Mary remains at home in California tending to medical issues.

The motorhome is still parked at the Fraternal Order of Eagles Airee #4271. I expect to be here for a couple more days.

Yesterday I drove the about eight miles to the Buddy Holly Center near downtown Lubbock. The main gallery was very nicely done containing a lot of memorabilia from Buddy’s younger days. However…no photography was allowed. Boo on them  I just do not see what the big deal is with the no photography bit is. I saw nothing in here, that if I took a photo of it and shared it with you, that would make the world come to an end. There were a number of signs reminding you of the photography and video ban. Interesting…

From what I’ve read on the Internet it’s all because of his widow Maria Elana. She owns the rights to his name, image, trademarks, and other intellectual property. It all appears she still profits financially 53 years after his death.

Here’s the official website link…
http://www.buddyhollycenter.org/

Here is a website link about his ex-wife. It states that she “did not attend the funeral and has never visited the grave site”. She also claims that she is protecting his image. There are a number of websites about his widow. Just put Maria Elana Holley in your Internet search box, read for yourself and draw your own conclusions. Interesting…

Yesterday I drove the about 11 miles to the Silent Wings Museum…where they present the story of the World War II Glider Program. If you are unfamiliar with the role gliders played in World War II, this informational link will bring you up to speed…
http://www.exploringthenorth.com/gliders/history.html

I spent an enjoyable 1.5 hours there. Besides the fully restored glider, the was a 15 minute video and lots of World War II memorabilia.

There were almost 14,000 of the gliders built by 16 different companies. Ford Motor Company built the largest amount…almost 5,000 of them. Ford was the lowest bidder at just under $16,000. That figure adjusted for inflation from 1942 would be about $225,000 today.

Santa Fe has a population of about 68,000 and is at about 7,000 feet of elevation. You can read all about this city by clicking this Wikipedia informational link…

Yesterday I drove the Bronco the about one mile to the state capital building also known as The Roundhouse because of its unusual design. It is also an art museum all by its self. I’ve read where it houses more than 600 pieces valued at more than 7 million dollars.

Here’s a link about the building from the Santa Fe travel guide website…
http://santafe.org/New_Mexico_State_Capitol/index.html

Here’s a short YouTube video about the building…
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pc1R7QvwjuY

Photography was a bit of a challenge with areas of low light, but the biggest difficulty was that most of the pieces were framed in glass or covered by plexiglass which makes for a lot of light reflection problems.

Yesterday I drove the Bronco the about 15 miles south of Santa Fe to the Bonanza Creek Movie Ranch where dozens of movies have been filmed since 1955  including one of my very favorites…Lonesome Dove. In addition numerous TV shows, commercials, music videos, magazine and catalog photo shoots have been accomplished here.

Here’s their website link…
http://www.bonanzacreekranch.com/

Here’s a link identifying some of the movies made here…
http://www.imdb.com/search/title?endings=on&&locations=Bonanza%20Creek%20Ranch%20-%2015%20Bonanza%20Creek%20Lane,%20Santa%20Fe,%20New%20Mexico,%20USA&&heading=18;with+locations+including;Bonanza%20Creek%20Ranch%20-%2015%20Bonanza%20Creek%20Lane,%20Santa%20Fe,%20New%20Mexico,%20USA

Bonanza Creek Ranch is a working cattle ranch, visited by appointment only. It is distinctive because unlike on a typical movie set, the buildings here are real structures and not one-sided façades. It is set on 12,000 beautiful acres.

Our tour guide was Jack Caffery who has worked on this ranch for 33 years. During the 2.5 hour tour he shared lots of stories about the movie stars he has worked with and funny happenings during some of the productions. He has also been in many movies as an extra. If you remember Lonesome Dove, he played Clara Allen’s faithful Mexican worker, Cholo. He is very knowledgeable and personable. I got to ride in his vehicle with him…just he and I…so I got a lot of extra stories. If you are in the Santa Fe area, I highly recommend his tour to you.
