Oakland, New Jersey Day 1 (GA508)

Mary is no longer available for RV traveling, but we remain good friends.
Because we have 5,000+ postings, I’ve invited her to continue posting entries on this blog.
I’m currently in my 23rd year of full-time RVing and my lifestyle is changing, For more info click Here

——————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————-

The motorhome is parked at Mary’s home in Murphys, California. I’m planning to depart November 26th.

Since my RVing life is changing (see above), I’m starting to re-visit previously visited places. So rather than constantly re-blogging past entries, I’ve decided to do something different.

This entry was posted June 1, 2013…

Yesterday I drove the motorhome the about 100 miles from Allentown, Pennsylvania to Oakland, New Jersey. Most of the drive was on Interstate Highways 78 and 287 with LOTS of traffic and MANY 18-wheelers. While the speed limit was 65…most vehicles zipped along at 75-80 miles per hour. It’s a downright dangerous situation and very stressful driving. Unfortunately when you are in this part of the United States the other roadways are very narrow, congested and very slow going. My driving technique is to stay to the right, maintain about a 60 mile per hour speed and hopefully avoid any problems.

We are parked in a beautiful park-like setting at Elks Club #2167. Here are some of the photos that I took when we arrived in the blistering heat…

About 4:00 PM we were joined by my friends Jim and Ginny Palumbo whom I have known since 1976. They live about a five-minute drive away. We went to an Italian restaurant for supper…

About 5:30 this morning I took a walk around the grounds…while it was cooler..and took a few more photos. Mary really likes this place. This Elks Club is essentially closed for lack of membership. That’s really sad because it’s such a pretty place. So, it’s also quite quiet and peaceful here considering we are in such a heavily populated area.

I then unhooked the Bronco to drive the Bronco the about five miles to the Patsy Cline Crash Site Memorial location. Patsy Cline was a very famous country-western music singer who was only 30 years old when she died. You can read about her and the crash by clicking this Wikipedia link…

Once you reach the parking area you have to walk down an incline for about 300 yards. Mary wasn’t up to the return climb so she waited for me at the top…

Upon return to the Elks club we went inside and met a bunch of very friendly people. So much so that when we exited two hours later we declared Elks club #2156 in Camden, Tennessee…The Friendliest Elks Club In The United States!

We will move along further down the road later this morning.

SONORA ELKS CLUB OPEN HOUSE

DSC05928 (Copy)

I missed most of the Christmas events I usually attend so I was determined to get to my Elks Club Open House. The food was excellent.

DSC05930 (Copy)

The bar was suitably busy. The bartender is a member volunteer, and he had his hands full.

DSC05931 (Copy)

Everyone seemed happy and full of Christmas spirit. The guy with the smile is just recently engaged to be married. His fiance is not in the picture.

DSC05938 (Copy)

Our club is lucky to have Lynn, a piano player who always provides music for every event, every dinner. Any club would be lucky to have a guy like him.  A fairly new member revealed her exceptional voice and sang beautifully.

DSC05935 (Copy)

Because I travel so much, I forget peoples names. I recognize faces and people who have been welcoming and nice to me.

DSC05939 (Copy)

Our club is very active and you look around and figure, someone put a lot of time and effort into decorating our hall.

DSC05934 (Copy)

And, while I forget names, I never forget my sponsor, he goes by the honiker “Skip Ahoy”. Also an officer of the club. He and his wife contribute a great amount of time and effort to Elks, and I admire them both.

DSC05936 (Copy)

My table mate is also a newer member and an officer. He used to be a computer tech. He said “I got tired of fixing people’s computer problems, so now I teach at Columbia College and show people how to fix their own.”  His wife and daughter left early. He stayed for the clean-up.

DSC05941 (Copy)

It had been awhile since I drove over the river to Tuolumne County.  The reservoir is shockingly low, down below the foundation attachment to the bridge.

DSC05943 (Copy)

Visible is the straight line of the old road that took the driver to a small bridge over the river then the road climbed back up to the other side. The canyon was flooded by Melones Dam under protest from the locals who liked their wild and scenic river. I enjoyed the twisty road and the canyon, and most of all river rafting. Those things are gone, but the reservoir certainly provided valuable water to communities below us with water they wouldn’t have had.

DSC05944 (Copy)

The tops of once live trees stick up above the surface of the water and the whole canyon is now unsafe for boating. We do complain about the rain because it is wet and cold, but we don’t complain too hard. We need that rain for the snow pack and hope we have a normal year.

Today, I’m planning to hunker down and get some Christmas cards out. I know-it is last minute but this has been one of the busiest times at home, with friends in need, and more on my plate than normal. We are promised a non-rain day, with some clouds and a bit of sun. Nice.

Oakland, New Jersey

The motorhome is currently parked at Mary’s home in Murphys, California. My current departure date is scheduled for December 1st. Eight days and counting!

During this remaining time I’ll be attending to cleaning of the motorhome in addition to assisting Mary with her activities. This item is not particularly exciting to write about…so…instead I’ll be showing Picasa Web Albums from our 682 day, 2011-2013 circumnavigation of the United States. It was Mary’s second circumnavigation and the sixth for myself.

Unless we do something unusual, this Blog will feature a photo album from the circumnavigation and will change daily. So come back tomorrow.

To read about today’s photo album location, click this link…http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oakland,_New_Jersey

CLICK ON THE BELOW PHOTO. ONCE YOU ARRIVE AT THE PHOTO ALBUM, SIMPLY CLICK “SLIDESHOW” AND ENJOY!

Oakland, New Jersey

I HOPE YOU ENJOYED THE PHOTOS.

The cataract surgery of my right eye was conducted on October 9th and my left eye on November 6th. Both eyes are now at 20/20. The only remaining item left (other than eye drops until early December) is a visit to the optometrist to be fitted for reading glasses at the VA Hospital in Livermore, California on November 25th.

Yesterday was a cloudy day with rain and 56 degrees. Forecast for today is partly cloudy and 59 degrees.

ANACORTES EAGLES BARBEQUE FUNDRAISER.

DSC08211 (Copy)

Anacortes Eagles Club puts on a yearly fundraiser barbeque where they serve salmon, chicken or ribs, barbequed on these huge barrel pits. The cooks were taking a bit of a break.

DSC08114 (Copy)

The women bake home-made pies, beans, coleslaw and serve you. They close  a section of the street to set up their cues and tables.

DSC08113 (Copy)

When in the West, eat salmon. Done to perfection. Our plate was heavy. I believe we were dished out a half-pound of silver salmon. Whoever cleans it, didn’t leave a bone. I guess I was too hungry to take a picture, light breakfast, no lunch. We went inside to eat. We managed some blueberry and cheery/rhubarb pie, too. Good stuff.

DSC08115 (Copy)

Jim’s Eagle’s Aerie closed about two months ago. He made arrangements  to switch his membership to Anacortes Club. People here are very friendly. I took a picture of this unusual rocking chair. It was built and carved and donated by a long ago member.

DSC08120 (Copy)

We walked around town taking pictures of murals that Anacortes is known for. I’ll publish them and some art tomorrow. Finally got an art fix. On the way, we met this sweet little papillon.

DSC08118 (Copy)

I swear, when she saw the camera she stopped and posed for me. Her owner says she does that because she is a show dog. Traveling like I do, I enjoy other people’s pets and no longer have a dog or cat of my own.

DSC08182 (Copy)

I spent two hours before our Eagles dinner in the library, catching up on some business stuff when we first got to town because our signal is so slow in the park. But, I can’t pass an Elks Club, since I’m a member from Sonora.  The people in this Elks Club were also very friendly. Three murals graced the club walls.

DSC08183 (Copy)

They commissioned this one to honor a couple who raised more money for children through their club, than any club in Washington by making and selling Jam. Arlitta Pitcher and Stan Jewell. He is 89 years old, now, and they no longer attend.

DSC08185 (Copy)

And, they honored member Carl Frantz, a Sea Scout, who brought them fish, and boats, and apparently a lot of fun.

DSC08184 (Copy)

This gentleman was a band leader that for years played the Elks major dances. Not many clubs, it seems, have those big dances any more. His name is on that bass fiddle but I couldn’t read it in my editing program. Sorry sir!

Weather was beautiful, with a full day, in a friendly town. Life is good.

Kalispell, Montana

Yesterday I drove the motorhome the 35 miles from Glacier National Park to Kalispell, Montana.

We continued traveling along U.S.Highway 2 West.

After my morning walk, I grabbed my camera to get this pre-sunrise photo of Lake MacDonald…

Both of the museums in Kalispell are closed on Sunday, so because of the short drive time yesterday, we rounded out our day by grocery shopping, cleaning the refrigerator, defrosting the freezer, computer work and reading.

Yesterday was a terrible weather day. 87 degrees…humidity still far to high. Today’s forecast 80 degrees with a couple of thunderstorms. YUCKITTY!

We’ll continue our westward travel later this morning.
