The motorhome is parked at Thousand Trails RV Resort in La Conner, Washington. I’ll depart here August 13th.

 

 

 

Since my RVing life is changing (see above), I’m starting to re-visit previously visited places. So rather than constantly re-blogging past entries, I’ve decided to do something different.

  In 2011-2013, Mary and I did a 682 day, 12,679 miles in the motorhome and 8,000 miles in the Bronco, circumnavigation of the United States, which I called The Great Adventure. I called it so because other than my oldest granddaughter’s high school graduation in June in Connecticut, I didn’t know where we would be going or when we would be there!

So, unless I do something really different and unusual warranting a new blog entry, I’ll be posting entries from that trip.

After touring the grounds we enjoyed a delightful chicken and sausage gumbo for lunch. Then we attended a great Cajun Music jam session which I’ll tell you about soon.

We were greeted by second generation owner Kermit Miller and third generation follow-up Christian. They explained that they do not make the no-salt seasoning at that location which makes only barbecue sauce. They further explained that Jack Miller started in the restaurant business in 1941 and has been making seasonings and sauces since 1955. ARE YOU RELATED TO GENGHIS KAHN?

My great-grandmother started this quilt when she was 94 years old. It was her first time to use an electric sewing machine, her eyes were weary, and the quilt is very poorly sewn, and was unfinished. My mother handed it to me, and I asked my quilt guild friends at one time, could it be rescued? Their answer was, only keep it if it has memories for you. I’ve finally hemmed the border and yarn tied it, nothing of beauty, but useable. Quilters have many homilies about working on quilts, a lot of nostalgia induced from working with saved scraps of material, parts of your children’s clothing, Aunt Elsie’s wedding veil or a favorite blouse or dress. As I worked some magic crept in. I thought of the few encounters I had with her. She spoke a jumble of French mixed in with her English. I could see her beautiful smile when she picked up my older sister’s first child, and hugged her. She would touch my cheeks with soft, soft hands. I traced her work closely with my hands and thought about her. It crossed my mind that she touched this quilt, handled it, and it has never been washed. Could a person feel the DNA from a past great-grandmother?  Silly, I suppose but I got emotionally involved with this homely quilt.

My mother’s family was French. When she did an extensive genealogy, she found out that there was some American Indian blood in her family, which explained the hawk nosed Indian features of some of my uncles.

Speaking of features, when I was growing up, my dad used to call me his “little Mongolian” because I had very slanted, Asian looking eyes. One of my brothers and my oldest daughter have that same feature, except, as we aged, our eyes have become more occidental.

Now, a genealogist I know, red-haired and blue-eyed, had serious burns and went to a plastic surgeon. He told her, I see you have Asian or African background from the way your scars rope.

She told him it couldn’t be, she had traced her ancestry into the 1600’s and had a clear view of who she was.

Segue forward to DNA ancestry testing which is very popular and affordable right now. The plastic surgeon was right. She knew there was a family story that the grandson of Genghis Kahn, Kublai Khan had invaded their Polish village in the 1200’s. From the British Royal Museum, she got a map of Khan’s conquests and sure enough, their village of Besko was invaded. Kahn pillaged and burned his way across much of Asia and Europe, killing the men and impregnating as many women as he could. They say now that one out of 200 men are related to Kahn. Hmm!  Interesting. Maybe my Dad knew something I didn’t and I could be related to Genghis Kahn.  Guess it is time to get a DNA test.

Chicot State Park, Louisiana – Day 5

The motorhome is parked at Chicot State Park near Ville Platte, Louisiana. We are scheduled to depart here today.

Yesterday we took the Bronco and drove around some area back roads and because we need to do some grocery shopping, we ended up back in Ville Platte about 10 miles south of our parking location.

One of the places we ended up visiting is Teet’s Food Store which enjoys a reputation for the best smoked meats in the area.

Lawrence “Teet” DeVille founded the business in 1995. We had the pleasure of meeting him. He speaks with a heavy French accent when he told us about his business. The business is now under the ownership of son Chris who has worked there for over 25 years. Third generation Luke also works there but was not there when we visited. They took us out back and showed us the smokehouse that has been in operation since 1974…

They use oak wood to start a fire in this container, then wheel it into the smokehouse.,,

Depending on how much meat is in the smokehouse, the process takes 6-8 hours…

Yesterday we waited out the weather forecast of severe thunderstorms with large hail and significant risk of tornadoes. Fortunately, the tornado warnings ended at 7:00 PM with none occurring. We did receive some heavy rain squalls and some wind.

Every Thursday the American Legion members go into the post kitchen and cook up a meal. Yesterday it was Jambalaya and yummy…

Lake Arthur is located along Louisiana Highway 14…we’re still in French-speaking country…

This is Main Street Lake Arthur…

We were told not to leave Lake Arthur until we experienced a Bloody Mary at the LA Bar. Mary drinks them, I do not. She said it was unusual and tasty…

We started to stroll along the waterfront…got as far as the old Oak tree before a rain squall drove us back to the Bronco…

A good portion of our day was spent reading our books. Our departure plans remain undecided at this time. Another enjoyable day in Louisiana!
