RV Museum To Continue To Exist… (GA76)

Mary is no longer available for RV traveling, but we remain good friends.
Because we have 4,000+ postings, I’ve invited her to continue posting entries on this blog.
I’m currently in my 22nd year of full-time RVing and my lifestyle is changing, For more info click Here

The motorhome is parked at Thousand Trails Lake Minden RV Resort in Nicolaus, California. I’m scheduled to leave here May 26th.

Since my RVing life is changing (see above), I’m starting to re-visit previously visited places. So rather than constantly re-blogging past entries, I’ve decided to do something different.

In 2011-2013, Mary and I did a 682 day, 12,679 miles in the motorhome and 8,000 miles in the Bronco, circumnavigation of the United States, which I called The Great Adventure. I called it so because other than my oldest granddaughter’s high school graduation in June in Connecticut, I didn’t know where we would be going or when we would be there!

So, unless I do something really different and unusual warranting a new blog entry, I’ll be posting entries from that trip.

The Travel Log…

One month ago yesterday Mary and I visited the Avenue Of the Giants in the Humboldt Redwood Forest in Weott, California. In case you missed that Blog entry…here’s the link…
http://wp.me/pDCku-2wS

During our drive that day we visited the Humboldt Information and interpretive Center…where we saw a most unusual RV made from a single Redwood Tree…hollowed out and mounted on a Nash Quad Chassis. Here are some photos that I took…

In all my years of RVing…including my visit to the RV Museum last year in Elkhart, Indiana…I have never seen an RV quite like this one.

Here are some interesting facts about this RV from the brochure we got at the Visitor’s Center…

—————————————————————————————————————–

It is the largest single piece of hewn timber in the world.

It is the creation of one man, Charles Kellogg who hollowed it out with axe and adz.

It has kitchenette, folding lavatory, toilet, clothespress, 12 lockers, folding double bed, stove, dining table, bookcase, dresser, electric lights, running water, guest room with single bed, lockers, etc…

The walls, ceiling and floors are all one piece.

It weighs six tons.

This particular log is about 4,800 years old.

The Nash Quad Chassis pulls on all four wheels and has front and rear steering.

It is a most unusual and interesting RV

Here are some links which will provide you with more information about Charles Kellogg and his Travel Log…

In other news…

Yesterday…here at Mary’s home…it was 29 degrees at 7:30 AM when I took this photo of her porch rail and distant tree on the left…covered with frost…

The day continued on to be sunny and 51 degrees. Mary and I spent some time in the motorhome going through and cleaning up/out some of the interior storage cabinets. 20 days until my departure to the sunny and warm south land.

RV Trip Favorite Photos #374-386

Jim says:

While Mary and I are taking care of business here at her home…there is little “new stuff” to Blog about daily. So I’ve decided to share with you some of my favorite photos from our recent 298 day, 16,000+ mile RV trip around the United States.

Since scenery and people snapshot-type photos require little special photography skills…and being limited by the abilities of my digital camera…I none the less took some photos that I really liked. They are presented in no special order of favoritism. If you desire to see more associated photos and information about this area, you will need to find this date in the archive files of this Blog.

Today’s photos were taken at the RV Museum in Elkhart, Indiana on August 25, 2010……

Mobile Mansions

Jim says:

Yesterday I finished reading Mobile Mansions with a sub-title of Taking Home Sweet Home On The Road by Douglas Keister. I bought this book while at the RV Museum in Elkhart, Indiana a few days ago.

Picture

It’s 160 pages with lots of photographs and text about the history of Motorhomes and presents photos/information about many of the most unusual motorhomes from the past. If you like RV’s and enjoy reading about them, I highly recommend this book to you. I paid $25.00 for this book, you can buy it at Amazon for $18.21 plus shipping. here’s the link…

Editorial Reviews
Product Description
What do Henry Ford, Thomas Edison, Mae West, Howard Hughes, John Madden, the Partridge Family, Ken Kesey, The Who, and Barbie have in common? Each had a home on wheels-be it an old converted school bus, a massive RV cruiser, or elegant house car. These celebrity motorhomes are only the frosting on the cake in Douglas Keister’s entertaining and informative new book Mobile Mansions.
From the Inside Flap
Mobile Mansions takes you on a captivating exploration of homes on wheels-everything from early diminutive camp cars to modern-day diesel-belching, lumbering leviathans complete with saunas, balconies, and gourmet kitchens. From the eclectic to the exquisite, the luxurious to the rare, this detailed RV guide showcases the diversity of some of the most lovingly restored RVs on the road today.
In this reference for pop culture connoisseurs as well as RV-loving enthusiasts, Keister documents an amazing range of vehicles, including small camp cars from the 1920s, house cars from the 1930s, campers from the 1950s, and finally modern-day motorhomes that first appeared in the 1960s. Well-known brands like Winnebago, GMC, and Travco are featured as well as one-of-a-kind vehicles like the Lamsteed Kampcar, built by Anheuser Busch, the Zeppelin House Car, and Buckminster Fuller’s Dymaxion car.
Also included in this ultimate guide to RV nostalgia are descriptions, as well as a sampling of photos, of the RVs of cultural icons: Henry Ford, Thomas Edison, Mae West, Howard Hughes, John Madden, the Partridge Family, Ken Kesey, The Who, and Barbie. Each had a home on wheels-be it an old converted school bus, massive RV cruiser, or elegant house car.
Entertaining and informative, Keister offers a fun-to-read, informative history of the recreational vehicle illustrated with luscious full-color images, rare vintage photographs, and a sampling of period advertisements. Step inside a wide variety of mobile mansions and feel yourself swept up in a wave of wistfulness, rediscovered adventuresome, and a longing to hit the road.

In other news…
Mary and I are still in Decatur, Illinois. Yesterday we did some shopping and got rid of Mary’s latest recycle collection. We also went to a local 1800’s festival. It was too hot for me so I stood under a shade tree while Mary walked around. One more day here and then we move on tomorrow.
