Yesterday I drove the motorhome 113 miles from Murphys to Nicolaus, California.

After some shopping at Costco for gas and groceries, I stopped to have the motorhome washed…

My normal stop is at the 49er Truck Stop which has two wash bays. With several vehicles in front of me meant at least a three-hour wait, so I passed. I’ll find another place further down the road to get the motorhome washed…

Harlingen, Texas – Day 18

The motorhome is parked at Tropic Winds RV Resort and is scheduled to be here until January 10th.

Yesterday Mary and I took the Bronco for a tour of the Rio Grande Valley since she has never been here before. By time we got back to the motorhome we had covered 160 miles.

As always you may left click upon an image to see an enlarged view and then click once again to see an even larger view…

Along the way we saw lots of fertile soil with green stuff growing…

020

and grapefruit trees…

023

First stop was at the old Hildago Pump Station that was used for many years to pump water from the Rio Grande River to irrigate the growing fields. It operated from 1909 to 1983. The station was closed on a Saturday so we didn’t get to take the tour. You can read about it by clicking this link…

Also at the site was a World Birding Center which you can read about by clicking this link…

007

It was so cold we didn’t try to catch a photo of the many birds we could hear but we got these nice flower photos…

010

011

Being right on the Rio Grande River, the Border Patrol was to be seen everywhere…

006

A few more miles down the road we stopped at the La Lomita Chapel which was also closed on a Saturday. You can read about it by clicking this link…
http://www.nps.gov/nr/travel/tx/tx15.htm

018

About one mile down the road is the remnants of an old mission on the grounds of a now Catholic Academy. Of course the gates were locked…

021

By then it was time for lunch. We stopped at the small El Rodeo Restaurant. I had the Chalupa plate…

033

Mary had the enchilada plate…

034

A couple of strolling musicians stopped by to sing a few songs for tips…

029

Then onto the only hand-pulled ferry left remaining on the Rio Grande River. I was here in 1997 when all there was the ferry at the end of a narrow road with a small Border Patrol Station. Here’s a photo I took in 1997…

img132

Because of 9/11, there is now a huge Border Patrol Station. Everything was shut down because of high fast-flowing water on the river so the ferry was not operating. We walked alongside the chain link fence to get down to the river. It has an interesting history and you can read about the ferry by clicking this link…

Thousand Trails Medina Lake RV Resort, Lakehills, Texas – Day 12

Mary remains at home in California tending to medical and personal business issues.

The motorhome is parked at Thousand Trails about 40 miles west of San Antonio.

Yesterday I drove the Bronco the about 60 miles round-trip into the outskirts of San Antonio for a grocery shopping trip to Costco and Wal-Mart. Since the motorhome is parked out in the country all there is a small local grocery store with the barest of provisions. I was last in San Antonio in 1979 and my memory of the place was the traffic congestion. It hasn’t gotten any better in the last 33 years.

Along the way I had to go right by another famous old Texas honkytonk. John T. Floore’s started out in the 1940’s as a country store and became a cafe and honkytonk. You can read about it by clicking this link…
http://www.liveatfloores.com/floores_history.html

While waiting for my tasty grilled chicken sandwich for lunch, I chatted with Darcy, the Day Manager. She told me that the place remains essentially the same since she started coming here more than 40 years ago. The only real change was that back then it was really out in the sticks. That’s no longer the case since now the San Antonio city limits are now less than five miles away.

All of the old-time Country and Western singers have performed here. Willie Nelson last was here on October 11th of this year with a $40 admission price. Speaking of Willie and since I’m in Willie country, I just finished reading a 900+ page hardcover book entitled…”Willie Nelson…A Epic Life”, published in 2008 and covering the first 75 years of his life. Willie will become 80 years old on April 29, 2013. When asked when he was going to retire, he replied…”All I do is play music and golf. Why would I want to stop doing that?”.

I ordered a bottle of Lone Star Beer with my lunch only to be told…no bottles. She explained that since there was a show that night, they only stock the coolers with cans. What does that tell you? Anyways, Here are the photos that I took.. Note the signs that say $100 fine for fighting…
