An Electrical Modification On My Ford Bronco II…

The motorhome is parked at Thousand Trails Thunderbird RV Resort along the bank of the Skykomish River in Monroe, Washington. I’ve been here a number of times over the past years and always enjoy it here. My scheduled departure date is July 8th.

Mary is at home tending to personal matters…home maintenance, family, friends, rentals, etc..  She has made her flight reservations to meet me July 29th in Bellingham, Washington.

In the early 1980’s, the first automobile computers started to appear. On 22,000,000 Ford vehicles between 1983 and 1995, it was known as a TFI (thin-film Ignition) Module. Ford initially mounted them on the backside of the distributor where they got very hot and resulted in the engine to stop running without any notice. After the engine cooled down, the engine would once again run…until the next time. It made one very hesitant to go anywhere for fear of when it would happen once again. A class action lawsuit resulted which you can read about by clicking this link… http://www.autosafety.org/ford-tfi-module-national-class-settlement

Ford ultimately relocated the unit to another location in the engine compartment to satisfy the issue. I had had the problem with my previous 1984  Ford Bronco II and knew instantly what was going on when it happen to me for the first time on my current 1986 Ford Bronco II a few days ago. After about 30 minutes of cooling I was able to restart the Bronco.

I’m lucky it happened here in Monroe because I could call my friend and cracker-jack mechanic Kenny Coleman. He came over yesterday and changed the location of the TFI Module on my Bronco. The new unit with tax ran me $96. The entire project took two hours and Kenny assured me I should have no further problems with an overheated TFI Module.

The TFI Module behind the distributor is very difficult to access…

Here’s the culprit. Kenny told me the brown area on the left is where it got really hot causing the internal electronic failure…

DSC00766

Now mounted on a piece of aluminum angle to act as a heat sink, the unit is mounted atop the air conditioning housing. Kenny said the combination of the aluminum heat sink and unrestricted air flow for cooling will resolve any future problems…

Having a vehicle that could unexpectedly stall at any given moment is not a good thing. It’s nice to nice that potential problem has been removed on my Bronco.

I HOPE YOU ENJOYED THE PHOTOS.

Yesterday was a cloudy/sunny day at 72 degrees. Forecast for today is cloudy/sunny and 79 degrees.

Enjoying nice weather is another joy in the life of a full-time RVer!

Working On the Motorhome – Day 3

The motorhome is parked in Mary’s yard at her home at Murphys, California. I expect to be here until shortly after Thanksgiving cleaning and doing minor work on both the motorhome and Bronco. After our 682 day journey, they are both ready for some attention.

The sunny, mid-to-high 70’s weather continues. Forecast remains the same through November 4th.

Now that all my outside work is done on the motorhome and Bronco,  I’ve shifted my attention to the inside of the motorhome, meaning…start the interior cleaning.

Yesterday’s activities had a little deviation. Since cooler temperatures are in the forecast in the next few days, first thing yesterday we spent about an hour moving dried firewood next to Mary’s house where it soon will be needed. Shortly after Mary took the first photo, I traded the barrow in for one twice as large with a larger, wider front tire…

As always you may left click upon an image to see an enlarged view and then click once again to see an even larger view…

DSC07496

Now back to the motorhome. Our lower sliding window on the dinette window was not running in its rubber track properly. We played with it for a while, but could not get it where it should be without damaging the rubber. So, I hit it hard with the WD40 and it now slides fairly freely…

DSC07491

Then I changed a burned-out rear backup light on the Bronco…

DSC07497

The lower rear running light on the motorhome was out. Close examination showed the plastic lens case was cracked and water had gotten inside and corroded the bulb connection and shorted it out. It took a while to clean out the corrosion and the bulb now lights…

DSC07500

Re-installing the plastic lens case, I put some adhesive on the crack which ran from the left screw to the top of the lens. All is well now…

DSC07504

Finally, moving the outer hanger bracket on the motorhome exhaust pipe about two inches eliminated an annoying rattle…

DSC07506

Slowly but surely, I’m chipping away at my to do list. More cleaning today.

Since our accident about 1.5 years ago, I now suffer from diminished energy/stamina. I can now work only 2-3 hours a day before I get tired and have to quit. I know that these current Blog entries are not particularly exciting reading, but they do reflect the daily activities of a full-time RVer. Gotta stop and clean and work on the vehicles once in a while!

In other news…

Five years ago today, Mary and I had our first face-to-face meeting…a five hour brunch. Like they say, the rest is history! It’s been a fun and interesting five years!  🙂

Enjoying nice weather is another joy in the life of a full-time RVer!

Working On The Motorhome – Day 1

The sunny, mid-to-high 70’s weather continues. Forecast remains the same through November 7th.

Now that all my outside work is done on the motorhome and Bronco, yesterday was time to move my attention to the inside of the motorhome, meaning…start the interior cleaning. In order to get a through cleaning, I removed the screen door then all of the window screens and took them along side Mary’s house for a scrubbing and shower bath…

As always you may left click upon an image to see an enlarged view and then click once again to see an even larger view…

First  a scrub down with a soapy sponge and rag…

DSC07463

I used a plant watering nozzle for the rinsing which provide a good water flow without damaging water pressure for a thorough rinse…

DSC07466

After the rinse bath, I dried the door with a small hand towel. Then followed the same procedure with the six window screens and set them in the sun to dry…

DSC07471

To insure complete drying, I left them in the sun all day and overnight. I’ll re-install them today.

Working On The Bronco – Day 2

The motorhome is parked in Mary’s yard at her home at Murphys, California. I expect to be here until shortly after Thanksgiving cleaning and doing minor work on both the motorhome and Bronco. After our 682 day journey, they are both ready for some attention.

The sunny, mid-to-high 70’s weather continues. Forecast remains the same through November 1st.

Yesterday was another work-on-the-Bronco day. This time it was to clean the interior. First thing was to unload most of the stuff from what I refer to as my rolling storage bin…

As always you may left click upon an image to see an enlarged view and then click once again to see an even larger view…

DSC07454

Then vacuum thoroughly, clean the dust off of the dashboard and then clean all the interior windows…

Once clean, load all the stuff back in…

DSC07460

The road of life is a dusty one! I know this is not particularly exciting reading, but it’s all part of the daily life of a full-time RVer. I’m most pleased the weather has been cooperating for the accomplishment of my outside work.

Forecast remains the same through October 30th.

Yesterday was a work-on-the-Bronco day. The bug shield had loosened up and was threatening to fall off. I drilled some new holes, replaced all the old screws with new ones and it is now firmly attached once again…

As always you may left click upon an image to see an enlarged view and then click once again to see an even larger view…

In addition I topped off the coolant and windshield washer fluid, replaced a couple of burnt-out light bulbs and fixed a binding, squeaking door. I’ll do more work on the Bronco today.

Historic Silver City, New Mexico…

Yesterday I departed Silver City, New Mexico after a nice 13 day visit. Okay…I could have done nicely without having to rebuild my 1986 Ford Bronco II transmission. But…if you have to breakdown…Silver City is a good place to do it. Thank you again Moose Lodge #1718 for your hospitality.

Historic downtown Silver City. New Mexico is very clean and has lots of nice old buildings including the Silver City Museum detailing the Big Ditch.

I was so busy while there…I didn’t have a chance to show you some photos of the historic downtown area. So here they are…
