Engle, New Mexico… An Unusual Ghost Town (GA75)

Mary is no longer available for RV traveling, but we remain good friends.
Because we have 4,000+ postings, I’ve invited her to continue posting entries on this blog.
I’m currently in my 22nd year of full-time RVing and my lifestyle is changing, For more info click Here

The motorhome is parked at Mary’s home in Murphys, California. I expect to leave here May 8th. While here, I’ll be doing routine maintenance, repairs and general cleaning.

Since my RVing life is changing (see above), I’m starting to re-visit previously visited places. So rather than constantly re-blogging past entries, I’ve decided to do something different.

In 2011-2013, Mary and I did a 682 day, 12,679 miles in the motorhome and 8,000 miles in the Bronco, circumnavigation of the United States, which I called The Great Adventure. I called it so because other than my oldest granddaughter’s high school graduation in June in Connecticut, I didn’t know where we would be going or when we would be there!

So, unless I do something really different and unusual warranting a new blog entry, I’ll be posting entries from that trip.

This entry was posted April 9, 2012…

Yesterday I wrote about the Jornada Del Muerto…the Journey of the Dead. Here’s the link in case you missed it…

While there, I drove the one-half mile further to the east..to the ghost town of Engle…

Using two of the Google Earth images from yesterday will help you relate to Engle’s location…

As always you may left click upon an image to see an enlarged view and then click once again to see an even larger view…

There are a lot of ghost towns in the Southwest. They tend to all be somewhat similar…being founded on precious metals finds (e.g. gold, silver) and contain ruins of some of the old buildings that used to be there. Not Engle…it’s different. It was founded on Commerce and there are no old building ruins.

So…what is in Engle? Not Much. Here are some photos that I took…

In this first photo, the building on the right is the headquarters building of the Armandis Ranch, one of several ranches owned by Ted Turner…

Next looking north upon the railroad track…

Next a view of the intersection looking east…

A view of the intersection looking west…

And finally all of the seven mailboxes are in one location. I wonder how often they get mail as the nearest town is Truth or Consequences…17 miles to the west…

I found this link that gives a good historical description of Engle…

It was an interesting…although a short visit…to see this unusual ghost town.

Enjoying nice weather is another joy in the life of a full-time RVer!

The red dot on the below map shows my approximate location in the State of California. You may double left-click the map to make it larger…

Enjoying 65-75 degree temperatures with low humidity most of the year is a primary joy in the RVing lifestyle!

Elephant Butte Lake, New Mexico…

In yesterday’s Blog entry I wrote about Elephant Butte Dam which created Elephant Butte Lake in 1916. If you missed that entry, you can read it by clicking this link…
http://wp.me/pDCku-4by

Today I’ll describe the lake it created. Justice can only be done in one of two ways…by airplane or Google Earth. Since I do not own an airplane and I’m not about to rent one…we’ll use the magic of Google Earth.

As always you may left click upon an image to see an enlarged view and then click once again to see an even larger view...

In this first view you get to see the lake, directly from above, as seen from an altitude of 38 miles…

In the above image you can see my current location of Truth or Consequences, New Mexico as marked by TOC. The location of the dam is also shown. The lake is also known as the Elephant Butte Reservoir which you can read about by clicking this Wikipedia link…
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elephant_Butte_Reservoir

The lake is New Mexico’s largest body of water at 40 miles long with 200 miles of shoreline. You can read about other details of the lake in this link…
http://www.recreation.gov/recAreaDetails.do?contractCode=NRSO&recAreaId=100

This next Google Earth image shown from an angle gives a better perspective of the “big picture”…

In addition to the Rio Grande River and the dam locations, I’m also showing you the relative locations of two Blog entries from a few days ago…first is the Laguna del Muerto from the entry about the Journey of the Dead…
http://wp.me/pDCku-49n

and second is the entry about Engle, New Mexico…An Unusual Ghost Town…
http://wp.me/pDCku-49e

As you might have guessed, the lake has huge recreational use and value. Directly to the northeast of Truth or Consequences is the rather unremarkable city of Elephant Butte…population in the 2000 census of 1,368. The major portion of the city’s business population is made up of RV and boat storage facitities…folks store them during the week and come and play on the weekends.
