January.

I’ve been coming to this Yuma, Arizona area coming on to 20 years and have thoroughly explored the area. Rather than go back to these various places and re-create the wheel, (unless I do something different and unusual) I’m electing to republish some of my earlier blog entries while I await Mary’s arrival.

Here’s a reprint of the blog entry from December 28 2013…

Two Unusual Happenings Yesterday…

Normally I do not like to close the curtains of my motorhome at night…kind of makes it feel like the inside of a coffin. But while here because of the cold nights and having to light the catalytic heater about 3:00 AM, I’ve been closing the curtains to help retain the heat inside the motorhome.

Yesterday morning when I opened the front curtains at 7:30 AM, this is what I saw…

As always you may left click upon an image to see an enlarged view and then click once again to see an even larger view…

A hot air balloon in the process of being inflated here in the casino parking lot. I’ve not seen this activity in the numerous times I have parked here. That’s my friend Randy’s travel trailer on the right…

DSC08107

A few moments later it was upright…

DSC08109

A closer view of the adding of the hot air from the gas burners…

DSC08115

Just about ready…

DSC08119

And away they go…

DSC08120

A closer view of the cockpit and passenger basket…

DSC08121

This time of the year the wind is out of the North, so they are heading South. I hope they know what they are doing as Mexico is only about 20 miles south of here….

DSC08126

I hope they have their passports with them!  🙂

Watching all of that activity reminded me of the time Mary and I got an unexpected hot air balloon ride in Gallup, New Mexico last year. You can read about that event by clicking this Blog link… http://wp.me/pDCku-4xW

The other unusual happening occurred later in the morning while Randy, his friend Anne and myself were taking our morning walk over and around the old Fort Yuma Crossing hill. Randy claimed the old railroad inspection station located at the base of the hill was located in Arizona and I said no way! Now, Randy is a well read guy and quickly laid down the challenge of a $5 bet. When we got back to our rigs I did some research on the Internet and much to both our surprises the legal boundary between Arizona and California was not quite where we thought it was. Nonetheless, can you tell who won the bet? I’m the guy on the right holding the newly won $5 in my hand…

DSC08127

The win was especially sweet as Randy is known as one to be tight-fisted about a dollar! How sweet it is!

You can read about the history of the Yuma Crossing by clicking this link… http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yuma_Crossing

End of blog reprint…

The photos, which I randomly selected, are from the states of Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Mississippi, Montana, New Mexico, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Texas, Tennessee, Washington and West Virginia (not shown in that order)…are mine. Yup, That’s me standing in front of the Post Office in Luckenbach, Texas…Y’all!
